UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT AN GLEMIRE, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,292, dated July 23, 1878; application filed May 22, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronnn'r ANGLEMIRE, of the city of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to that class known as seamless-back shoes.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved shoe with seamless back, to conform more nearly to the natural form of the human foot, and in which leather differing in quality, kind, or color may be employed to produce an ornamental and a better-fitting seamless-back shoe at a less cost than seamless-back shoes have heretofore been produced.
My invention consists, mainly, in producing that portion of the shoe known as the quarter of two pieces, cut in such a manner as to produce a quarter without back "seam, that, when properly joined, will possess the required spring necessary to a completefittin g quarter without crimpin To this end I have designed and constructed the shoe represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is the lower part of the quarter. Fig. 2 represents the lower and upper portion of the quarter as properly joined. In Fig. 3 is shown the complete shoe in elevation.
In the figures, A represents the lower section of a quarter with seamless back out in a single piece. Its upper edge is slotted vertically on each side of the rear center vertical line, forming a complete lower section, with an upward-projecting center gore. This section is then spread at its upper edge, opening the vertical slots on each side of the back center gore, forming two inverted open gores in the vertical slots, one on each side of the back center line. In this spread condition it overlaps the lower edge of the complete upper section, B, previously cut to the proper form, and
to which it is secured by stitching, as it is usual to connect such work. These sections A and 13 form the complete quarter, which, when lined, bound, and stitched in the usual manner, will be ready to be joined to the front 0 as it is common to join such parts, and when bottomed as customary in the manufacture of shoes will present the completed improved seamlessbaek shoe, as represented in elevation at Fig. 8.
By means of my improvement I am enabled to use the best leather in the lower portion of the quarter and to use lighter leather in the upper portion. This feature enables me to produce a really better shoe; and I am enabled to produce many varied contrasts from the employment of the different kinds and colors of leather now in the trade and employed in the manufacture of shoes.
I have shown my improved shoe with the major portion of the joining of the parts forming the quarter being in a straight horizontal line, and this I prefer; but it may be a curved line, as represented in the dotted curved lines seen in Figs. 1 and 3, or in any other suitable lines, without departiu g from the main features of my invention.
I claim as my invention- A quarter for seamless back shoes, composed of a lower and an upper section, each section cut from the same or different kinds of leather in a single piece, the lower section formed with a vertical slot in its upper edge on each side of the back vertical center line, and the upper section formed with a dependin g port-ion to underlie the vertical slots in the under section, substantially as and for the purpose hercinbefore set forth.
ROBERT ANGLEMIRE.
