The invention relates to a lock and more especially to an adjustable tumbler lock.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the turning barrel and the casing of the lock have fitted therein tumblers, these being of novel construction and arrangement and operated through actuator bars controlled by a special key, so that it is required, before the lock can be actuated, that the key be set in conformity with the combination of the lock, this latter being changeable at the option of the user of the lock, thereby making it impossible for one other than the rightful user to actuate the lock for the unlocking of the same.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character, wherein the barrel is fitted within the casing in a novel manner so that it can be conveniently removed for the changing of the combination of the look at the option of the user thereof, the barrel being constructed to accommodate actuator bars which control the tumblers of the lock for the manipulation thereof through the use of a special key, the lock being safe and in its construction being novel in entirety.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lock of this character which is comparatively simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, il-' lustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the lock comprises a cylindrical casing I0 open at opposite ends and at one end there is formed an internal annular flange I I for the interfitting with thecasing of a rotatable head I2, the latter having an extension I3 for connection with a bolt or other loclnng medium on the turning of said head. It is required, for the interfitting of the head I2 with the casing II], that the latter be longitudinally split and thereafter when the head has been interfitted the split sections of the casing are welded or otherwise united permanently.
Insertable through the opposite open end of the casing I0 is a turning barrel I4, having a flat face coupling extension I5 for reception in a correspondingly shaped opening I6 in the head I2 so that when the barrel is turned or rotated the said head I2 will turn or rotate therewith. 20 The front or outer end of the barrel I4 has a disklike head I7 which is of a. diameter corresponding approximately to the diameter of the casing I0 so asfto overlie the said casing at the outer open end thereof. 25
The barrel I4 has provided centrally therein a keyway or slot I8 for accommodating a key I9, this being of a permutation type having displaceable bits 20 operated from a trigger 2| which projects the said bits to operative position according to the combination or set permutation of the lock proper for the actuation thereof or the turning of its barrel I 4.
The barrelv I4'has fitted therewith a removable section 22 and this section carries 2. lug 23 which matches an'annular groove or channel 24 in the inner surface or the casing I0, so that when the lug 23 is engagedin the groove or channel 24 the barrel is free for rotation or turning in the said casingand the said barrel cannot be withdrawn 40 or taken out of the casing.
To permit the removal of the barrel I 4, the inner surface of the casing, at a selected point, has formedtherein a longitudinally extending channelor groove 25 which extends through the outer or forward open end of said casing, and the lug 23 can be brought to a position to register with this channel or groove 25 and in so doing the barrel I4 can be withdrawn or taken out of the casing. The
purpose of taking out the barrel I4 from the casing I0 is to change the combination or permutation of the look at the option of the user. Interfitted with the casing I0 and the barrel I4 are rotatable tumblers, these being arranged in pairs at diametrically opposite sides of the barrel l4, and the tumblers of each pair are spaced from each other and are positioned at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said barrel. Each tumbler is formed of two sections 26 and 21, respectively, their separation from each ether being in conformity with the circular separation of the casing l and barrel [4. The section 21 is pro vided with a dovetailed rib 28 (Fig. 31) fitting a dovetailed groove 29in the casing It], 'so that the section 21 is rotatably interfitted with the casing ID to prevent this section 21 from dropping out of the casing when the barrel I4 is removed from the latter. The section 26 is provided with a wing or extension 30 which is adapted to be projected into the path of a permutation or combination lug 3| on the associated one of a group of actuator bars 32, these being slidably fitted in the keyway or slot [8. The bars 32 carry guide pins 33 about which are arranged coiled expansion springs 34 (Fig. 2) fitted within seats 35 in the barrel l4, and these springs urge the actuator bars in a forward or outward direction within the way or slot IB to be operated upon by the key I9 when the latter is engaged or inserted in the way or slot l8 for the operation of the lock. The section 22 removable from the barrel l4 when the latter is extracted or taken out of the casing l0 permits access to be had to the bars 32, so that they can be rearranged for the alteration or changing of the combination or permutation of the look at the will of the user of the latter.
Mounted in the barrel 14 between the tumblers or the sections 26 and 21 thereof are coiled springs 36, these being attached to the sections 26 and operating to project the extensions 30 thereof into the path of the lugs 3| of the actuator bars 32, so that the tumblers can be turned under movement of the said bars 32 to free the barrel I4, whereby it may be turned or rotated within the casing [6 for the actuation of the lock, the actuator bars 32 being controlled and operated by the key l9.
