In U. S. Patent application Serial No. 753,653, filed November 19, 1934, a station scale for broadcast receiver apparatus has been disclosed in which the station names are arranged laterally in reference to one or more slots in a horizontal plate and in which the adjustment or tuning of the set can be read from a curve on a graph sheet caused to be reeled off at right angles to the slot. The number of stations is particularly very largein the case of highly sensitive long-distance receiver apparatus which allow of receiving a great number of transmitting stations so that owing to this large list of stations the scale becomes ;'rather complicated or crowded and is hard to follow, while the locating of the desired station name in the attempt to tune the apparatus is attended with a certain amount of labor. Now, in order that in tuning the set the location of the name of the particular station out of a long list appearing laterally of the slot and to which the apparatus is to be adjusted may be facilitated, a template shiftable or revoluble in reference to the cover plate is provided according to this invention between the curve-sheet and the slotted cover plate bearing the station names. The said template has a series of cut-outs which are coordinated to an alphabet arranged on the template in such a way that, upon adjustment of the template to a definite letter or group of letters of the alphabet the cut-outs of the template come to be positioned at those places of the slot in the cover-plate where the station names are indicated whose first letter is the same as the adjusted letter of the alphabet of the template. In other 35 Words, by the adjustment of the template only a certain number of stations starting with the same letter will be selected from the aggregate number of station names so that the desired station name can be located at once and that the tuning of the receiver to this station can be effected in that the reading curve which is visible at this particular place across the cut-out in the template can be adjusted in a way as described in the aforesaid patent application.

In the drawing, i denotes the cover plate having a slot 2 and on which the list of station names is According to this invention, a template 4 is interposed between the cover plate I and the curve-sheet 3. The said template 4 which is separately shown in Fig. 2 has a number of cutouts 5 arranged in lines, and laterally an alphabet 6 designating the line. may be moved to and fro at right angles to the slot by the agency of a manually operable toothwheel drive 1 whose teeth ll engage slots l2 in the template, and the cover plate I further has a slot 8 across which the letter in the alphabet designating the corresponding line of the cut-outs becomes visible as the template is moved. In the slot of the cover plate I will then appear the cutouts of the template corresponding to the line in question at those places where the station names having the same first letter are indicated. In other words, from the total number of station names only those will be selected which have the corresponding initial. For instance, if it is desired to tune the set to the London transmitter, then the wheel I is turned by the agency of the handle or knob 9 until in the slot 8 the letter L appears; there will then appear in the slot 2 several, say, three cut-outs, one of which is positioned on the station name London. The tuning of the set thereupon is accomplished in such a way that the reading curve (M) will appear in the above-mentioned cut-out. The set will then be tuned to the London station.
The template which solely serves for the easier location of the station names may also be moved to a point where it is no longer visible in the slot. This will be convenient in a case where the name of a station is to be determined to which the set just happens to be tuned.
Instead of disposing the template in a way so as to be shiftable at right angles to the slot, the disposition of the slots and of the alphabet could also be so chosen that the template is turned about an axis being at right angles to the cover plate.
In order to further facilitate and simplify the locating of the station names, the cut-outs of the template could be made in different colors to match, for instance, difierent Wave-lengths. The template could consist of a cellophane lamina Now, the. said template 4 which, with the exception of the cut-outs 5 and the alphabet 6 as shown in Fig. 2 is made dark, while the cut-outs 5 are colored variously but so that they will still be suiliciently transparent. Instead of this idea, also the contrary scheme could be adopted; in other words, the cut-outs 5 could be chosen darker and of different colors than the rest of the cellophane sheet. This affords the advantage that the reading curve may be traced also in the rest of the template so that thus the tuning of the set to the station names is faciliat-ed. Fig. 3 shows the guiding of the template 4 between cover plate I and curve-sheet 3.
The idea underlying the invention is not confined to a formation and arrangement of the template so that the cut-outs will correspond to an alphabetical selection of the station names. On the contrary, instead of an alphabetic disposition of the station names, also some other order may be used, e. g., the cut-outs could be so arranged that the adjustment of the template to a definite letter or other suitable symbol or identification mark will correspond to a selection of station names according to the size, distance, or location of the transmitters in definite regions or districts.
Having described my invention, what I claim as novel and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an indicator for a tuning means, the combination of a plate having an elongated slot therein, a series of station indicia marked on said plate lengthwise of said slot, a flexible sheet connected to said tuning means, a curve marked on said sheet to indicate the corresponding setting of said tuning means for each of said station indicia and a template movable to a plurality of positions and having a plurality of observation portions of limited area in alignment under said slot, each of said portions being opposite a different one of said station indicia and being constructed to transmit light from said curve.
2. In an indicator for a tuning means, the combination of a plate having an elongated slot therein, a series of station indicia marked on said plate along said slot, a flexible sheet connected to said tuning means, a plurality of curves marked on said sheet, a template formed of translucent material mounted between said plate and flexible sheet, said template having small areas formed in different colors and adapted to be moved under said slot.
3. The combination defined in the preceding claim in which said template is provided with letter markings in alignment with said small areas.
4. In an indicator for a tuning means, the combination of a plate having an elongated slot therein, a series of station indicia marked on said plate adjacent said slot, a flexible sheet connected to said tuning means, a curve marked on said sheet to indicate the setting of said tuning means for a plurality of said station positions, a template having a plurality of transparent areas arranged to be simultaneously positioned under said slot and a plurality of cut out portions arranged in align- I ment along each edge thereof, and a pair of rotatable members having projections engaging said out out portions.
