More in detail, my invention comprises a :cylfin'der .mounted ior sliding movement within a housing and normally locked'against such sliding =1-5 :movement bya bolt. This'bolt is actuatedby rotation of the key plug of the cylinder so 'as to release-the cylinder for sliding movement, during whichsliding movement-it controls certain mechanism in a manner well understood :in this art.
An important feature of my invention is the means for -contrc'i1ling the movement of the cyl- Kinder within the housing while permitting its ready removal from the housing. -A-furtherimportant feature ot the invention :resides in the 12 means ior retaining -the plug within theoy-linder, and in the mounting of the key plugcontrolling ":btilt.
"Before describing the detailed construction of ta particulanmodification of my invention, itwill 3 be helpful to review generally its constructional features and thus point out the contributions which l have made to the art. My cylinder lock coritains a key 'plug which is inserted into the cylinder and thereafter is retained in the cylin- Fg5 -de r by a member which, preferably, is in the form-of a blocking member. This blocking mem- --ber prevents removal of the plug from the 'cylinder and, preferably, is itself retained "in the cylinder by a bolt protruding beyond the periph- 40 cry of the cylinder so as {to cooperate :with a retaining slot in the housing in which the cylinder operates. It therefore serves not only to retain the blocking member and key plug within the cylinder, but also coac'ts with the housing to as retain the cylinder in the housing and to limit the *movement of the cylinder in the housing. its a further feature, the blocking member preferably houses a belt which is adapted to do 'the actual locking of the cylinder within the hous- .550 ing, and which'bolt is actuated by the key p'lug.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, reference numeral ilil indicates a cylinder housingzadapted to house a cylinder I-l containiing'allooking plug 1-2 :operableby a key l3. The plug 12, when operated by the key 13 in the :usual manner understood in this art, is adapted through its :pin 23 to retracta locking bolt 14 which cooperates with a slot l5 in the cylinder housing ll ll, so as torelease the cylinder for move- =ment from;the pos'ition of Fig. 1170 the position illustrated in Fig 4. In this position, a spring pressed retaining bolt 1'6 will cooperate with the :slot I 5 :to re'tain the cylinder in its position illustrated in Fig. 4.
A-spring 11 is present *to urge the cylinder ll from'itsaposition of Fig. 1 to its position'of Fig. 4 wheneverthe cylinder is released bymovement of thelocking bolt as just described. It will be meadily understood that movement of the cylinder rfromthe'loc'king position of Fig. 1 to the unlocked position of 'Fig. "4 will release certain mechanism which it controls as will beclear to those skilled *in the art.
When it isdesired to remove the cylinder from itshousing, -a-tool i8 may be used to depress the 'aeta-ining bolt i=6 as illustrated in Fig. 6 so that "the cylinder may be readily removed as will be quite clear.
Referring nowmore particularly to'Figs. 8 to 15 inclusive, my key plug I2 is illustrated as containing a-plurality of tumblers l9 whereby it is locked against rotary movement in the cylinder l l, insertion of the key being adapted to release the plug and *permit its rotation in the usual way. This plug I -2 has a head which is smaller in diameter'than the body of the plug, and'forms a shoulder 20' -therewith,-so that the plug may be the retaining bolt l6 being spring pressed in an outward direction by its spring l6.
As will be readily understood, the detent retain ing bolt IE will cooperate with the opening 24 in the cylinder through which it protrudes to a maintain the backing member and consequently the plug within the cylinder II. At the same time, it cooperates with the backing member and the outer shell to maintain the cylinder l I within the housing I0, and for limiting the movement of the cylinder relatively to that housing when released by key operation. As will be noted especially in Fig. 10, the opening 25 through which the locking bolt I4 extends outwardly from the cylinder into the locking slot I5, is slightly enlarged so that the bolt I4 will slide freely relatively to the cylinder. This not only contributes a non-frictional sliding action of the bolt, but puts all the retaining stress on the auxiliary bolt detent I6.
While I have shown a particular modification of my invention, it should be understood that variations of the same within the scope of the appended claims will readily occur to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. In a look, a housing, a cylinder mounted for movement in said housing, a key plug in said cylinder operable to control the movement of said cylinder in the housing, and a single means carried by the cylinder and adapted to retain the plug in said cylinder while simultaneously retaining said cylinder in the housing.
