Description

Oct. 20, 1936. K 2,057,792
COMBINATION PENCIL AND ERASER Filed July 3, 1935 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 20, 1936 UNETEB STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to self-feeding lead pencils, some of which either are not provided with erasing means, or have the eraser so located that it is very inconvenient to use.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a pencil casing formed with an eraser housing disposed so that the eraser is positioned convenient for use without either inverting the pencil or having to remove a cap to expose the eraser, or perform some other and relatively inconvenient operation.
A further object is to mount the eraser in connection with its housing or holder so that the eraser is normally concealed but may be instantly and easily projected to position for use by the same hand holding the pencil and without shifting the hand position or inverting the pencil. In other words, if the person writing makes an error he can without shifting the pencil in the hand erase the error almost the instant it is made.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly efiective for the pur pose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination self-feeding pencil showing my eraser housing formed with the casing of the pencil; the eraser being in its normal concealed position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side view of the pencil casing partly in section showing the eraser in its concealed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the eraser as extended.
Referring now more particularly to the char acters of reference on the drawing, the pencil which may be of any of the various self-feeding types suitable for my purpose, comprises essentially a cylindrical casing l tapering as at 2 to its tip as usual, from which tip the lead 3 projects for writing.
Formed with the casing and extending parallel thereto for a relatively short distance back from the tapered portion 2 is a relatively small cylindrical housing 4, preferably countersunk into the casing as much as possible to conserve space. The housing is permanently closed at its rear end but is open at the front or at the end facing the tip of the pencil, said housing merging into the tapering surface of the tip portion, as shown. The open end of said housing is normally closed by a spring actuated hinge or flap door 5.
Slidable in the housing and having a length relative thereto so as to be entirely contained therein is a sleeve 6 forming a holder in the outer portion of which a cylindrical eraser l is mounted. The sleeve adjacent its outer end is preferably provided with interior threads 8 so that the eraser as it swings down may be adjusted outwardly of the sleeve. The sleeve is normally held I retracted in the housing by a tension spring 9 sleeve to be projected so that the exposed tip 20 of the eraser will be disposed beyond the tip of the pencil, so that said eraser may engage the paper instead of the lid. As the eraser thus advances it of course pushes the door open, and said door closes of itself when the eraser is again retracted into the housing. The pencil is held so that the housing projects between the thumb and forefinger and the element ll may then be easily engaged and pushed forward by bending said finger back sufficiently to engage said element.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a tubular casing having a longitudinal depression along one side thereof and having one end tapered, a relatively small cylindrical housing extending parallel to and countersunk for a portion of its circumference in the depressed portion of the casing, said housing terminating substantially at the point of intersection of the tapered portion of the casing with said depressed portion thereof, the casing being open at said termination; and eraser holding means slidably mounted and normally enclosed within the housing and projectible at will from the open end thereof.
