- Referring now more specifically to the drawing.' Fig. 1 illustrates a supply package in which certain features of the invention are embodied. For clearer disclosure, the webs of Fig. l are illustrated as separated from each other and bent. the illustration being of necessity somewhat diagrammatic. In the actual package the webs lie in .close superposition, as will be understood. The numerals I indicate the record webs, three record webs being shown. Each record web is an individual entity, being a distinct and separate web from the others. Each record web has alongitudinal series of similar printed forms 2 thereon, and between the successive printed forms are the transverse weakening lines 3 in each web and along which the webs may be torn. The transverse weakening lines 3 of the dierent webs i are in superposed registry with each other so in successive, longitudinally related sets. When the several webs are assembled in superposed relation to each other for the purpose of manifold inscription, the lengths of the webs between successive weakening lines 3 provide form-lengths which carry the respective printed forms, the printed forms of superposed form-lengths being also in registry with each other when the transverse weakening lines thereof are in registry. In this wise, by interposing transfer material, inscription on a form will be duplicated in the same relative position on the underlying forms. From the foregoing it will be seen that the lengths of record and transfer webs between successive weakened severance lines 3 form severable sets of record leaves or form-lengths with transfer leaves interposed therebetween in position for transfer of the inscriptions made upon the top or original record leaves to the underp lying copy or record leaves The record webs i 5d are each of such length as to provide a multiplicity of the printed forms, one after the other, in longitudinal succession. Although but six sets of form-lengths are illustrated, it is to be understood that the web lengths portion of a transfer 5 may be greatly ex- B5.V
tended to accommodate fifty or more formlengths. The lengths and widths of the webs are the same and, after superposition relative to each other with the transverse weakening lines in registry, the composite web thus produced is zig zag folded into a neat supply package, as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1. at I0. In this wise it will be perceived that when a forward set of superposed form-lengths is grasped and drawn from the supply package, the .next rearward set will be drawn therewith while the formlengths retain their relatively superposed relation to each other. The composite web composed of the superposed individual webs travels from the package to position for manifold inscription in the machine, being either drawn manually or by rotating the platen, and after inscription of the forward Aset of form lengths, drawing or moving the inscribed set of form lengths from inscrlbing position causes the rearward form lengths of the several webs to advance toward inscribing position, the successive form lengths of each web -being connected by reason of being an integral part of the' respective webs. Because the several webs herein referred to are adapted for movement or advance in a regular manner to inscribing position, and are of relatively great length so as to accommodate a large number of successive, printed forms, each web may aptly be termed a traveler-web.
Intermediate the record traveler-webs l are the transfer traveler-webs 4, there being three record webs and two transfer webs in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. l. It is to be understood, however, that a greater or lesser number may be employed. The transfer traveler-webs are preferably composed of usual carbon transfer material known as "cai-bon. It has been found in practice that eight or more record webs, with the necessary number of transfer webs, may be The record webs are attached together at successive intervals distributed over the lengths thereof, so that as the composite web is drawn or moved, the form-lengths of the respective superposed sets thereof will be restrained against longitudinal, linear displacement relative to each other. However, as later more fully pointed out, under certain circumstances limited relative longitudinal and transverse adjusting movements of one or more of the webs with reference to the others are provided for. This longitudinal restraint is effective as the webs travel in either of opposite directions, as for instance when the webs are advanced or retracted by a rotary platen of a typewriter. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 the three record webs l are attached by means transflxing the webs at the intervals referred to, the transfixing means, in each instance, being comprehensive of substantial web area. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the transflxlng means consists of stitching 5, which couples the record webs together. In the preferred embodiment the stitching consists of flexible wire thread, as for instance, flexible staples which extend over a substantial area of the face of the composite web, the legs of the staples passing clear through the depth of the composite web and being upset at their ends, so that they are securely retained in place. 'I'he stitching is disposed closely adjacent the transverse weakening lines 3 and near the side edge of the webs. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 the line of the stitching extends at an angle to the weakening dividing lines 3, and the stitching may occur at the opposite sides of each set of form-lengths, the stitching at the other side being indicated by numeral li. In usual practice the means attachlng together the form-lengths of any one set of superposed form-lengths is independent of the means attaching the form-lengths of any other set, so that the attaching means need offer no obstruction to dividing successive sets from each other along the transverse weakening lines 3. Furthermore, the transverse weakening lines 3 for the respective sets of form-lengths are at the same side of the respective intervals of attachment, and as they are' also closely adjacent said intervals of attachment, the major portion of the lengths of the form-lengths of each set are free and unattached to each other, and the formlengths of any one divided or separated set of record and transfer leaves may be readily manipulated and handled, being attached at one end only. In Fig. 1 the line of stitching 5 is at right angles to the printing succession of forms and parallel to the edge of the web. It will be clear also that sheets or sections longer than a single form-length may be torn along the weakening lines fromv the record supply package or composite manifolding assembly. For example, two or more form-lengths may be thus severed from the supply assembly and subsequently inscribed and severed into form-length sets.
Each form-length of each web may be provided with a supplemental weakening or tearing line 6, so disposed as to intersect the dividing weakening line 3 and the lateral edge of the form-length. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 the transfixing stitches 5 lie between the lines 3 and 6 and closely adjacent the supplemental lines 6, so that any leaf or sheet may be separated from its set, independently of the others, by tearing along the supplemental weakening lines 6. Both the transfer webs and the record webs may be provided with the' supplemental weakening lines 6 if desired, and these supplemental lines 6 are in superposed registry with each other in each set of form-lengths.
As above mentioned, the severance of a set of form-lengths from the continuous composite manifolding web assembly provides a set of attached sheets or form-lengths including record sheets and an interleaved transfer sheet. Each record sheet or leaf of this severed set is provided with one of the weakened severance lines 6 which are in superposed relation with each other in all of the record leaves, thus providing relatively superposed, detachable marginal leaf sections which receive the respective attaching device 5, 8 or I2. :he marginal edge of the transfer leaf lies between two of said superposed record leaf sections and as shown in Fig. l receives the attaching device 5. 'I'his marginal edge of the transfer leaf may also as shown be provided with a weakened severance line 6.
