SLEEPING ROBE Filed Dec. 14, 1935 0.5041 27 AND a s /omav 4 m 6. flab/64 Patented Dec. 15, 1936 SLEEPING ROBE Harry Cecil Bulpit and Spencer Sutherland Holden, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, assignors to Grant-Holden-Graham Limited, Ottawa, n-
tario, Canada Application December 14, 1935, Serial No. 54,461 In Canada October 10, 1935 Claims. (01. 5-343) This invention relates to sleeping robes or bags and has for an obje ct to provide a robe V, be varied to meet various weather conditions.
Another object is to provide an inner section for sleeping robes in which the down filling is prevented from shifting and is thus maintained in a uniformly distributed the section.
The invention comprises condition throughout broadly a robe consisting of an outer covering, a mattress section, a plurality of movable or adjustable cover sections, the outer covering being provided with an opening whereby the cover sections are accessible for adjustment, and closure means for the opening.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the robe in fully opened position;
Figure 2 is a partial perspective view of a modified form of the robe; Figures 3,4, and 5 are perspective sectional views of the robe in closed position showing various adjustment of the cover portion; and
forms with the mattress 2,
when folded into position for use, as shown in Figures 3, 4, and 5, a mattress portion 4, upon which the sleeper lies, and the other half,
with the cover sections 3, forms a cover portion 5 over the sleeper.
The envelope I consists of Waterproof duck or similar material and is preferably lined on one side with blanket cloth 6.
In the cover portion an opening 1 is formed in the envelope to provide access to the adjustable sections 3. As shown in Figure 1, this opening extends along the free longitudinal side and the lower end of the envelope portion of the cover section and is closed by separable fasteners 8.
As shown in Figure 2, the opening extends only along the free longitudinal side and is closed by means of a slide fastener 8.
The mattress section 2 from a material, such as is shown as formed cambric, sewn into a plurality of triangular-shaped tubes 2, into which down or similar material is placed. The
section 2 may be sewn in place within the envelope along the edges thereof.
The cover sections 3 may be formed from cambric sewn into tubes 3 and filled with down, and are individually of lighter weight than the mattress section 2. Sections 3 are movably secured in place within the cover portion of envelope I by means of tape fasteners 9, secured to the edges of the section, and corresponding tape fasteners I0 secured to the inner edges of the envelope.
A protective hood may be formed on the robe by means of a flap I I provided with a drawstring I2.
Snap fasteners I3 are placed on a tab I4 on the outer surface and adjacent the longitudinal edge of the cover portion of the envelope and on a tab i5 on the outer surface and adjacent the transverse or lower edge of the cover portion. The fasteners I3 are adapted to engage corresponding studs I6 placed on the longitudinal and lower edges of the mattress or under portion of the envelope I.
It will be noted that the tab I4 on the outer surface of the envelope permits a portion I! of the envelope to be overlapped when in folded position, thus making the robe windand draftproof. v
. In use, the robe is merely doubled upon itself to form the mattress and cover portions A and 5, and the longitudinal and bottom edges are fastened together by means of the fasteners I3 and complementary studs IE toform a bag in which the sleeper lies, the hood being adjusted over the head by means of the drawstring I2. It will be noted that the sleeper lies upon half of the blanket lining B, the other half forming the part of the covering adjacent the sleeper.
In general use in cold weather, the robe may be used in the form shown in Figure 3 with the mattress section 2 in the mattress portion of the robe and the two adjustable sections 3 in the cover portion which is the normal arrangement of the robe.
In warmer weather, the user may, by access to the interior of the robe through opening I, untie the tapes securing the adjustable sections 3 to the cover portion of envelope I and fold one of the sections 3 back upon the mattress section 2 of the mattress portion of the envelope, as shown in Figure 4. In this instance, the weight and thickness of the cover portion 5 has been materially lessened, while increasing the'thickness of the mattress portion.
In still warmer weather, the user may, in the same manner, fold the other adjustable section 3 back into the mattress portion, as shown in Figure 5, in which case only the blanket lining 6 and outer material of the envelope form the cover portion.
It will thus be noted that the sleeping robe according to the invention lends itself to several adjustments to meet varying weather conditions.
In Figure 6 is illustrated an inner section for a sleeping robe which is particularly well adapted for use as a removable or adjustable section inasmuch as the down therein will not shift within the tubes in which it is placed. As shown, this section comprises a plurality of separate longitudinal tubes 19 and a plurality of separate transverse tubes 20 interwoven together and preferably stitched at their meeting edges. Fastening tapes 2| may be secured to the edges of the section, as shown. The down-filled tubes constitute the warp and woof of a woven fabric to be used as a filler for the mattress or cover, or both portions of the robe. This construction may be used in the mattress portion as well, or as a mattress construction where use tends to shift the distribution of the down or other filling material.
We claim:
1. A sleeping robe comprising a unitary envelope which when folded longitudinally provides a mattress housing portion and a cover portion, a unitary mattress section secured within the mattress housing portion and a plurality of freely foldable sections hinged to one longitudinal edge of the mattress section, each of said foldable sections being arranged to be folded into either the mattress housing portion or the cover portion.
2. A sleeping robe comprising a unitary envelope which when folded longitudinally provides a mattress housing portion and a cover portion, a unitary mattress section secured within the mattress housing portion, a plurality of freely foldable sections hinged to one longitudinal edge of the mattress section, each of said foldable sections being arranged to be folded into either the mattress housing portion or the cover portion, said envelope having an opening adjacent the edge of the cover portion and closure means for said opening.
3. In a sleeping robe a unitary envelope one side of which is formed of a waterproof material and the other side of which is formed of blanket cloth, said envelope when folded longitudinally with the waterproof side exposed providing a mattress housing portion and a cover portion, means for securing the envelope in folded position, a unitary mattress section secured within the mattress housing portion, a plurality of freely foldable sections hinged to one longitudinal edge of the mattress section, each of said foldable sections being arranged to be folded into either the mattress housing portion or the cover portion, said envelope having a longitudinal opening adjacent the edge of the cover portion, and closure means for said opening.
4. A sleeping robe as defined in claim 3 wherein a protective hood is provided, said hood consisting of a strip of material projecting from the head end of the envelope and a drawstring in the end of said strip.
5. A sleeping robe as defined in claim 3 wherein said mattress section and said foldable sections are formed of a fabric comprising a plurality of down-filled tubes woven together in tightly fitting relation to form the warp and weft of the fabric, the tubes being stitched together at their meeting edges.
