Description
R. OURRIER. Carpet-Fastener.
No. 206,666. Patented Aug. 6,1878.
:LFEIERS. PNOTO-UTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD GURRIER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part. of Letters Patent No. 206,666, dated August 6, 1878; application filed January 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD CURRIER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Method of Securing Carpets to Floors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the aecompanyin g drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view representing the application of my invention to the threshold of a door. Fig. 2 is a transverse sect-ion across the threshold. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the removable portion of the threshold inverted.
My invention relates to fastening down carpets when it is done by means of pins fixed in the floor and not intended to be removed; and it consists in making a portion of the threshold removable, in order to apply the carpet to the floor-pins thereunder.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the floor, and B B the walls, of an apartment. This floor A is provided, near the wall or mop-board, with a series of sharp-pointed pins, a, arranged at short distances apart, over which the edges of the stretched carpet G are caught, the portion of each pin above the floor being of such length as to project some little distance above the upper surface of the carpet after its edge has been forced thereover down upon the floor. Over the projecting ends of these pins to are placed strips b of molding, each provided on its under side with a continuous longitudinal groove, 0, for the reception of the upper ends of the pins (1, which are thus covered and concealed from view.
As the molding b cannot be extended along the threshold D of a door, I make a portion, d, of the threshold removable, Figs. 1 and 3, and provide its under side with a series of transverse grooves, 0, corresponding to the number of the pins to be covered, the removable portion d and stationary portion h of the threshold being carefully matched, so as to accurately fit each other when the removable portion (1 is brought up in place, where it is secured by means of a couple of ordinary mortise-bolts, 6, located within its opposite ends or in the lower ends of the frame E of the door; or the-removable portion (1 may be secured by any other suitable device.
Instead of providing the under side of the removable portion (1 of the threshold with grooves c, it may be provided with apertures for the reception of the pins, in which case the, length of this removable portion would require to be just sufficient to fit between the sides of the door-frame.
\Vhat 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The removable portion d of the threshold, provided on its under side with grooves or apertures, in combination with the pins a thereunder projecting up from the floor, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
\Vitness my hand this 12th day of January, A. D. 1878.
RICHARD CURRIER.
In presence of- N. W. STEARNS, P. E. TESCHEMACHER.