It will be understood that it is within the purview of the invention that the stitches may pass through the intermediate transfer webs at the successive intervals referred to, so as to attach the transfer webs to the record webs at the several intervals of transilxing. In some instances. however, it may be desired to have the transfer webs free of positive attachment to a record web. The numerals i indicate apertures in the longitudinal edges of the transfer webs. These apertures occur in longitudinal succession at points closely adjacent the transfixing stitches. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1, one leg of the staples of the stitches 5 passes through the transfer webs 4 closely adjacent the edge of the apertures 'I in the transfer web, so that when a set of form-lengths is parted from the web along the transverse weakening lines 3, the severed lengths of the transfer webs are also retained by the stitching.
In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 6, instead of attaching the record webs together by stitching, they are pasted together over substantial areas at successive intervals of attachment, the pasted areas being in relatively small adherent spots 8 adjacent the side edges of the webs, these pasted areas or spots being closely adjacent the transverse weakening lines 3. 'I'he pasted spots 8 are so disposed relative to the aperture 1 in the transfer webs 4 that the record webs are attached together through the apertures, the coupling or attaching of the record webs being coincident with the apertures. It will be understood, however, that the stitches may also -wholly pass through the apertures 1, if desired, as illustrated at ii,and i2 in Fig. 5, and at Hin Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 5, it will be noted that the staples il and i 2 are wholly within the margins of the apertures l, and that the staples i2 each extends in a line, not only at an angle to the transverse weakening lines 3, but substantially parallel to the supplemental weakening lines 6. By this'parallel arrangement a sort of stub is provided, which facilitates tearing along the weakening lines B.
As in all the embodiments illustrated, the at'- taching may be effected at opposite sides of the webs, in each set of form lengths. By such arrangement, the composite web is stiffened and reinforced close to the weakening lines 3 adjacent the opposite edges of the webs, and the webs are held from rotation in their own planes relative to each other. This arrangement, therefore, tends to maintain the weakening lines in registry` with each other throughout their lengths, and the webs are held rmly together at their edges and closely adjacent the weakening lines. Thus when the tearing operationbegins, the initial parting takes place at the transverse weakening lines and is restricted to the weakening lines on account of the reinforcing and stiiening effect of the attaching means closely'adjacent such lines. Once the tearing is started properly, as by the construction described, the tendency is to continue along the weakening lines until it is completed. Hence very little care in tearing has to be exercised.
It will be noted that whether the record webs be aiiixed together by stitching, or whether they be adhesively joined as by the spots of paste 8,
the edges of the apertures 1 in the intermediate transfer webs lie fore and aft, so to speak, of the attaching means, and in this Wise, when the record webs are advanced or retracted, the transfer webs will be advanced or retracted therewith. For purpose of clearer disclosure, the apertures l in the transfer webs are somewhat larger in size than that actually required in practice.
Following separation of one of the sets of leaves or form-lengths from the assembly along the transverse weakened severance lines 3, it will be noted that the severed leaves of the set will still remain attached together by virtue of the attaching means 5, 8, il, l2, etc., as fully described above. The detached set thus forms a unitary attached assembly of record and transfer leaves having free edges' opposite to the attachment. Thus additional entries may be made upon the several leaves of the detached set, or if desired the set may be detached before any inscriptions are made, the entries being subsequently made thereon either in a writing machine or by manual inscription. The severed attached record leaves and interposed transfer leaf or leaves constitute a free unitary manifolding transfer assembly having only the record and transfer leaves mentioned, and being free from connection with other parts. 'I'his free unitary manifolding transfer or record assembly is weil adapted for use in typewriting machines or for writing machines having cylindrical 'platens and for use in other types of writing machines and for manual inscription, because it is free from obstructions or excess thickness at the binding stub or elsewhere, and is thus flexible and pliable throughout its extent. Furthermore, the record and transfer leaves lie at all times in close transfer engagement with each other throughout the extent of the record areas whereby all the available record area of each leaf may be utilized and clear legible transfer inscriptions effected at all parts of such areas. For the purpose of transferring the inscriptions to each of the underlying or copy record leaves, one of the transfer leaves is interposed between the record leaves of each adjacent pair of said record leaves. This is shown in Figure 1 wherein a transfer leaf or strip 4 is interposed between the upper or original record strip or leaf I and the next adjacent underlying copy strip or leaf I; also as shown, a transfer leaf or strip 4 is similarly interposed between the lower pair of copy strips or leaves. 'I'he individual sheets of the detached set, either the record or transfer sheets, may be separately detached from the set by tearing them along the respective weakened severance lines 6.
Furthermore, the record and transfer sheets of the severed vset of form-lengths may be quickly and easily separated or stripped from each other at a single operation. The fastening means, such as staples 5, provides a binding stub for all of the sheets, while the apertures or notches 1 of the transfer web positioned diagonally opposite to the binding stub (or those at the other corners of the severed set) provide a selective grip formation whereby the record webs may be gripped together to the exclusion of the transfer webs. In other words, the edges of the record. and transfer sheets are relatively offset from each other to provide this selective grip formation. Thus the record sheets may be selectively gripped at the opening l while the set is held at the same time by grasping at the binding stub, whereupon exertion of a tearing pull will readily sever the record sheets from the stub along the respective severance lines 6. By this means, the record sheets or form-lengths may be quickly separated or stripped from both the binding stub and from interleaved relation with the transfer sheets. Therefore the formations at the binding stub, together with the formations at the remote apertures l may be referred to as stripping formations since they are utilized for effecting this selective separation of the record and transfer Sheets. The detachable strips or sections of the Y respective record sheets formed by the weakened line 6 will be retained in the stub. It will be clear also that the detachable strip or section of the transfer sheet will remain attached to the stub in cases where the transfer sheet is separately severed.
