My invention relates to defecators comprising a bowl proper and an evacuator integral therewith.
Preferred forms of my invention embody jet means for imparting a vortical movement to the contents, i. e. afterfill eiiiuent and contained matter, combined with jet means for eifecting an upward movement of the contents upwardly through the upiiow half-legv and thence into the downflow half-leg, i. e. evacuator, to be eventually discharged, as into a soil or other waste pipe.
Most preferred forms of my invention embody the principles of the defecator proper set forth and claimed in my copending application Ser.
#749,069, filed October 19, 1934, entitled VDefecators and the general principles of` my evacuator, i. e, downflow half-leg set forth in my copending application Ser. #4,620, filed Feb. 2, 1935, entitled Evacuators, In such preferred forms of my invention, the eventual discharge is through an outlet disposed laterally relative to the bowl.
Pursuant to my present invention, the downflow half-leg, i. e. evacuator, as well as the upflow half-leg are constructed integrally with the bowl proper and additionally such downiiow halfleg and such upiiow half-leg are arranged in major portion anteriorly of vthe ,rear face of the thus combined bowl proper and upflow and downflow Siphon-legs.

Referring to the drawings, the bowl proper I may be of any desired outer and inner contours and configurations suitable for carrying out the purposesof my invention. As illustrated, and as preferred, the bowl Vproper comprisesa 9 rear face portion ll, desirably uniplanar-and adapted to abut a vertically extending wall or equivalent of .a building or other structure, suitable provision being made for supporting the combined bowl structure in such position.
f Preferred forms of the bowl proper of my invention, and as shown in the drawings, comprise a main water channel I2 communicating with the rim channel I3 which extends in opposing directions at and aboutV the top Iii of the bowl proper, merging at the front I of the bowl proper in the downwardly extending channel It communicating with the main jet il, preferably directed toward the center Isa of the well I8 of the bowl proper and in substantial alignment with the upflow leg I9. The downwardly extending inner wall portion 2t of the bowl proper terminates preferably, see 2l, at a location anteriorly ofthe center Ia of the well I8, such center being desirably the lowermost point of the interior of the bowl. Thewall portion 22 defining the lower wall of the upflow leg I9 terminates at its top, see 23, ata suitable height to determine the normal level 4124 of the eliluent 25.
A suitable form of vortex-eiecting jet is had by the provision of a channel 26 communicating at its upper port with the main water channel I2 and leading to the jet opening 2l, located below the normal level 2t of the effluent and directed to impart a clockwise or counter-clockwise, as preferred, movement tof the eiiluent 25 and contained matter. f Rim openings 28 of suitable form and direction are provided in the lower face of the top i. e., rim portion III of the bowl proper, the eiective direction or directions of such rim opening 28 being in correspondence to the direction of vortical movement imparted by the vortex jet 21. As is indicated in the drawings, the direction of vortical movement imparted by the jet 2l and conjointly by the rim jets 23 is in counter-clockwise direction as viewed from the top of the bowl proper, indicated by the arrow 30 in Fig- 2.
The downiiow half-leg 3l is defined by the lower lface of the wall portion 22 and the inner face of 'the wall portion 32 `and communicates with or is integral with, as shown, the discharge passage 33, the port 34 of which communicates with the soil line, as per a Y-or other suitable iitting, or otherwise suitably discharged.
Such discharge port 3d is formed in the rear 45 face IIY of the combined bowl structure. Preferably in alignment with the dening wall of the discharge port 34 is the defining wall of the inflow port 35 leading to the main Water channel I2`,'the above enumerated essential parts being disposed anteriorly of therear face I I of the combined bowl structure, and also preferably inte.. grally with one another.
Embodiments of my invention may be molded of porcelain or other suitable vitreous material, or may be made of metal cast to the desired outer and inner contours and configurations and providing for the above stated essential channels and their ports and other parts,v and may be suitably coated with enamel or other finish, or equivalent, as is readily understood by those skilled in the art.
Suitable means are provided for the unitary support of the combined bowl structure. Such supporting means is preferably carried out independently of the connections at the inflow port 35 with the piping for the supply of water or other effluent to the main water channel I2 and also independently of the connection at the discharge port 34 of the discharge channel 33 for communication with the soil or other waste piping. As one form of such preferred means of support of embodiments of my invention, I illustrate in the drawings, see Fig. '3 in particular, the perforations 36 formed in the rear and vertically extending ledge 3'I, for receiving bolts or equivalent, for affording securement to and support, as by the studs of a partition or to the wallV material, or equivalent, thus effecting a suspension of the bowl and its above stated appurtenant parts independently of all piping connections leading to and from the eflicator.