2. In a look, a housing, a cylinder mounted for movement in said housing, a key plug in said cylinder operable to control the movement of said cylinder in the housing, and a single means adapted to retain the plug in said cylinder and said cylinder in the housing.
3. In a look, a housing, a cylinder mounted for movement in said housing, a key plug in said cylinder operable to control the movement of said cylinder in the housing, a retaining bolt mounted in said cylinder and cooperable with the housing to retain the cylinder in said housing, and means whereby said retaining bolt retains the plug in said cylinder.
4. In a lock, a housing, a cylinder mounted for movement in said housing, a key plug and a plug operated bolt carried by said cylinder, means whereby said bolt cooperates with the housing to lock the cylinder against movement relatively thereto, a detent carried by the cylinderand cooperable with the housing to retain the cylinder in said housing, and means whereby said detent also retains the plug within the cylinder.
5. In a look, a housing, a cylinder mounted for movement in said housing, a key plug in said cylinder, a backing member in said cylinder for retaining the plug in the cylinder, a pair of bolts mounted in said backing member, one of said bolts being adapted to lock said cylinder in said This backing member is further out out for the retention of the locking bolt l4 and the retaining bolt or detent I6,
housing, means whereby the said bolt is operated by said plug to lock and unlock the cylinder for movement in the housing, the other of said bolts being cooperable with the housing to retain the cylinder therein, and with the backing member to retain the plug in the cylinder.
6. In a look, a cylinder, a key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, means contained within the periphery of said cylinder adapted to abut said plug and obstruct its removal opposite to its direction of insertion, and a spring pressed detent cooperable with said means and adapted to maintain said means in the cylinder.
7. In a look, a cylinder, at key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, a backing member insertable endwise after said plug and adapted to maintain the plug in the cylinder, and a spring pressed detent mounted in said backing member and cooperable with the cylinder to maintain the backing member in the cylinder.
8. In a lock, a'cylinder, a key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, means in said cylinder adapted to obstruct removal of the plug, a detent in said cylinder for maintaining said obstructing means in operative position, a housing in which said cylinder is adapted to slide, said detent being cooperable also with the housing to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder within said housing 9. The combination of claim 6, a housing in which said cylinder is adapted to slide, said detent being cooperable also with the housing to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder within said housing.
10. The combination of claim 7, a housing in which said cylinder is adapted to slide, said detent being cooperable also with the housing to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder within said housing.
11. In a look, a cylinder, a key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, a locking bolt mounted in said cylinder and operable by said key plug, means in said cylinder adapted to obstruct removal of the plug, and a detent in said cylinder for maintaining said obstructing means in obstructing position.
12. In a look, a cylinder, a key plug insertable: endwise into said cylinder, a locking bolt mounted in said cylinder and operable by said key plug, means in said cylinder to abut said plug and obstruct its removal opposite to its direction of insertion, and a spring pressed detent cooperable with said means and adapted to maintain said means in the cylinder.
13. In a look, a cylinder, a key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, a backing member insertable behind said plug and adapted to obstruct its removal from the cylinder, a locking bolt mounted in said backing member and operable by the key plug, and a spring pressed detent mounted in said backing member and cooperable with the cylinder to maintain the backing member in the cylinder.
14. The combination of claim 11, a housing in which said cylinder slides and with which the locking bolt cooperates to lock the cylinder against movement, said detent being cooperable also with said housing to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder relatively thereto.
15. The combination of claim 12, a housing in which said cylinder slides and with which the locking bolt cooperates to lock the cylinder against movement, said detent being cooperable also with said housing to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder relatively thereto.
16. The combination of claim 13, a housing in which said cylinder slides and with which the locking bolt cooperates to lock the cylinder against movement, said detent being cooperable also with said housing, to retain and limit the movement of the cylinder relatively thereto.
17. In a lock, a cylinder, a key plug insertable endwise into said cylinder, means in said cylinder adapted to obstruct removalof the plug, a detent in said cylinder for maintaining said obstructing means in operativeposition, a housing in which said cylinder is mounted, and means whereby said detent is cooperable also with the housing to retain the cylinder within said housing.
18. The combination of claim 6, a housing in which said cylinder is mounted, said detent being cooperable also with the housing to retain the cylinder within said housing.
19. The combination of claim 'I, a housing in which said cylinder is mounted, said detent being cooperable also with the housing to retain the 10 cylinder within said housing.