It will be noticed that each tear-off line 3 includes a straight segment or portion extending directly across the assembly, while the angularly disposed segment formed by each line 8 intersects or joins and terminates at the respective segment 3 and extends to the edge of the web. Thus, the weakening formed by the segment 8 extends entirely across the corner adjacent to the binding stub whereby the record sheets are readily detachable from the stub, or if desired the set of form-lengths could be torn from the complete assembly by severance along the line 3 to its juncture with the line 6, and thence along the line 6 to the edge of the assembly. If severance is made in the latter manner, the leaves of the severed set would be attached together at the diagonally opposite corners by means of the staples 5 and Il and the recordl and transfer sheets could be separated or stripped from each other by grasping them at the sections or areas at these corners, and pulling them apart.
In the complete supply assembly as shown, for example, in Fig. 1, it will be noted that the continuous traveler transfer web or webs are held captive between the continuous traveler record Webs by virtue of the attaching means 5, 8, Il, I2, etc., the notches or openings 'l of the transfer webs providing for zones or areas of direct face-to-face contact of the record webs, the fastening devices passing directly through these zones and through the openings.
As mentioned the fastening devices 5, lil, I2, etc. pass through apertures in some of the strips but pierce or transx other strips of the assembly. Also it will be noted that the fastening devices have connection with these strips by virtue of this transxing, and as shown in Figure 4 they have further vconnection with the strips by virtue of the yokes or connecting parts of the staples, and by virtue of the bent over or clinched ends of the staple legs, said yokes and clinched ends having contact connection with the upper and lower assembly strips. In this manner the fastenings are retained in Vstrip securing positions and are restrained against movement in the apertures out of their holding positions.
In the forms suggested in Figs. 5 and 6, the fastening means lie wholly within the respective openings 1, while the said openings are larger in area than the fastening means. The fastening means thus have positive connection with the record webs, and impositive or loose connection with the transfer webs. This structure, while functioning to hold the transfer webs captive, provides for slight relative longitudinal and transverse adjusting movements of these webs with reference to the record webs in such a manner as to compensate for bending movement of the assembly, such as folding, or unfolding, or passing around the cylindrical surface of awriting platen. In this manner stresses in the different webs are compensated in a large degree and buckling, bulging, warping, or similar distortions ofthe webs are very eectively avoided. Full, clear and legible transfer inscriptions are thus assured and damage to the webs is avoided.
The supply herein referred to is Well adapted for being fed by the rotatable cylindrical platen of a typewriting' machine. The forward end of the composite web may be introduced between the platen and the usual presser rollers, the rotation of the platen effecting either advance or retraction of the composite web, as may be deaired. When moving in either direction, the superposed webs will be restrained, by the'attaching means, from longitudinal linear displacement relative to each other, and the superposed forms will be held in registry with each other during their vicissitudes of manipulation in such machine. 'lhe attaching means, whether it be' pasting or stitching, comprehends a substantial area of the surface of the composite web, so that the webs are firmly restrained from rotation in their own plane relative to each other. When the attachment is effected at each of the opposite sides of the composite web,-there is additional assurance that the printed forms will be retained in registration with each other at all times. The surface pasting, as well as the transflxing means, provides a reinforcement and a handle. as it were, ready for the grasp of the operator without danger 'of disturbing the relative arrangement of the webs or the form-lengths, and avoiding the chance of tearing one of the form lengths at an unintended place. 'I'he transflxing wire thread may be quite fine in diameter, and also quite exible, and will not interfere with the travel of the supply around the platen. Under certain conditions the wire stitching may be replaced by cotton thread.
It will be observed that the composite web is provided with weakening lines at each of a number of points distributed in the length of the composite web, and that each web is provided with a weakening line at such point. Furthermorel it will be perceived that the supplemental weakening lines 6in the transfer webs are inclined, or at angles, not only to the straight weakening lines 3 in the record Webs, but also to weakening lines 3 in the transfer webs. In this wise, either web may be parted clear across on the lines 3, or either web may be parted or torn along lines 3, by beginning the tear on the side of the web remote from the lines E, and continuing the part along the diverging line 6, instead of to the end of the straight line 3, the result being that the divided sections of the web will have at one end an ear or tab formed of the material between the line E and the adjacent edge of the web. The lines 3 and 6 thus cooperate to form an ear-shaping weakening line on the web at each of the above mentioned points distributed over its length.
It is believed the ear-shaping weakening line is particularly desirable for effecting dividing or parting of the transfer traveler-webs, when a number of these transfer webs is interleaved with record traveler webs as hereinbefore mentioned. In commercial use it is desirable that the record form lengths divided from the webs shall have uniformly straight edges fore and aft, such as would follow by dividing the record webs along the full straight length of the transverse weakening lines 3. On the other hand, as the transfer form lengths or sections are eventually stripped from between the superposed record form lengths, the provision of the projecting ear on the transfer form lengths does not so detract from their sightliness for commercial use, and does provide'a tab or sort of handle projecting outside the adjacent ends of the superposed record form-lengths, which may readily be grasped without grasping the record formlengths.
Considering either set of superposed or composite form lengths produced by tearing the transfer webs. not straight across, but on the angular lines formed by the weakened lines 3 and 6, at the same time that the record webs are completely torn straight across on the lines 1, it will be seen that each transfer form length will have an ear at one end, as above mentioned, and
- these ears will be in superposed registry with each other, whereas at the other end each transfer form length will have a cut away portion, a recess or hiatus, as it were, the edges of these cut away portions being overlapped by therecord form sections, these recesses being in superposed registry, and permitting the record sections to be grasped as one, without simultaneously grasping the transfer form lengths. In this wise it is possible for all the transfer form lengths to be grasped as one at one end by taking hold of the superposed projecting ears thereof before mentioned, and for the record sections to be grasped as one through the cut away recesses at the other end, and the transfer sections stripped from the record sections at one operation, thus leaving the superposed record form lengths free of the interleaved transfer form lengths.
