Description

M. L. MCNULTY GUARD FOR WINDOW SILLS Filed March 22, 1935 Dec. 15, 1936.
RCN Y o E Lm EL 0 we l n Patented Dec. 15, 1936 2, bit
PATENT My invention relates to guards for window and other sills, and particularly for use with flower pots and the like, to preclude or at least minimize the danger to pedestrians of flower pots and the like dropping from the window sill.
In general, my invention comprises end members respectively adapted to be secured to the side members of a window frame and an intermediate member interconnecting the end members and accommodating varying spacial relationship between the side window frame members. Preferably, the end members are removably secured as by the use of bayonet slots in the end members and headed screws, lugs, etc., secured to the side frame members of the window.
For simplicity and low cost production, the end members may be of duplicate construction. Such arrangement has the further advantage that the resulting guard is constituted of symmetrically arranged component parts.
To preclude defeat by children and other 3 advised persons of the protection afforded by my invention, the length of the interconnecting member exceeds the effective length of one end member and the space between adjacent edges of theend members, to thereby prevent the intermediate member from being disconnected by sliding lengthwise of the end members. Accordingly, in the commercial sale of my invention, the interconnecting member is supplied of varied lengths to accommodate respective ranges of spacing between the side members of window frames.
Preferably, the interconnection between the intermediate member and the respective end memhers is of a nature to defeat disconnection by movement of the interconnecting member and/or either or both end members in direction transverse to the direction of length of the guard.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detail description and the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of one preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view taken on section line 22 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a view taken on section line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of Fig. 2, a portion being broken away to reveal otherwise hidden parts.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation showing another embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on line 6--6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a detail elevation showing a modification of the structure of Fig. 4 taken on line i'! of Fig. 4.
Referring to preferred embodiments of my invention, and particularly that illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, my guard, comprises end members IE, M, respectively including transverse extensions I2, l3, such extensions being respectively provided with suitable means for securement, preferably removable, of the end members relative to the side frame members of a Window. A desirable form of such interconnection, comprises, as shown, one or more bayonet slots l4 punched through the transverse extension, and headed screw or like retaining element E5 or equivalent secured to the side frame members of a window, see It, I'd. By arranging the larger slot portion of each bayonet slot l4 below its smaller slot portion, the weight of the guard offers security against accidental disconnection of the guard from the headed retaining elements l5.
The interconnecting member It may be of any suitable construction to be positioned and retained intermediate the end members Ni, ii, and preferably of like configuration to present a symmetrical assembly with the end members Ni, ii. Preferably, the interconnection of the intermediate member !8 with the end members I0, Ii affords slidable relation therewith. An inexpensive form of such interconnection is had by bending back the terminal portions l9, 2%, of the respective end members H], H, and providing a slot at the respective bends, such provision being carried out by first blanking the slots at the desired location and then bending the terminal portions l9, 2% in suitable relationship to the body portions of the end members it, H, and preferably to provide a friction fit with the respective portions of the intermediate member l8 inserted therethrough.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6 corresponds largely to that shown in Figs. 1 through 4 and like parts are designated by like reference characters. However, each end member if), M, is provided at its top or at its bottom'or both, as shown, with a bead 25 adapted to telescopically receive a corresponding bead or beads 22 of the intermediate member E8, the diametrical or other arcuate dimensioning of the respective beads 2!, 22 providing for frictional fit.
If desired, a set-screw 23 may be supplied for either or both of the end members IO, M, as is shown in Fig. 7 as an exemplification, with respect to the end member ll of Fig. 4, whereby upon installation of my guard on any given window sill, the interconnecting member [8 is locked against displacement.
Naturally for the purpose of guarding against the falling of a flower pot or like object, the lower edge of the guard is located at or in such close proximity to the window sill corresponding to the dimension of the object tobe guarded.
Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof it will be understood that many changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention,
I claim:
1. A window guard for flower pots and the like, comprising two L-shaped end members having, respectively, substantially rectangular, angularly related portions, one of said portions of respective end members being arranged for securement in vertical position to the vertical sides of and at the lower part of a window frame, the other portion of respective end members being adapted to normally lie in a vertical plane parallel to and within the general dimensions of the window frame, slotted guide means provided in the free ends of respective end members; and an intermediate member frictionally interconnected with the said respective slotted guide members of said end members and extending parallel to and substantially in the same vertical plane, said intermediate member having a vertical dimension substantially equal to the vertical dimension of said end members.
2. A window guard for flower pots and the like, comprising two L-shaped end members having, respectively, substantially rectangular, angularly related portions, one of said portions of respective end members being arranged for temporary securement to the lower vertical sides of a window frame, the other portion of said respective end members being adapted to normally lie parallel to and within the general dimensions of the window frame, the corresponding related portions of said respective end members being of like linear dimensions respectively; guide means provided in the free ends of respective end members comprising turned back slotted portions; and an intermediate member frictionally interconnected with said respective slotted portions of said end members and extending vertically in a plane parallel to the window frame, said intermediate member having a vertical dimension substantially equal to the vertical dimension of said end members and having a length exceeding the sum of the length of one end member and the spacing between adjacent turned back slotted portions of the positioned end members.
