Filed March 29, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor lnnlnfnlI/llnllllllnlrrlliflllliiv Attomey Patented Nov. 17, 1936 UNHTED STATES OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in ilag staffs, and more particularly to a staff having a portion thereof hollow for concealing and protecting the flag when its use is not desired.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a flag holder which can be utilized for displaying the flag which can be rolled up inside of the holder to protect it against Weather conditions.
During the course of the following specification other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the container portion of the holder.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the holder.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the internal tube.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the external tube.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Figure l.
Figure 6 is a cross sectional View taken substantially on line -li of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents a cylindrical structure having an enlarged circumferentially extending intermediate portion 6. Numeral l represents the peak or top knob of the staff having a shank portion 8. A connecting tube 9 receives the shank 8 and engages over the upper portion of the cylindrical block 5. The lower portion of the cylindrical block 5 engages into the internal tube ill at its upper end and suitable securing means il is provided at this point for definitely and positively securing the inner tube I0 to the section 5. A block l2 is provided in the lower portion of this tube I0 for receiving the shaft like extension I3 of the roller I4 which, at its upper end, is provided with a spring ratchet detent (similar to those found on shade rollers) which has the pin i6 thereof engaged into the lower end of the section 5; the block l2 is keyed to the tube l0 as at I2a. Suitable retaining members Il are provided on the roller I4 for holding the inner end of the flag I8.
The tube I ll is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slot i9 which is registrable with the elongated slot 2E) in the external 5 tube 2i which tube 2| circumscribes the tube I0 and abuts the shoulder 22 on the tube I0 at its lower end. The tube l0 engages into one end of the sleeve Illa, the sleeve abutting the shoulder 22 at one end as shown in Figure 2, while the 10 other end of the sleeve is engaged over the upper end of the staff.
It Will be observed that the edge portions of the tubes I-Zl and the slots l9-20 are cut away at points indicated by the numeral 24 to 15 permit the nger of a persons hand to be inserted to grasp the ilag so that it can be unwound. Obviously, when the flag is retracted into the tube lll, the other tube can be rotated so as to close 01T the slot i9 and thus entirely 20 engage and protect the iiag.
While the foregoing specication sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without de- 25 parting from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:-
A ilag holder comprising an inner tube, an outer tube concentric to and rotatable with respect to said inner tube, said tubes being provided with registering slots therein, a block in the lower portion of the inner tube, a body at the upper edges of the tube having a portion extending into the upper end of the inner tube,
a roller having its ends engaged with the said body and the block and having a flag mounted thereon for movement through said slots when in registry, a circumferentially extending shoulder on the outside of the inn-er tube with which the lower edge of the outer tube abuts, the lower end portion of the inner tube depending below the lower end of the outer tube, a tubular section into which the lower end of the inner tube extends and a flag staff extending at its upper end into the said tubular section.