Normally the fore tumblers of the pairs as contained within the casing and barrel l0 and I4 of the lock have their sections 26 and 21 positioned so as to lie crosswise to the outer surface of the barrel l4 and thus lock the barrel against turning or rotating within the casing l0, while the other tumblers of the pairs, comprising those inwardly spaced from the ones before mentioned, are positioned so that the split or separation between the sections 26 and 21 will align with the separation between the casing l0 and barrel 14. These latter tumblers being thus disposed out of locking position, are moved to locking position by their associated actuator bars 32 should be erroneous key be inserted in the slot or way I8, thereby avoiding any possibility of fraudulent manipulation of the look by the turning of the barrel l4 thereof should it happen that the key as employed under fraudulent manipulation permits the fore tumblers to turn to freeing position for the barrel l4.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, the tumblers including the sections 26 and 21 are normally disposed as shown, and thus the barrel I4 is held against turning or rotation within the casing I. Now, when the key I9 is set in conformity with the combination of the lock and inserted in the way or slot l8, the bits 20 of the key will displace those actuator bars 32 associated with the fore tumblers, permitting the fore tumblers to turn under the action of the springs 36 to freeing position for the barrel l4, while the aft tumblers will remain inactive by reason of the fact that the wings 36 of the sections 26 and 27 of such tumblers will not be acted upon by the lugs 3| of the actuator bars 32, associated therewith. All the tumblers being thus freed the barrel M can be turned or rotated by the key I!) for actuating the lock.
Should an improper key be inserted in the barrel 14 through the slot I8, all of the actuator bars 32 which should be displaced rearwardly and all of those actuator bars which should not be moved, in order to set all of the tumblers 26, 21 in position to free the barrel I4, will not be displaced or be unafiected, respectively, and any actuator bar associated with a fore tumbler which is not moved, or any one associated with a rear tumbler which is moved will either leave a fore tumbler in looking position or move a rear tumbler to locking position to prevent turning of the barrel l4 within the casing ID.
The actuator bars 32 normally are in the position as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and thus the barrel I4 is held against turning or rotating within the casing I0, such movement of the barrel being had only by using the key [9 with its bits 20 set in conformity with the requirements of the combination of the lock, whereupon the tumblers, including the sections 26 and 21, will be affected by the actuator bars 32 for the freeing of the barrel M for its rotation or turning within the casing I0. Such movement of the barrel l4, through the agency of the extension l thereof, will rotate the head l2 and its extension l3 to move the usual bolt or other locking medium (not shown). In addition, movement of all of the tumblers 26, 21 to their freed position will permit the turning of the barrel I4 within the casing to bring the lug 23 into register with the longitudinal groove 25, whereupon the barrel may be withdrawn forwardly from the casing. The section 22 of the barrel [4 may then be removed to permit the actuator bars 32 to be selectively rearranged to change the permutation action thereof as desired. With this arrangement, the bits 20 of the key I9 may be readjusted, as disclosed in Letters Patent No. 2,019,399, issued to me on October '29, 1935, to properly co-operate with the new com bination set in the look.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
What is claimed is:
1. A lock of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing, rotatable tumblers fitted with the barrel and casing for pinning said barrel against rotation within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, and springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing.
2. A look of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with said head, rotatable tumblers fitted with the barrel and casing for holding the latter within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release and hold the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyWay in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same within the casing and means for releasing the barrel from said casing.
3. A look of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with said head, rotatable tumblers operating within the barrel and casing for holding said barrel against rotation within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same within the casing, means for releasing the barrel from said casing, and springs active against the actuator bars to hold the same in a normal position for latching the barrel against movement within the casing.
4. A look of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with said head, tumblers for rotatably operating Within the barrel and casing at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the said barrel for holding the latter within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release and hold the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same within the casing and for releasing the barrel from said casing, and springs active against the actuator bars tohold the same in a normal position for holding the barrel against movement within the casing.
5. A look of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with said head, tumblers for rotatably operating within the barrel and easing at right anples to the longitudinal axis of the said barrel for holding the latter within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release and hold the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same within the casing, means for releasing the barrel from said casing, springs active against the actuator bars to hold the same in a normal position for holding the barrel against movement within the casing, the said tumblers each being in two sections, and means for interlocking one section of each tumbler with the casing.
6. A look of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with the said head, tumblers for rotatably operating within the barrel and casing at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the said barrel for holding the latter within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release and hold the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same within the casing, means for releasing the barrel from said casing, springs active against the actuator bars to hold the same in a normal position for holding the barrel against movement within the casing, the said tumblers each being in two sections, means for interlocking one section of each tumbler with the casing, and a removable section in the barrel for permitting access to the actuator bars for selective rearrangement thereof for changing permutation action of the same.