Or, if desired, the tearing may be effected on the weakened lines t in the record webs and completely across on the straight lines 3 of the transfer webs. It will be noted that in the modiileations illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the transfer webs are not positively attached by the stitching or pasting. Thus in these embodiments the stripping of the transfer sections from the record sections is greatly facilitated. But the stripping principle is applicable in each modication, as will be clear.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the weakening lines t are clearly illustrated in their relation to their respective webs. As specifically shown, the lines are inclined or diagonal to the lines 3, which latter are normal to the sides of the web, and in each point of division of the composite web, the ear producing weakening lines t are on the same side of the normal portion of the straight transverse weakening line.
Thus by the above described construction are accomplished, among others, the objects hereinbefore referred to.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A supply package adapted for manifold use including, in combination, a plurality of separate traveler-webs assembled in superposed relation to each other and of lengths adapted to provide a multiplicity of sets of relatively'superposed, registering, form-lengths, one set after the other in longitudinal succession, said webs having dividing weakening lines between the form-lengths, and supplemental weakening lines along lines intersecting said dividing lines and the lateral edges of the form-lengths, and web attaching means carried by and transxing the form-lengths of each said sets so as to restrain the form-lengths thereof against longitudinal linear displacement relative to each other as the webs travel in either of opposite directions, said attaching means of different sets being independent of each other and attaching the form-lengths together between said dividing and said supplemental lines.
2. A supply package adapted for manifold use including, in combination, a plurality of separate traveler-webs assembled in superposed relation to each other and of lengths adapted to provide a multiplicity of sets of relatively superposed, registering, form-lengths, one set after the other in longitudinal succession, said webs having dividing weakening lines between the form-lengths, and supplemental weakening lines along lines intersecting said dividing lines and the lateral edges of the form-lengths, and web attaching means .carried by and transflxing the formlengths of each said sets so as to restrain the form-lengths thereof against longitudinal lineardisplacement relative to each other as the webs travel in either of opposite directions, means of different sets being independent of each other and attaching the form-lengths together between said dividing and said supplemental lines, and including stitches close to said dividing lines, the line of which stitches extends at an angle to said dividing lines, each said set having said attaching ,means close to said dividing lines and near opposite sides of the set.
3. A supply for manifold use including. in combination, a pair of traveler-webs in superposed relation to each other, a third traveler-web intermediate the webs of said pair adapted to travel therewith, said intermediate web having a longitudinal succession of apertures, the webs of said pair, at intervals coincident with said apertures,
web intermediate the webs of said pair adapted to travel therewith, said transfer web having a longitudinal succession of apertures in its edge, and stitching passing through said apertures and connecting said record webs for traveling together.
6. superposed record sheets, and a transfer sheet therebetween, said transfer sheet having a marginal aperture, and fastening means, coincident with said aperture, securing the record sheets together.
7. A manifolding pile comprising a plurality of continuous worksheet webs each having a succession of form or web lengths separated by transverse lines of severance, a continuous carbon web interleaved between each two adjacent worksheet webs, staples located at intervals along the pile of superposed webs at each of the form lengths and positioned only in the vicinity of said transverse lines `of severance and securing all of the webs of the pile together in desired relation with the lines of severance of the several webs in registration, and means located at spaced intervals along the pile of webs for securing less than the total number of webs together in desired relation said means being located between the successive lines of severance and only in the vicinity of said transverse lines of severance so as to hold certain of the form-lengths together after the set of' form-lengths has been severed from the superposed webs.
8. A manifolding pile comprising a plurality of continuous worksheet webs each having a succession of form or web lengths separated by weakened lines of severance, a continuous carbon web interleaved between each two adjacent worksheet webs, staples arranged in a series and located at form-length intervals along the pile oi superposed webs at each of the forrnor web-lengths for se= curing all of the webs of the pile together in desired relation with the lines of severance of the several webs in registration, other staples arranged in a series and located at form-length intervals along the pile of webs for securing less than the total number of webs together in desired relation, said other staples being located between the successive lines of severance so as to hold certain of the form-lengths collated together subsequent to the severance of the set of form-lengths from the superposed strips, and weakening lines extending transversely of each of the form-v lengths and delineating a detachable area in which the respective staple of one series is positioned, whereby one form-length may be separated from the others of the worksheets constituting the group which is secured together by the last mentioned staple.
9. A supply for manifold use including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler-webs, a transfer traveler-web interposed therebetween, having apertures arranged at spaced intervals along the supply, and means extending through said apertures and attaching said record travelerwebs together independently of said transfer traveler-web, said attaching means being smaller than said apertures so as to provide for limited longitudinal movement of the transfer travelerweb relatively to the record traveler-webs.
10. A manifolding pile comprising a plurality of continuous worksheet strips and a continuous carbon strip interposed between two adjacent worksheet strips, the carbon strip being of substantially the same width as the worksheet strips and having cut-out portions at both lateral margins and located at intervals along the pile to provide zones of face-to-face direct contact of the adjacent worksheet strips with each other, and means located in said zones of direct contact for securing the worksheet strips together at both lateral margins, said means holding the worksheets in registration and holding the carbon strip captive'between the worksheet strips.
11. A supply for manifold use including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler-webs, and a transfer' traveler-web interposed therebetween, said record webs having a series of weakening lines dividing the same into a succession of superposed form-lengths each having a detachable section separated from the body of the formlength by a weakening line, marginal portions of transfer-web being offset from gripping relation relative to adjacent portions of record-web at a point relatively remote from said detachable section, in each multi-ply form-length.
12. A supply for manifold use including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler-webs, a transfer traveler-web interposed therebetween, said record webs having a series of weakening lines dividing the same into a succession of superposed form-lengths each having a detachable section separated from the body of the formlength by a weakening line, and means attaching together the superposed detachable sections in each form-length, marginal portions of transfer-web being offset from gripping relation relative to adjacent portions of record-web at a point relatively remote from said detachable section, in each multi-ply form-length.
