Description

1 1935- c. J. BALDWIN DISPENSING APPARATUS Filed Oct. 11, 1935 IN VEN TOR. Cz/rrra/v fluowm BY n M.
ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 15, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT FFHCE DISPENSING APPARATUS Ontario, Canada Application October 11, 1935, Serial No. 44,619
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a dispensing apparatus and more particularly for dispensing powdered or granulated soap, although it may be used for dispensing sugar or any other like commodity.
The object of the invention is to provide a container having a discharge member in association therewith, which discharge member is provided with a rotatably mounted body portion with a measuring opening therethrough normally re- 10 tained in filling position and manually movable to discharge position.
A further object is to provide a construction wherein the parts will be operative in such relation to each other as to eliminate the possibility 15 of wear to the moving parts when granulated abrasive soap is dispensed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, com- 20 bination and arrangement of co-operating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the present application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dispensing unit showing the preferred embodiment thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views taken on the line 4--5 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 showing the dispensing unit in filling position and Fig. 5 showing the dispensing unit in discharging position.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the discharge member, the operating handle, spring and nut being removed.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary elevation view of the inner face of the operating lever.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation view of the spring tension member.
Fig. 9 is a view of a cap-nut as preferably used.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
I is a container of any desired form and preferably of transparent material. This container is provided with a filling opening closed by the cap ll. i2 is the discharge member supported from a base l4 and supporting the container ID. The discharge member I2 is provided at its upper end with a funnel shaped portion l upon which the container I0 is co-operatively attached, so that soap in said container may gravitate through the funnel l5.
Below the funnel shaped portion I5, the container l2 enlarges to provide the transverse hollow body portion l6. Adjacent one end of this hollow body portion I6, I provide a wall I! carrying an inner sleeve 18. This construction provides an annular pocket between the sleeve l8 and 5 the outer wall l6 of the hollow body portion l6, which pocket is of a depth from the end (shown at the right in Fig. 3) and the wall ll. The wall ll is provided with a pin opening l9 and the outer wall I6 is provided with a stop shoulder 20. 10
2| is the body portion of the dispensing unit cylindrical in form and having an annular shoulder 22 at one end to abut against the face of the hollow body portion l6, When said unit is fitted into said body portion. 23 is the shaft extending through and snugly operating in the sleeve I8. This shaft is provided with a squared portion 24- and an outer cylindrical portion 25, the latter being threaded to receive the cap-nut 26. The body portion of the dispensing unit 2| is provided with a tangently formed opening 21 longitudinally therein. The coil spring 28 is housed in the pocket, hereinbefore mentioned, with one end thereof engaged in the pin opening IS. The other end of the spring 28 engages in the pin opening 29 on the inner face of the enlarged end of the operating handle 30. This enlarged end is provided with an opening 3i adapted to be fixedly engaged over the squared portion 24 of the shaft 23. The cap-nut 26 when threadedly engaged 30 over the portion 25 will retain the enlarged end of the handle 30 tightly in position, enclose the spring 28 in the pocket and at the same-time retain the dispensing unit 2i in tight contact position longitudinally in the hollow body portion of the discharge member I 2.
When the operating handle 30 is in the position as shown in Fig. 1, the dispensing unit 2l will be in the position as shown in Fig. 4, so that material in the container 10 and funnel l5 may gravitate to fill the opening 27, which opening 21 is of a predetermined size to act as a measuring means for a predetermined quantity of material to be dispensed. Upon the handle 30 being moved rearwardly as indicated by the arrow A in Fig. 1, the dispensing unit is turned in the direction of the arrow Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, closing oh? the intake of material from the funnel l5 and permitting the discharge of the material in the opening 21, through the chute 32. When the operating handle 30 is moved in the direction of the arrow A, shown in Fig. 1, the tension of the spring 28 is tightened and upon the operators hand or finger being removed from the handle 30, the handle returns to normal position as shown in Fig. 1 and the operating unit is returned to the position as shown in Fig. 4. The stop shoulder 20 in combination with the arcual recess 33 in the enlarged end of the handle 30 limits the movement of the handle 30 when normally pressed inwardly or tensionally moved outwardly.
The foregoing specification and annexed drawing discloses the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is to be understood that minor changes may be resorted to in the commercial adaptation of my invention without departing from the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. A dispensing apparatus including a material receiver, a hollow body at the lower end thereof, said hollow body being in part cylindrical open at one end and closed inwardly at the opposite end by a wall formed with an axial opening, the annular wall of the body being extended beyond the wall as a housing section, a sleeve integral with said wall and extending in line with the axial opening and spaced from said housing section, a dispensing unit mounted in said hollow body between said open end and said wall, said unit having an axial shaft rotatably supported in and extending beyond said sleeve, an operating handle secured on the extended end of said shaft, and a spring terminally fixed in said Wall and handle and housed in, the space between the housing and sleeve.
2. A construction as defined in claim 1, wherein the dispensing unit has a terminal extension to close the open end of the hollow body when the unit is in place.
3. A construction as defined in claim 1, wherein the handle and housing section are formed with cooperating means to limit the movement of the handle in both directions.
