DISPLAY 'DEVICE Filed June 4, 1935 2 Sheets- Sheet 2 Affof/veys.
Patented Jan. 5, 1937 UNITED s'r 3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in display devices and has particular reference to a are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention, a portion thereof being broken away in order to illustrate the same,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the gear mechanism, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the guide track.
There are many localities where it is desirable to have the entire store front open during business hours, particularly during good weather, and it has been customary to employ removable panels or to use expandable grating to close these store fronts during non-business hours. Neither one of these arrangements presents a very pleasing effect and applicant has, therefore, devised a closure which, when elevated, will give the appearance of a permanent store front with show windows and an entrance door which may be used if desired.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the bottom of a rectangular structure having sides 6 and l and a top 8. Within this rectangular structure platforms 9 and H may be constructed, which together with glass panes form show windows A and B. Doors C may extend between the bottom 5 and the top 8. The structure thus formed is mounted in the: front of the building so as to occupy the space which would ordinarily be occupied by the entrance and the show windows. The structure, however, is suspended so as to move in tracks l2, there being four in number. These tracks engage guides l3 secured to the sides of the rectangular structure. Counter-weights M and it are secured to cables ll and I8 which pass over pulleys Ml carried in the top of counter-weight: guides 2!. These cables ll and B8 are attached to the sides 6 and 1, respectively.
Mounted upon the sides 6 and l are racks 22' and. 23 respectively which are engaged by gears 2 and 26, respectively, which gears are in turn actuated by a beveled gear arrangement best illustrated in Fig. 2 and as both ends are iden tical, but one will be described. The gear 2 3, for instance, is connected to a beveled gear 21, which in turn meshes with a gear 28 connected to a shaft 29. A worm gear 3! is mounted upon the shaft 29 and is rotated through the medium of a worm 32. By employing a crank handle 33 the worm 32 may be rotated, which in turn will rotate the shaft 29, gears 27, 28, 2t and 26, and depending upon the direction of rotation the rectangular structure will be moved upwardly or downwardly, and when in its lowered position the top will form a closure for the opening into which the device descends, and upon which pedestrians may walk.
It will thus be seen that when the device is in an elevated position, I have a conventional store front and when the device is depressed the same is entirely concealed from view.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a rectangular structure having a store front built therein and. comprising show windows and a centrally disposed entrance way, and counterweighted means for supporting said rectangular structure adjacent the front of a building, whereby said device may be elevated to form a closure for said building or depressed to give access to the entire front of said building.
2. In a device of the character described, a rectangular structure having a store front formed therein and including show windows and centrally disposed entrance doors, said device being positioned within the building line of a build-- ing, counter-weighted means for suspending said structure, said means including vertically disposed guides and meshing gears, and means for raising and lowering said structure in said guides.
described my invention, I
3. In a device of the character described, a rectangular structure having a store front formed therein and including show windows and centrally disposed entrance doors, said device being positioned within a recess positioned in line with the building front, means for suspending said structure, said means including vertically disposed guides and counter-weights, means for raising and lowering. said structure in said guides, said means including racks secured to the ends of said rectangular structure, and gears meshing with said racks and capable of being simultaneously actuated, said rectangular structure having a top section adapted to close the recess when in depressed position to provide a passage-way to said entrance doors.
HARRY MILES.