13. A device including an original sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet therebetween, and means for detachably interconnecting said sheets including a fastening means for interconnecting the carbon sheet to the other sheets, and a second fastening means for interconnecting the original and copy sheets independently of the carbon sheet.
14. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, and a carbon sheet interposed therebetween, the combination of means for detachably interconnecting all the sheets, and other means remote therefrom for detachably interconnect-l ing the original and copy sheets alone.
15. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet therebetween. and means spaced from the carbon sheet and detachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets, supplemental means for detachably interconnecting the carbon sheet to the original and copy sheet independently of the first mentioned means.
16. A device including an original sheet, a copy sheet, a carbon sheet therebetween, said sheets being all detachably interconnected along one line and the original and copy sheets alone being detachably interconnected along a line spaced from the first line.
17. In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet and a carbon sheet therebetween, the combination of a means for detachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets independently of the carbon sheet, and a second means for detachably interconnecting the carbon sheet to certain of the other sheets, the second means including a section of said carbon sheet attached to said other sheets and separated from the body of the carbon sheet by a weakened line so as to provide for release of the carbon sheet upon severance along said weakened line.
18. A multi-ply manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record travelerwebs having form-lengths arranged in series therealong and a transfer traveler-web in superposed manifolding relation to each other and having, at each of a number o1' points distributed throughout the lengthof the record, means including a grip-escaping aperture in said transfer web, said webs having also, at each of a number of other points distributed throughout the length of the record, means attaching said record webs to said transfer web, said grip-escaping apertures being positioned at each of said formlengths so as to provide in each set of record and transfer form-lengths severed from the record, grip-escaping formations providing for selective grip of the severed record form-lengths without simultaneously gripping the transfer formlength.
19. A multi-ply manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record travelerwebs and a transfer traveler-web in superposed manifolding relation to each other and having, at each of a number of points distributed throughout the length of the record, means including a grip-escaping aperture in said transfer web, and having also, at each of a number of other points distributed throughout the length of the record, means attaching said record webs to said transfer web, said record webs and transfer webs having registered, transverse weakening lines at intervals for dividing the webs successively into sets of form-lengths, said grip-escaping apertures being positioned at each set of form-lengths and being cooperative to provide formations for selective grip of the severed .'ecord form-lengths without simultaneously gripping the transfer form-length, said form-lengths in the record webs having supplemental weakening lines intervening their points of attachment to the transfer webs and the body of the form-length having the selective grip formations.
20. A manifolding assemblage comprising a plurality of copy receiving sheets and a transfer sheet interposed therebetween, said transfer sheet having cut out portions, and said copy receiving sheets being secured together within the therethrough, and an adhesive material within the cut out portions of the transfer sheet for securing the 'copy receiving sheets together independently of the transfer sheet.
22. Superposed record strips and interposed carbon strips divided at intervals by registered weakening lines to form successive sets of recordv and transfer sheets, at least two of the record sheets each having a supplementary weakening line angularly disposed to the longitudinal strip edges and forming a marginal detachable portion, the sheets of a set being fastened together by securing means located within the boundaries of said detachable portion.

In a device having an original sheet, a copy sheet and a carbon sheet therebetween, the combination of a means for detachably interconnecting the original and copy sheets independently of the carbon sheet, and a second means for detachably interconnecting the carbon sheet to certain oi the other sheets, the second means including a detachable interconnecting portion so constructed as to release the carbon sheet on exerting a. pull thereon in the plane of the carbon sheet. y
24. Continuous record and transfer strips superimposed in manifolding relation, said strips being divided at regular intervals by transverse weakening lines to form a succession o! units each including record sheets and an interleaved transier sheet, the transfer sheet of each unit having an aperture in part bounded by a line of weakening, and fastening means for coupling the record sheets of each unit together, said means passing through the respective apertures.
25. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of separate, long, continuous traveler webs assembled in superposed relation to each other to provide a multiplicity of sets of relatively superposed registering formlengths, one set after the otherin longitudinal succession, said webs having transverse dividing, weakening lines arranged in a series and positioned between the form-lengths, supplemental weakening lines along lines intersecting said dividing lines and also intersecting the longitudinal edges of the form-lengths, and web-attaching devices positioned in each of said sets of form-lengths so as to restrain the webs against relative displacement, said attaching devices being located in each of said sets only closely adjacent to the respective dividing weakening lines, and between the latter and the adjacent intersecting supplemental weakening line, and said form-lengths of each said set being free from attachment with each other between said attaching device and the next serially positioned weakening dividing lines.
26. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of separate, long, continuous traveler webs assembled in superposed relation to each other to provide a multiplicity of sets of relatively superposed, registering formlengths, one set after the other in longitudinal succession, said webs having transverse dividing weakening lines arranged in a series and positioned between the form-lengths, supplemental weakening lines along lines intersecting said dividing lines and also intersecting the longitudidetachable sections, and web-attaching devices positioned in each of said sets of form-lengths so as to restrain the webs against relative displacement, said attaching devices being located in each of said sets only closely adjacent to the respective dividing weakening lines and respectively directly at said detachable web sections. said form-lengths of each said set being free from attachment with each other between said attaching device and the next serially positioned weakening dividing lines, and an additional attachlng device positioned in each of said sets of form-lengths and having attaching engagement with less than the total number of form-lengths.
27. A manifolding record including,. in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets oi longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply sections having form length sheets, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of' said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines and intersecting the respective form length sheet edges at spaced points thereof in the vicinity of said last mentioned weakening lines so as to provide detachable stub areas materially shorter than the form length sheets, and attaching devices positioned directly at and engaging said stub areas so as to connect the sheets oi a multi-ply section together after severance from the record along a set of weakening lines and providing for detachment oi said sheets from the severed multiply section along the 'respective supplemental weakening lines.
28. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets of longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply sections having form length sheets, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines, and joining and terminating at the latter and having their opposite ends intersecting the respective sheet edges in the vicinity of said last mentioned weakening lines, so as to provide detachable stub areas materially shorter than the form length sheets,
and attaching devices positioned directly at vand '-v engaging said stub areas so as to connect the sheets of a multi-ply section together after sev'` erance from the record along a set of weakening lines, and providing for detachment of said sheetsA from the severed multi-ply form-length along the respective supplemental weakening lines.
29. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets of longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply form-lengths, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines so as to mark out stub areas in each form-length materially shorter than the latter, and attaching devices positioned directly at and engaging said stub areas so as to connect the sheets of a multi-ply form-length together after severance from the record along a set of weakening lines and providing f detachment of said sheets from the severed lti-ply formlength along the respective supplemental weakening lines, marginal portions of the transfer formlength in each multi-ply form-length being cifset from gripping relation relative to the adjacent portions of the record form-lengths at a point relatively remote from said stub areas.
30. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets of longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply form-lengths, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines and joining and terminating at the latter so as to mark out stub areas in each form-length materially shorter than the latter, and attaching devices positioned directly at and engaging said stub areas so as to connect the sheets of a multi-ply form-length together after severance from the record along a set of weakening lines and providing for detachment of said sheets from the severed multi-ply formlength along the respective supplemental weakening lines, marginal portions of the transfer web in each multi-ply form-length being oifset from gripping relation relative to the adjacent portions of the record webs at a point relatively remote from said stub areas.
31. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets of longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply sections having form length sheets, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines and intersecting the respective form length sheet edges at spaced points thereof in the vicinity of said last mentioned weakening lines so as to provide detachable stub areas materially shorter than the form length sheets, attaching devices positioned directly at and engaging said stub arcas so as to connect the sheets of a multiply section together after severance from the record along a set of weakening lines and providing for detachment of said sheets from the severed multi-ply section along the respective supplemental weakening lines, and an attaching device for each multi-ply section attaching only a part of the webs together independently of the other webs.
32. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and one or more transfer traveler webs in superposed relation, said record and transfer webs having sets of longitudinally spaced transverse weakening lines along which the record may be parted into multi-ply form-lengths, each of a plurality of said webs having a longitudinal series of supplementary weakening lines extending transversely of the record and positioned in the vicinity of each of said sets of longitudinally spaced weakening lines so as to mark out stub areas in each form-length materially shorter than the latter, attaching devices positioned directly .at and engaging said stub areas so as to connect the sheets of a multi-ply form-length together after severance from the record along a set of weakening lines and providing for detachment of said sheets from the severed multi-ply form-length along the respective supplemental weakening lines, and an attaching device for each multi-ply form-length attaching the record webs together independently of the transfer webs, marginal portions of the transfer formlength in each multi-ply form-length being oifset from gripping relation relative to adjacent portions of the record form-lengths at a point relatively remote from said stub areas.
33. A manifolding record supply including, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed record traveler webs having a longitudinal series of transverse weakened lines dividing them into a succession of sets of superposed form-lengths. each said form-length having a detachable stub section separated from the body thereof by a weakening line, a' transfer sheet interposed in transfer relation between the record formlengths of each said set and each having an attaching stub section positioned between the detachable sections of the record form-lengths, attaching devices attaching together the said record and transfer stub sections of each said set of form-lengths, and an attaching device for each set of form-lengths attaching the record formlengths together independently of the transfer sheets.
34. A manifolding device of the type described comprising a plurality of continuous record strips having longitudinally spaced transverse lines of severance dividing them into a plurality of sheets, and supplemental lines of severance positioned to provide a removable portion for each of said sheets, means engaging said removable portions for securing said record strips in overlying parallel relation with the lines of severance of the several strips in registration with one another, and a continuous transfer strip interposed in transfer relation between adjacent record strips and being formed with openings therealong receiving the respective securing means, said openings being larger than the securing means so as to provide for relative longitudinal movement of the transfer strip.
35. A record supply including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs in superposed manifolding relation with each other, said record webs having a series of longitudinally spaced weakened transverse severance lines whereby the record supply may be severed successively into sets of superposed sheets, a transfer sheet interleaved in transfer relation with the record leaves of each set, and a series of securing means longitudinally spaced along the record supply and securing together the record and transfer sheets of each of said sets, said securing means being positioned respectively in each said set of sheets, and selective stripping formations in each said set of sheets positioned adjacent the respective securing means and also at a point spaced from the latter.
36. A record supply including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs in superposed manifolding relation with each other, said record webs having a series of longitudinally spaced weakened transverse severance lines whereby the record supply may be severed successively into sets of superposed sheets, a transfer sheet interleaved in transfer relation with the record leaves of each set, and securing means longitudinally positioned along the record supply and securing together the record and transfer sheets of each of said sets, said securing means being positioned in each said set of sheets, and selective stripping formations in each said of sheets positioned adjacent the securing means and also at a point spaced from the latter, said selective stripping formations including weakened severance lines positioned in certain of the sheets of each said set providing detachable sheet sections in which said securing means are respectively positioned, and said stripping formations including also relatively odset marginal portions of the record and transfer sheets at points of the sets remote from the respective securing means.
37. A record supply including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs in superposed manifolding relation with each other, a traveler transfer web interleaved in transfer relation with the record webs, said record and transfer webs having a series of4 longitudinally spaced weakened transverse severance lines dividing the record supply into sets of superposed sheets and providing for severance of said sets successively from the supply, securing devices spaced at intervals along the record supply and securing the webs together at each of said sets, and selective marginal formations positioned at spaced parts of each said set of sheets providing for selectively separating the transfer sheet of each severed pile from the record sheets thereof.
