CA S TEE Filed April 9, 193s Inventor WA .'Woiwod Patented Oct. 27, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CASTER William A. Woiwod, Detroit, Mich.
Application April 9, 1936, Serial No. 73,541
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in casters of the glider type, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction through the medium of which furniture, particularly heavy, massive pieces, may be shifted with a minimum of short, noiselessly and without damaging floors, r'ugs, etc.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a caster of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use, compact, inconspicuous, which may be easily attached and which may be manufactured at low cost,
All of theforegoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a caster constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a View in side elevation of the invention, showing the same mounted on a piece of furniture.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an elongated, tubular body I of any suitable metal. It may be well to here state that the body I may be of any length and diameter, according to the size and weight of the furniture on which it is to be mounted.
The tubular body I terminates in closed, substantially flattened end portions providing integrai ears 2 which extend in the plane of the top of said body. The ears 2 are provided with apertures 3 for the passage of securing elements 4 for mounting the device on the base 5 of a piece of furniture.
It will thus be seen that a caster has been provided which may be expeditiously secured in position on the furniture. The shape of the body I is such that the device will glide noiselessly over a floor or rug with a minimum of eifort and without damaging said fioor or rug. Further, the body I is shaped to ride easily over obstructions or irregularities that may be encountered. Still further, the device, when applied, will be inconspicuous or substantially invisible.
It is believed that the many advantages of a caster constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
A caster comprising a substantially tubular, metallic body including closed, flattened ends providing apertured ears for attaching said body to a piece of furniture, said ears extending in the plane of the top of said body.
