Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR SIDMORE, OF AURORA, INDIANA.
, IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESSES FOR GRAINING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,625., dated July 30, N78; application filed May 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR SIDMoRE, of Aurora, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in the Art of Graining, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in the art of graiuing; and it consists in producing designs upon wood or other hard substances by the use of plastic material, such as putty, by molding the material into forms and rolling it over or otherwise impressing it upon the surface to be decorated until the original design is destroyed, and repeating the process until the whole of the graiuing is finished.
By myinvention I produce a perfect substitute for the ordinary permanent grainingtools now in use, as the design or form of the tool is renewable or changeable at will.
In carrying my invention into operation, 1 take a piece of putty or other smooth plastic material capable of absorbing oil and exuding a small portion thereof on pressure being applied to the material, and impart to the same an irregular ribbed form, such as can be easily given by ones fingers. This form is adapted for rolling over the surface to be decorated, which surface has been previously treated with the desired ground-color and sour beer or other hygrometric wash, as is usual. Then, to produce a tool or device for forming the speckled appearance of a section of a woody boll or crotch, I convert the plastic material into a rounded knob or ball, and indent its thus-rounded end with the point of a skewer, lead-pencil, or other sharp instrument, and with such pitted lump I dab the surface in various parts.
Other forms may be given to the plastic material, as desired, and the material rolled,
dabbed, or applied to the surfacein other ways, according to the nature of the design to be given to the surface.
The advantage secured by my process is that the use of the tool formed of putty or similar plastic and smooth substance holding oil in intimate mixture therewith upon the face of the article to be decorated after it has been treated with its desired ground color and some suitable hygrometric wash, as is usual, is that such tool can be rolled over or applied to such surface without adhering thereto, and an oily scale will be left thereon by the tool, which will penetrate, and thus fix the distemper or pigment of the graining, and prevent it cracking or peeling off.
Any desired design may be imparted to the surface, as the pliable nature of the tool admits of it being formed into a variety of shapes. It is a cheap substitute for the ordil'lary tools, and can be easily formed so as to do duty for most of those now in use. Its use results in the production of work of a more enduring character than is obtained by the use of the tools ordinarily employed.
\Vhat- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process of producing designs upon wood or other surfaces by the use of plastic material, such as putty, by molding the material into forms and rolling it over or otherwise applying it to the surface to which the design is to be given, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
I11 testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
()StAlt SIDMORE.