7. A lock of the kind described comprising a cylindrical casing, a head rotatably interfitted with one end of the casing, a barrel rotatably fitted in the casing and having coupling connection with said head, tumblers for rotatably operating within the barrel and casing at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the said barrel for holding the latter Within the casing, a plurality of actuator bars fitted within said barrel and coacting with the tumblers for disposing the same to release and hold the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars, springs active with the tumblers to urge the same in a position for freeing the barrel within the casing, a lug on the barrel for rotatably retaining the same Within the casing, means for releasing the barrel from said casing, springs active against the actuator bars to hold the same in a normal position for holding the barrel against movement within the casing, the said tumblers each being in two sections, means for interlocking one section of each tumbler with the casing, a removable section in the barrel for permitting access to the actuator bars for selective rearrangement thereof for changing permutation action of the same, and a disk-like head formed on the barrel and of a diameter equal to the diameter of the casing to overlap the same at its front end.
8. A look of the kind described comprising a casing, a rotatable barrel fitted in said casing, spring tensioned tumblers at one side of the barrel and housed by both the barrel and casing and rotatable on axes at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the latter for holding said barrel fixed, and a plurality of actuator bars independently slidable longitudinally of said barrel and coacting with the tumblers to release the said barrel with relation to the casing.
9. A look of the kind described comprising a casing, a rotatable barrel fitted'in said casing, spring tensioned tumblers at one side of the barrel and housed by both the barrel and casing and rotatable on axes at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the latter for holding said barrel fixed, and a plurality of spring tensioned actuator bars independently slidable longitudinally of said barrel and coacting with the tumblers to release the said barrel with relation to the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said actuator bars for receiving a key to operate the bars.
10. A look of the kind described comprising a casing, a barrel rotatably fitting said casing, tumblers disposed crosswise between and rotatably interfitting the casing and barrel at oppo site sides of the latter for holding the said barrel against rotation, and means confined within the barrel and slidable longitudinally of the same to free the barrel for rotation Within the casing.
11. A look of the kind described comprising a casing, a barrel rotatably fitting said casing, tumblers disposed crosswise between and rotatably interfitting the casing and barrel at opposite sides of the latter for holding the said barrel against rotation, and means confined within the barrel and slidable longitudinally of the same to free the barrel for rotation within the casing, said barrel having a keyway in the path of said means for receiving a key to operate the same.
12. In a lock of the kind described, a bolt actuating barrel rotatably supported, substantially cylindrical shaped sectional tumblers disposed crosswise of the barrel and housed in both the latter and a casing therefor for turning on axes at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the barrel for holding the said barrel fixed, and actuator means confined within the barrel and slid able longitudinally of the same to free said barrel for its rotation.
13. In a lock of the kind described, a bolt actuating barrel rotatably supported, rotatable tumblers disposed crosswise of the barrel and turning on axes at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the barrel for holding the said barrel fixed, actuator means confined within the barrel for actuating the tumblers to free said barrel for its rotation, and a plurality of actuator bars fitting the barrel and movable longitudinally thereof and coacting with the tumblers to permit release of said barrel for rotation thereof.
14. In a lock of the character described, a rotatable releasing barrel, a sectional cylindrical shaped tumbler rotatably supported crosswise of said barrel and movably housed for holding said barrel fixed, and means shiftable longitudinally of the barrel and coacting with said tumbler to free the barrel.
15. In a lock of the character described, a rotatable releasing barrel, a sectional cylindrical shaped tumbler rotatably supported crosswise of said barrel and movably housed for holding said barrel fixed, means shiftable longitudinally of the barrel and coacting with said tumbler to free the barrel, and means active upon the tumbler for normally maintaining it in position for holding the barrel fixed.
16. In a lock of the character described, a rotatable releasing barrel, a sectional cylindrical shaped tumbler rotatably supported crosswise of said barrel and movably housed for holding said barrel fixed, means shiftable longitudinally of the barrel and coacting with said tumbler to free the barrel, means active upon the tumbler for normally maintaining it in position for holding the barrel fixed, and a casing rotatably supporting said barrel and having a portion thereof for the interfitting of the tumbler therewith when the latter is in position for holding the barrel fixed.
17. In a lock of the character described, a rotatable releasing barrel, a sectional cylindrical shaped tumbler rotatably supported crosswise of said barrel and movably housed for holding said barrel fixed, means shiftable longitudinally of the barrel and coacting with said tumbler to free the barrel, means active upon the tumbler for normally maintaining it in position for holding the barrel fixed, and a casing rotatably supporting said barrel and having a portion thereof for the ,interfitting of the tumbler therewith when the latter is in position for holding the barrel fixed, the said barrel having a keyway for receiving a key for actuating said means.