Pursuant to the present invention, the upflow and downflow legs constituting the complete siphon, are structurally integrally incorporated in the completed bowl structure. To such end, the upper terminus 23 of the wall 22 disposed between and defining the upflow and downflow halfsiphon legs is of reduced horizontal dimension, see Fig. 1, comparable to an edge formation, and preferably flattened to extend in a substantially horizontal plane, as indicated in Fig. 6; also, the head, i. e., elbow section 4|] of the thus combined siphon formation is located anteriorly of the axis of the downflow leg 3 I, as compared with the evacuator set forth in my aforesaid application Serial #4,620. Also, the downow leg 3| is arranged anteriorly of the rear wall of thecompleted bowl structure, and with its axis to form an angle to the horizontaLand preferably lies substantially in the vertical, thereby, further, disposing the foot portion 42 of the downflow leg anteriorly of the rear wall of the combined bowl structure, and preferably having its axis of discharge disposed substantially at right angles to the plane of the rear wall II of the combined bowl structure;
The general characteristics of the upflow leg I9 are substantially as is set forth in my aforesaid application Serial #749,069. The general principles of the downilow leg 3I in my present invention, are substantially those set forth in my aforesaid application Serial No. 4,620, including inter alia as an essential, the embodiment of suitable means for positively precluding the inflow of air upwardly of the evacuator, i. e., in direction reversely of the direction of flow of the effluent, and accordingly preserving the vacuum within the evacuator during the stage of its discharge.
As illustrated in the drawings, such vacuum preserving means comprises a channel section, see 3Ia, having a cross-sectional area appreciably less than the cross-sectional area of the upflow leg I9 or the mean cross-sectional area thereof.
VSuch Vacuum preserving means, as shown further comprises eilluent-curtain-forming means, effected by the structure of the wall formation 4I preferably arcuately toward and to the vertical, relative to the axis of the downflow leg 3I, and engendering a curtain formation of and by effluent in its downward flow, such curtain formation being enhanced by the depressed horizontal wall formation of the foot-portion 42.
The depressed wall formation 42 functions as a pool for the collection of successive portions of the eilluent at a mean level at or substantially passing horizontally through the point indicated at 42a, thus effectually reducing the cross-sectional area of the channel at the location indicated by the section line 5 5, see Fig. l.
Cooperating with such curtain-forming wall formation 4I the wall formation 43 of the lower portion of the wall 22 is formed arcuately, whereby coupled with the reduced cross-sectional area of the channel section 3Ia above referred to, the eflluent is positively fashioned into a curtain formation and at substantially the beginning of the stage of siphonic discharge of the effluent through the eillcator, i. e., siphon passageway.
From the above, and as appears more fully from the disclosures of my aforesaid copending applications, Serial #749,069, filed October 19th, 1934, entitled Defecators, Serial #733,259, filed June 30th, 1934, entitled Lateral outlet defecator and Serial #4,620, filed February 2nd, 1935, entitled Evacuators, upon release of flow of the effluent from a flush tank or equivalent, or from a pressure piping as per a flush valve or equivalent, the eflluent enters the main water channel I2, thence into and through the rim channel I3 and into and through the vortex channel 26, the latter giving rise upon formation of the jet through the jet opening 21 to a vortical movement of the afterfill and' contained matter, Within the interior of the bowl proper, the former giving rise to the formation of the main jet through the jet opening I 'I, whereby the afterll and supplied effluent flow upwardly within and through the upflow leg I9, thence over the dam 23, thence into and downwardly of the downow leg 3|, relative retardation of the flow of the ellluent in the downilow leg 3| ensuing by the action of the relatively reduced cross-sectional channel section 3Ia, causing inter alia the rise of the eflluent at and above the dam 23 within and to a substantial extent of the head or elbow section 40, whereby upon continued supply of the effluent to and through the stated jet openings and consequent continued flow of the effluent into the evacuator 3|, the air 'of the elbow section 40-normally under atmospheric pressure-is entrained more and more by and with the eflluent, until the desired partial vacuum, i. e., subatmosphere pressure of the stated air retained elbow section 40 is attained, at
which stage the full siphonic action takes place. Concomitant with the effectual flow of the effluent to and through the reduced cross-sectional channel section 3Ia, a curtain is formed by the successive portions of the effluent, primarily by the wall formation 4I, enhanced by the arcuate wall formation 43 and' further by the depressed pool-forming wall section 42, such curtain effectually precluding the flow ofrair into and/or through the evacuator and preserving the subatmospheric, i. e. vacuum, pressure of the stated retained air within the head or elbow section of the evacuator.
