It has also been found inpractice that during rapid operation of the device that the depressionof one of the actuatingv keys, will carry the adjoining key with it due to the frictional engagement ofthe friction washers, which separate' the keys. As shown-in Figs. 1 and 2 in the drawings the mechanism is enclosed in a suitable| casing I. l0 The casing is provided with a keyboard 2, in which lare mounted a plurality of selective keys 3, which may be provided with suitable indicia corresponding to indicia placed on the card adjacent the position to be punched. These cards l5 are fully described in patent to Perkins No. 1,544,172, so a description of them` is not deemed necessary here.
Each or the keys 3 is secured in some suitable manner to a key stem lever I. These levers are 20 mounted to rock upon a shaft 6, which extends from one end wall of the ca'slng I to the other end wall. The inner end of each key stem lever. 5, is in the same plane as a rocker arm 1, which' serves to reciprocate the punches 8.' As ^the 25 rocker arms I are duplicates we will describe the construction of a single one only. A slot 9, is provided adjacent the upper end of said rocker arm 5. A rocker arm shaft I0 through the slot 8 and all of therocker arms swing-on 30 said shaft when actuating the punches.

. the rocker arms in elevated position during the repeat operation ls clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and comprises a key stem lever 5, which is formed with an upwardly extending portion 2l the edge of which has two V shaped notches 2| and 22, cut or formed therein. A numberof spring pressed plungers 23 are provided to engage the notches 2| and 22, one for each key stem lever. These plungers 2 3, more clearly seen in Fig. 8, are carried by a bar 24 which extends from end to end of the casing and is suitably secured thereto in any convenient manner (not shown). The bar 24 may be conveniently formed as clearly seen in Fig. 8 of the drawings to carry the housing for springs 25 which actuate the plungers 23. Normally as shown'in Figs. 1 and 4 the plunger 23 is in notch 2|. Depressing key 3 Vwill swing the key stem lever 5 on shaft 6 and this will swing the notches 2| and 22 in an arc and vthe plunger 23 will move into mesh with notch 22. rIhe springs 25 vare of suillcient tensi'on so that regardless of the vibration of the parts the plunger.V will hold the weight of thel -rocker arm and its associated parts in their ele-I vated position for the repeat operation. We ex- .3| of the key stemlevers 5. -It will be seen from the foregoing 'that we have provided positive means forovercoming the objections developed in practice, which means will not interfere with the operation of the device.
Having described our invention what we resard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a plurality of rocker arms, va shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm,..punches actuated by the swinging of said rocker arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certain predetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms, means actuated by the movement of said keys to elevate said rocker arms, spring means which engage and hold said elevating means in position, positive means to prevent the depression of one key carrying With ,it 11 ad` aoearss jacent key. and means to perform a repeat operation.
2. In a device of the 'character described, a plurality of rocker arms, a shaftjon which they aremounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm. punchesactuatedby the swinging of said arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certain predetermined punches Y Y -to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms'l a key stem lever operated by the depressing of aV key to elevate a rocker arm into position to actuate its punch, means to perform a repeat operation, positive means to' prevent the depression of one key carrying withit an adjacent key, and means which engage said key stem levers to hold certain of said keys in a depressed position.
3. In a device of the character described, a plurality of rocker arms, a shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm, punches actuated by the swinging of'vsaid rocker arms, a plurality of selective levers to designate certain predetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms', means actuated'by Ytime movement of said keys to elevate said rocker arms, spring pressed means which engage and hold said elevating means inl position, means to perform a repeat operation, and a bar in which said spring pressed means are mounted, a portion of said bar providing guides for said elevating mechanism.
4. In a. device of the character described, a plurality of rocker arms, a shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm, punches actuated by the swinging of said arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certain predetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms, a key stern lever operated by the depressing of a key to elevate a rocker arm into position to actuate its punch, a guide for said key stem levers, means to perform a repeat operation, means which engage said key stem levers to hold certain of said keys in a depressed position, and a second guide located in the forward part of said casing.
5. In a device of the character described, a plurality of rockerarms, a shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm, punches `actuated by the swinging of said arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certain predetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms, a key stem lever operated by the depressing of a key to elevate a rocker arm into position to actuate its punch, means to perform a repeat operation, there being notches on said key stem levers, an angle bar which extends across the key stem levers, a housing secured to said bar a plurality of coil springs insaid housing one for each key stem lever, plungers actuated by said- 'coil springs which engage said notches to hold the depressed keys in that position.
6. In a-device of the character described, a
plurality of rocker arms, a shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotaland vertical Inove-` 'ment of each rocker arm, punches actuated by the swinging of said rocker arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certain predetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms, a plurality of keystem levers actuated by said keys, a bar which extends across said key stem levers, and spring pressed means mounted in said bar, a portion of said bar providing guides for said elevating mechanism.
7. In a device of the character described, a plurality of rocker arms. a shaft on which they are mounted to permit pivotal and vertical movement of each rocker arm. punches actuated'by the swinging of said rocker arms, a plurality of selective keys to designate certainpredetermined punches to be actuated by certain of said rocker arms,'a plurality of spring'pre'ssed plungexs, a plurality of key steml levers adapted when in a 'certain position to be engaged by said plungers, spring pressed plungers mounted in said bar, a
portion oi' said bar providing guides for saldeievating mechanism, and a second guide located in the forward part of said casing.