38. A manifolding assembly consisting of a plurality of record leaves in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, and one or more transfer leaves each of which is interposed between respective adjacent record leaves in transfer relation therewith, each of said record leaves having a weakened severance line, said severance lines being similarly positioned in the record leaves and having opposite ends thereof terminating at marginal edge portions of the respective leaves so as to provide relatively superposed, detachable marginal leaf sections in the record leaves, each said transfer leaf having a marginal edge portion interposed between said detachable leaf sections of the record leaves, attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance lines and also at said detachable leaf sections and at said marginal edge portion of each transfer leaf for attaching the record and transfer leaves together, and each said transfer leaf having at a point thereof remote from said attaching means a marginal part offset inwardly from the adjacent marginal part ofthe record leaves so as to provide a selective grip for the record leaves.
39. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, a transfer leaf interposed between the record leaves in transfer relation therewith, each of said record leaves having a weakened severance line, said severance lines being similarly positioned in the record leaves and having opposite ends thereof terminating at marginal edge portions of the respective leaves so as to provide relatively superposed, detachable marginal leaf sections in the record leaves, said transfer leaf having a marginal edge portion interposed between said detachable leaf sections of the record leaves, attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance lines and also at said detachable leaf sections and at said marginal edge of the transfer leaf for attaching the record and transfer leaves together, said transfer leaf having at a point thereof remote from said attaching means aI marginal part oifset inwardly from the adjacent marginal part of the record leaves so as to provide a selective grip for the record leaves, and attaching means spaced from said first mentioned attaching means attaching said record leaves together independently of said transfer lea 40. A record assembly including, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed webs each having a plurality of longitudinally spaced transverse severance lines dividing said assembly into record packs, fastening means extending through said webs and located at each of said packs, one of the intermediate webs being formed with a series of openings extending therealong, one of said openings extending into registry with each of said fastening means.
41. A record assembly-including, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed continuous manifolding webs having a plurality of weakened transverse severance lines dividing them into a series of packs of sheets, and fastening means for the sheets of each record pack in the vicinity of the respective severance lines and having positive connection with the outer webs and also having loose connections with one or more of the intermediate webs so as to provide for adjusting movements of the latter.
42. A record assembly including, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed continuous manifolding webs having a plurality of weakened transverse severance lines dividing them into a series of record packs of sheets, and a fastener for the sheets of each record pack in the vicinity of the respective severance lines and having positive connections with the outer webs and also having loose connections with one or more of the intermediate webs, so as to provide for adjusting movements of the latter, each of said loose connections including an opening in said intermediate web of greater area than the respective said fastener and receiving the latter.
43. A manifclding record including, in comblnation, a plurality of record traveler webs and a transfer traveler web in superposed inscriptiontransfer relation to each other, each of said record and transfer Webs having a longitudinal series of transverse weakened severance lines whereby the record may be parted into multi-plyform-lengths, each having record leaves with an interleaved transfer leaf, and attaching means positioned in each of said multi-ply form-lengths and attaching said record and transfer webs together, and said attaching means being positioned at points of the form-lengths spaced apart from the respective transverse severance lines so as to continue to attach the record and transfer leaves together in inscription-transfer relation in a multiply form-length which is severed from the record along said severance lines.
44. A manifolding record including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs and a transfer traveler web in superposed inscriptiontransfer relation to each other, each of said record and transfer webs having a longitudinal series of transverse weakened severance lines whereby the record may be parted into multi-ply form-lengths each having record leaves with an interleaved transfer leaf, devices spaced apart longitudinally of the record and positioned in each of said multiply form-lengths apart from but adjacent to said severance lines and engaging said record and transfer webs so as to attach them together and to continue to attach the record and transfer leaves together in transfer relation in a multi-ply formlength which is severed from the record along said severance lines, said webs being free from attachment with each other at longitudinal spaces thereof intermediate said attaching devices.
45. A traveler manifolding web having transverse weakened severance lines spaced at intervals therealong and each extending from edge to edge of the web, and a weakened severance line joining and terminating at each of said transverse severance lines and disposed at an angle to the latter and extending outwardly from the juncture therewith transversely ofthe web to the adjacent web edge so as to provide detachable web sections materially shorter than the distance between adjacent severance lines and being detachable from the web along said angularly disposed severance lines.
46. A traveler manifolding web having transverse weakened severance lines spaced at intervals therealong and providing means along which the web may be severed to detach web sections, said weakened lines including a line segment at each of said intervals joining and terminating at an adjacent line segment and positioned at an angle to the latter and outlining a web area longitudinally offset from the course of said adjacent line segment and being materially shorter than said spacing intervals.
47. A traveler manifolding web having transverse weakened severance lines spaced at intervals therealong and providing means along which the web may be severed to detach web sections, said weakened lines including a line segment at each of said intervals joining and terminating at an adjacent line segment and positioned at an angle to the latter. and extending continuously to the adjacent longitudinal web edge so as to outline a web area longitudinally offset from the course of said adjacent line segment and being materially shorter than said spacing intervals.
48. A manifolding assembly consisting of a plurality of record leaves in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, and one or more transfer leaves each of which is interposed between respective adjacent record leaves in transfer relation therewith, at least one of said leaves having a weakened severance line with its opposite ends extending substantially to marginal edge portions of the leaf so as to provide a marginal leaf section which is readily detachable, each of the other leaves of the assembly having marginal edge portions overlapping said detachable leaf section, attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance line and also positioned at said detachable leaf section and at said overlapping marginal edge portion of each of said other leaves for attaching said record leaves and transfer leaves together, and said record and transfer leaves having relatively offset edge portions at a point thereof remote from said attaching means so as to provide a selective grip formation.
49. A record assembly including, in combination, a plurality of relatively superposed continuous manifolding webs having a plurality of weakened transverse severance lines dividing them into a series of record packs of sheets, and a fastener for the sheets of each record pack,
having positive connections with the outer webs and with one or more of the intermediate webs, and having loose connections with the remaining intermediate webs, each of said loose connections including an opening in the respective intermediate web of greater area than the respective said fastener and receiving the latter.