Simultaneous and cooperative with the flow of effluent through the vortex jet 21, ellluent is supplied from the rim channel tions, serving primarily to scour Vthe upper vertical faces of the bowl proper, as will be understood.
I3 to and through the rim openings 28, in like vortical-effecting direc- 'Upon completion of the discharge of the matter-containing portion of the eluent, originally the afterfill, and cessation of the supply of additional effluent, the siphonic action is gradually brought to conclusion, namely by air entering the lower, i. e. entry opening of the upflow leg I9 and merging with the air within the head or elbow section 40, previously under subatmospheric pressure, and restoring the same to normal i. e., atmospheric pressure, the afterll of the effluent being afforded by the last stages of supply of the effluent through the vortex jet 21, the main jet I1, and through the rim openings 28.
Whereas I have illustrated my invention as incorporated in specific types of bowl constructions, it is understood that my invention is applicable to all suitable types of sanitary devices employing or adapted to employ the siphonic principle in the discharge of the same.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a sanitary device comprising a bowl proper provided with jet discharging means, channel means adapted for siphonic action upon the effective supply of efuent to and through said jet discharging means,
said channel means comprising a downwardly directed channel portion, said ch-annel means including a downflow` effective section of re-entrant formation including a cross-sectional area appreciably less than the mean cross-sectional area` of anterior sections of said channel means, said down flow section including a lowerly disposed horizontally extending foot portion and a thereto relatively upwardly disposed portion having an edge formation, effecting with such foot portion a vertical curtain of the eliluent, said bowl proper and said channel means being formed. of unitary integral material, the discharge opening of said channel means extending horizontally and disposed within the over-all horizontal dimensions of the upper face of the article.

As a new article of manufacture, a sanitary device comprising a bowl proper provided with `iet discharging means, channel means adapted for siphonic action upon the effective supply of efuent to and through said jet discharging means, said channel means comprising a downwardly directed channel portion, said channel means including a downflow effective section of' reentrant formation including a cross-sectional area appreciably less than the mean cross-sectional area of anterior sections of said channel means, said down flow section including a lowerly disposed horizontally extending foot portion and a thereto relatively upwardly disposed portion having an edge formation, effecting with such foot portion a vertical curtain of the eilluent, said channel means further including a discharging section directed in its axis along the horizontal, said bowl .proper and said channel means being formed of unitary integral material, the discharge opening of said channel means extending horizontally and disposed within the over-all horizontal dimensions of the upper face of the article. c

As -a new article of manufacture, a sanitary device comprising a bowl proper provided with i `jet discharging means, channel means adapted for siphonic action upon the effective supply of eiiluent to and through said jet discharging means, said channel means comprising a horizontally extending discharge section and further comprising a wall formation disposed anteriorly of said discharge section and providing for downward ow of the effluent, said discharge section including a lowerly disposed horizontally extending foot portion, said channel means further comprising an arcuate wall portion extending generally vertically downwardly and terminating in an edge formation disposed upwardly relative to said horizontally extending foot portion, said edge formation and said horizontally extending foot portion effecting the formation of a curtain by and of the efliuent therebetween, said bowl proper and said channel means being formed of unitary integral material, the discharge opening of said channel means extending horizontally and disposed within the over-all horizontal dimensions of the upper face of the article.

As a new article of manufacture, a sanitary device comprising a bowl proper provided with jet discharging means, channel means adapted for siphonic action upon the effective supply of eiiiuent to and through said jet discharging means, said channel means comprising a horizontally extending discharge section and further comprising a wall formation disposed anteriorly of said discharge section and providing for downward flow of the effluent, said discharge section including a lowerly disposed horizontally extending dished foot portion, said channel means further comprising an arcuate wall portion extending generally vertically downwardly and terminating in an edge formation disposed upwardly relative to said horizontally extending dished foot portion, said edge formation and said horizonltally extending dished foot portion effecting the formation of a curtain by and of the effluent, said channel means further comprising a downwardly directed channel portion, said channel means including a downflow effective section having a cross-sectional area appreci-ably less than the mean cross-sectional area of anterior sections of said channel means, said bowl proper and said channel means formed of unitary integral material, the discharge opening of said channel means extending horizontally and disposed within the over-all horizontal dimensions of the upper face of the article.
