generally and more particularly pointed out in This invention relates broadly to means adapted to facilitate the removal of the valves of an internal combustion engine,
The present practice of removing the springs of the valves from the detachable heads of gas engines of the overhead valve type, by the use of the conventional hand tools, for the purpose of grinding the valves of such engines, requires considerable labor, patience, and time.
The general object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which the valve springs may be conveniently and quickly removed, with little labor, from the detachable heads of overhead valve gas engines, and by means of whichA the heads may be readily supported in a convenient position for grinding the valves.
Another object is to provide an apparatus of the character stated which is simple in construction, inexpensive, and highly practical and eicient in operation.
Another object is to provide a device adapted to hold a cylinder head and valves, together with suitable tools, and which device is readily movable from place to place as may be required, to the end that the cylinder head and valves may be worked upon.
Another object is the provision of an apparatus constituting a table so constructed and arranged as to permit a cylinder head to assume two positions thereupon and to be maintained in the position selected.
I do not wish to restrict my invention in its broad aspect to a table but in practicing the invention, I provide what may be termed a bench or table mounted upon castors or small wheels, to the end that a mechanic can readily move the bench or table adjacent an automobile from which a cylinder head is to be removed for placement thereon. The present embodiment of the invention, as hereinafter set forth, contemplates the placement of the cylinder head upon the top of the bench or table in such a manner that the cylinder head may assume two positions, one for the removal of the valve springs, and a second position to be assumed when it is desired to remove the valves from the cylinder head for the purpose of grinding the valves, and/or seating the valves to the said head.
With the above mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, construction, association and relative arrangement of parts, members, and features, all as shown in a certain embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described the claim.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Referring with particularity to the drawings, I designates a table comprising a top 2, top supporting frame 3, legs 4, and a bracing frame 5 'secured to the legs near the lower ends thereof.
Upstanding rails 6 and 1 may be secured to the rear and end edges respectively of the top 2, to prevent objects, such as valve parts, from dropping off said edges of the top.
A pair of standards 8 are secured to the top 2 of the table, by bolts 9, near the rear of the top, which standards are formed with bearings I0, in their upper ends, in which are journaled cylindrical ends II of a square rock-shaft I2 extending longitudinally of the table or parallel to the front and rear edges of the table top 2. On said shaft I2, a lever I3 is secured adjacent one of the standards 8 by means of a pin I4 and clamp I5, formed in the lever and including a clamp bolt I6. To the rear end of said lever I3 is connected the upper end of a spring I 1, the lower end of Which spring is connected tol a hook The forward end `vention are as follows:

A foot treadle 23 is secure-d to the shaft 2i and extends forwardly to a point in front cf the table l to be depressed by the foot of the operator of my apparatus, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

By inserting the pin 3l through diiferent pairs of holes 32 in the shank 29, the arm 24 may be oennected at different positions to1 the shank 2S for adjusting the position of the -depresser head 2l to engage the valve springV retaining washers at different elevations in different cylinder heads.
The table top 2 is formed with' aihingedl leaf extending inwardly from the forward edge of the top in front of the shaft l2, which leaf is hinged at its forward edge, by double-pivot hinges 3d, to the front angle iron member 35 of the frame E3 cf thetable. top 2, whereby said leaf S3 may swing into or out of the opening 3.'L,in the table top 2 on the hinge pivots 38 andidownwardly in front of thetable (Figure 6) or iupwardly therefrom on the hinge pivots 39 to be swung into said opening 3l as aforesaid; Y .On cross members of the table top frame 3, at' the ends 'respectively of the leaf opening 3l, are formed sockets 4i andd near the inner. edge of said opening, in either of which sockets may be placed therends of a rail 53, which, together with the front member 35 of said tcp frame, is adapted to support a cylinder head in said leaf opening for grinding the Valves .in said head,.when the leaf is swung out of said opening, and down in front of the table. For supporting the valves in lthe cylinder head while the head is 'positioned on the table for depressing the valve springs to remove the spring retainer locks, I provide a supporting plate 44 formed with a plurality of upstandingvalve supporting bases 45. f Y
The head is provided with an annular recessed portion 2M. This recessed portion; is adapte-d to receive and connerthe washer 52 and hence hold the washer in position against lateral displacement when the head 21 is being depressed to in turn depress the washer and its associated spring 53. The lock 54 is then removed bythe operator from the annular groove 56-in thevalve stem 5i, and the operator then releases his foot from the treadle 23, whereupon the treadle, through the medium of lever, |3, rod |9, armiiland rock shaft 2l, is raisedback to its normal position and the plunger 25; ,through arm 24, is likewise raised, by the spring H, untilrthe depressor head2? is withdrawn from the valve spring retaining washer 2T andthe upper end of the valve stem 5|. .The Yoperator then removes the retaining washer and the valve spring 53 from the valve stem 5l.
The operator Vvthen moves the arm 24along the rock shaft I2 progressivelyutoreach of the remaining valves, andthe above-described operations A are repeated Vto remove the retaining lock 54 `of each remaining valve spring washer 52, so that all of said Washers and valve springs may be removed bythe operator. When, the retaining locks 54, washers 52 and springs 53 are removed from all of the valves, the `operator swings the leaf: 23, upwardly out o f the opening 31 in the table top and downwardly on the hinges 34 in front of the table and the operator then inverts thei cylinder headV 50, with the plate 44 engaging the bottom of; the head 50 and the Vbases 45H engaging thevalves and places the engine head in said opening *'31 upon the front member A35 ofthe Vtop frame 3 and the supporting rail .43 in position for grinding the valves inaisaid head., The valves arethen removed and faced, the valve seat reamed, then` the valves areground in the usual manner.
After the valves are groundthe cylinder head is then inverted right-side up and placed upon the tabletop, resting upon the supporting plate -44; the springs and'retaihing washers are placed i over the valve stems; the retaining washers and The cylinder head is conveniently and easily handled and the valve spring retaining elements and springs of the engine are easily removed and replaced by the use of my improved apparatus, and considerable labor, patience and time are thus saved.
The top 2 is of suicient size to allow the Valve springs and other elements to be definitely positioned thereupon or in trays made for that purpose, to the end that the valves and springs, together with the retaining elements, may be again positioned in the cylinder head and in they same sequence in which they were removed. This is important for proper operation of the engine, as is self-evident.
It is obvious that various changes and modilcations and variations may be made in practicing the invention in departure from the particular showing of the drawings without departing from the true spirit of the invention.
I claim:
An apparatus as disclosed comprising a table, means for supporting a cylinder head with valves on the rear portion of said table, means on said table for removing the retainer looks, retainer washers and valve springs from the valves and the cylinder head, while said head is supported on the rear portion of said table, said table being formed with an opening in the forward portion thereof immediately forwardly of the position in which said cylinder head is supported on the table for removal of the retainer locks, washers, and valve springs, a leaf hinged to the forward edge of the table normally resting within and closing said opening, but adapted to swing out of said opening and down in front of the table so that the cylinder head may be received inverted in said opening, and means for supporting the inverted cylinder head in said opening for grinding the valves.
