Description

J. T. SIMPSON.
Flood-Gate.
Patented J uly 9,1878- N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOH 'l. SIMPSON, OF MEIGS TOIVNSIIII, MUSKINGUM COUNTY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOD-GATES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205.812. dated July 9, 1811; application filed December 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
3e it known that I, JOHN T. SIMPSON, of Meigs township, in the county of Muskinguin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flood-Gates, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying urawin My invention relates to an improvement in swinging flood-gates, the object being to provide a gate which shall be durable in construction and arranged to be self-operatii'ig; and to that end my invention consists in a floodgate constructed as will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, A A represent two large main posts, which are firmly planted in the banks of the stream. To posts A A are hinged the gates E E, which consist of the uprights D D, frame-pieces B, and planking secured to said frame-pieces to form a strong and tight pair of swinging gates. The inner or adjacent ends of the gates are provided with depending bars O,'which extend below gates E into the stream spanned by the gate. To the lower edges of gates E E are jourualed the rock-shafts F, the ends of said shafts being journaled in the uprights D and depending end bars 0. Rock-shafts F have palings 9 attached thereto, said palings being of sufficient length to extend down into the stream. Gates E are held in a locked position by means of a metallic spring-bar, G.
From the above description it will be readily observed that when the water in the stream is of ordinary height the fence will be intact and prevent cattle from escaping by way of the bed of the stream. In the event of a flood the gates E E are released, as the spring-bar G will only sustain a limited strain, and hence allow the gates to swing back against the sides of the stream, and thus allow the surplus water and debris to escape without injury to the fence or gate. If desired, additional flood-gates H It may be secured to the main posts A A, and thus allow the water to pass freely through the same, and prevent the carryin g away of any portion of the fence.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A swinging flood-gate consistingin the combination, with the swinging gates E I), of the rock-shafts F F journaled to the lower edges of said gates, said rock-shafts having palin gs g g secured thereto, substantially as set forth.
JOHN T. SIMPSON.