50. A manifolding device of the type described including a continuous strip having transverse lines of severance spaced to provide for'detachment of sections of said strip in the form of sheets, weakened lines of severance having parts thereof extending transversely of said strip and having their ends positioned substantially at edge portions of the sheets so as to provide a removable portion for each of said sheets, means engaging said removable portions for securing a plurality of said strips in overlying, parallel relation with the lines of severance of the several strips in registration with each other, and a continuous transfer strip interposed between adjacent first mentioned strips, said transfer strip being formed with openings each receiving one of said securing means and being larger than the latter so as to provide for relative longitudinal movement of the transfer strip.
51. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record traveler webs, a transfer traveler web interposed therebetween, at least one of said webs having openings arranged at spaced intervals along the assembly, attaching devices extending through said openings and attaching the assembly webs together at each of said spaced intervals, said fastening devices being smaller than the respective openings receiving the same, said fastening devices having connection with certain of the webs for retaining said fastening devices against movement out of web attaching position.
52. A manifoldlng assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves including an original record leaf at the top of the assembly and one or more copy leaves in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, one or more transfer leaves each of which is interposed between respective adjacent record leaves in transfer relation therewith, one or more of said leaves each having a weakened severance line with its opposite ends extending substantially to marginal edge portions of the leaf so as to provide a marginal leaf section which is readily detachable, each of the other said leaves of the assembly having marginal edge portions overlapping said detachable leaf section or sections, a leaf binding including attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance line or lines and also positioned at said detachable leaf section or sections and at said overlapping marginal edge portion of each of said other leaves for attaching said record and transfer leaves together, said record leaves and interposed transfer leaf or leaves being the only manif olding leaves attached in said binding and in the assembly, said assembly as a whole being flexible and free from excess thickness throughout its extent adapting it for manifold transfer use in typewriting machines with cylindrical platens and similar uses, and said record and transfer leaves having relatively odset edge portions at a point thereof remote from said attaching means so as to provide a selective grip formation.
53. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves including an original record leaf at the top of the assembly and one or more copy leaves in relatively superin the several leaves and having opposite ends,
posed manifolding relation with each other, one or more transfer leaves each of which is interposed between respective adjacent record leaves in transfer relation therewith. each of said record and transfer leaves having a weakened severance line extending diagonally across one of the corner portions thereof,'said severance lines being similarly positioned in the several leaves and having opposite ends thereof terminating at marginal edge portions of the respective leaves so as to provide relatively superposed detachable marginal leaf sections in the record and transfer leaves. said detachable section of each transfer leaf being interposed between said detachable leaf sections of the record leaves. a leaf binding in-V cluding attaching means positioned outside'of said weakened severance lines and at said detachable leaf sections for attaching the record and transfer leaves together. said record leaves and interposed transfer leaf or leavesbeing the only manifolding leaves attached in said binding and in the assembly, said assembly as a whole being flexible and free from excess thickness throughout its extent, adapting it for manifold transfer use with typewriting machines with cylindrical platens and similar uses, and said record and transfer leaves having at a point thereof remote from said attaching means relatively offset marginal portions so as to provide a selective grip formation whereby certain of the leaves may be selectively gripped to the exclusion of the others.
54. A manifolding assembly including, in coinbination, a plurality of record traveler webs, a transfer traveler web interposed between said record webs, at least one of said webs having openings arranged at spaced intervals along the assembly. and attaching devices having attaching connection with the assembly and extending through said openings and being smaller than the latter and attaching said traveler webs together so as to provide for relative adjustments between the record and transfer webs, said record and transfer webs having transverse weakened severance lines and the severance lines, in the web or webs which have openings, respectively joining said openings.
55. A manifolding assembly including, in comhination, a plurality of record leaves including an original record leaf at the top of the assembly and one or more copy record leaves, all in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, one or more transfer leaves each of which is interposed between respective adjacent record leaves in transfer relation therewith, each of said record leaves having a weakened severance line extending diagonally across one of the corner l portions thereof, and being similarly positioned terminating substantially at marginal edge portions of the respective leaves so as to provide relatively superposed detachable marginal leaf sections in the recordleaves, a marginal portion of each transfer leaf being interposed between said detachable leaf sections of the record leaves, a leaf binding including attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance lines and engaging said detachable marginal leaf sections and said marginal portions of the record and transfer leaves for attaching the record and transfer leaves together, said record leaves and interposed transfer leaf or leaves being the only manifolding leaves attached in said binding and in the assembly, said assembly as a whole being flexible and free from excess thickness throughout its extent, adapting it for manifold transfer use with typewriting machines with cylindrical platens and similar uses, andsaid record and transfer leaves having at another corner of the assembll/relatively offset marginal portions to provide a selective grip formation whereby certain of the leaves may be selectively gripped to the exclusion of others.
56. A manifolding assembly including, in combination, a plurality of record leaves including an original record leaf and a plurality of copy record leaves in relatively superposed manifolding relation with each other, a plurality of transfer leaves each one of which is respectively interposed between two adjacent record leaves of the assembly in transfer relation therewith so as to transfer inscriptions to dierent copy record leaves, each of a plurality of said leaves having a weakened severance line with its opposite ends extending substantially to marginal leaf edge portions so as to provide a marginal leaf section which is readily detachable, other leaves of the assembly having marginal edge portions overlapping said detachable leaf sections, a leaf binding including attaching means positioned outside of said weakened severance lines and also positioned at said detachable leaf sections and at said overlapping marginal edge portions of said other leaves for attaching said record and transfer leaves together. said assembly as a whole being flexible and free from excess thickness throughout its extent adapting it for manifold transfer use in typewritlng machines with cylindrical platens and for other manifold uses, and said record and transfer leaves having relatively offset edge portions at a point thereof remote from said attaching means and from said severance lines so as to provide a selective grip formation.
