Application April 3, 1934, Serial No. 718,880 Renewed May 11, 1936 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in listers for use particularly in sowing Wheat and other cereals in semi-arid areas.
An important object of the invention is to provide a five row machine for sowing wheat and other cereals but the construction and arrangement is such that fewer lister units may be used if desired, said units being adjustably mounted on the frame to permit the space between the rows to be varied as desired.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a lister of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in operation, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:--
Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a lister constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation thereof with the covering disks and pressing wheels omitted.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view, taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
Figure 7 is a detail view in front elevation, showing the lower end portion of one of the drop tubes.
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view through the lower end portion of one of the drop tubes.
Figure 9 is a bottom plan view of one of the drop tubes.
Figure 10 is a plan view of one of the arms which support the covering disks and pressing wheels.
Figure 11 is a detail view in side elevation of the elements shown in Figure 10.
Figure 12 is a detail view in elevation of one of the covering disks.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a main frame which is designated generally by the reference numeral I, said frame being mounted for adjustment on supporting Wheels 2 through the medium of crank axles 3. Hand levers 4 are provided for raising and lowering the frame I.
The frame I includes spaced, parallel front and rear bars 5, said rear bar having formed therein spaced groups or series of openings 6 (see Figure 2) to permit the lister units which are designated generally by the reference numeral I to be adjustably and removably mounted thereon. Each unit I includes a base structure 8 adjustably bolted to the rear bar of the frame I and resting on the front bar 5 and upon which a hopper 9 is mounted. Depending from the base or attaching structure 8 is a beam Ill which carries a plow II. Depending from the hopper 9 is a drop tube I2 having its lower end adjacent the rear of the plow II, as usual. As best seen in Figures 7 to 9, inclusive, of the drawings, the lower end portion of the drop tube I2 is enlarged and has formed therein a substantially conical spreader I3 which extends rearwardly from the front wall of said tube.
The planting or depositing mechanism on the bottom of each hopper 9, which is actuated by a transverse shaft I4 journaled on the main frame I, includes a specially constructed plate for sowing Wheat. Arms I5 are journaled on the rotary shaft I4 and carry spurred drive wheels I6 which actuate said shaft I4 through the medium of chain and sprocket connections II. Guards I8 are provided for the sprocket chains.
Brackets I9 are secured on intermediate portions of the plow beams I0, said brackets carrying the lower sections of the drop tubes I2. Also mounted on each bracket I9 and extending rearwardly therefrom is an arm 20 having a cross head M on an intermediate portion which terminates in eyes 22 in which the covering disks 23 are adjustably secured by set screws 24. The arm 20 terminates in an inclined rear end portion 25 on opposite sides of which pressing wheels 26 are mounted.
It is believed that the operation of the machine will be readily apparent. As the lister moves over the ground the wheels I6 drive the feed depositing mechanism beneath each of the hoppers I. Plows I I open furrows in which the wheat or other seed is deposited. The disks 23 then cover the seed and the dirt is pressed by the pairs of wheels 26 passing thereover.
It is believed that the many advantages of a lister constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A lister comprising a wheeled frame including a pair of spaced, parallel front and rear bars, said rear bar having spaced openings therein, lister units adjustably mounted on the frame, each unit comprising a base adjustably secured to the rear bar through the openings therein and resting on the front bar, a hopper mounted on the base, a depositing tube depending from said hopper, a plow depending from the base forwardly of the depositing tube, and means for actuating the lister units.
2. A lister comprising a wheel supported frame, means for adjusting the frame vertically, said frame including a pair of spaced, parallel bars, lister units detachably and adjustably mounted on the frame, each lister unit comprising a base adjustably secured on one of the bars and resting on the other of said bars, a beam depending from said base, a plow on the lower end of said beam, a bracket mounted on the beam and extending rearwardly therefrom, a hopper mounted on the base, a depositing tube depending from the hopper rearwardly of the beam and including a lower section mounted on the bracket, a rearwardly extending arm mounted on said bracket, said arm comprising an inclined rear end portion, a crosshead on an intermediate portion of the arm, vertical eyes on the ends of said crosshead, covering disks mounted for vertical adjustment in said eyes, pressing wheels journaled on opposite sides of the rear end of the arm, and means for actuating the lister units.
