WILLIAM Y. ROHRBAOH, OF KRIBBS FARM, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR CASING-HEADS OF OIL-WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,577, dated July 2, 1878; application filed January 31, 1878.
1'0 aLL whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Y. ROHRBACH, of Kribbs Farm, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cover for Casing-Heads of Oil- Wells, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section, of myimproved cover for easingheads of oil and other wells. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the position of the tube-clamp in relation to the cover and lugs thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for oil-wells an improved casing-head cover, by which some of the disadval'ltages of the present head are overcome and a superior cover obtained.
The invention consists of a cover for the casing-heads of oil-wells in which the guidehole for the tubing is made with an outward taper or flare toward the upper and lower edge of the hole; and it consists, secondly, of providing the cover with two top lugs for preventing the clamps or elevators from spread- 111g.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a cover for the casing-heads of oil-wells, which is attached to the head in the usual manner by clampscrews passing through perforated ears a of the head.
The guide-hole I) for the oil-well tubing is made with an outward taper or flare, that extends from a horizontal center line of said hole to the top and bottom of the cover, so as to make the hole of less diameter at the middle and of gradually-increasing width toward the top and bottom of the cover, as shown in Fig. 2.
The double tapering hole guides the tubing without the catching of the thimbles on the sides of the holes, as is the case in the old covers, which require a man to guide the tubing.
The catching of the tubing produces the slackening of the suspension-rope above, and, when the tubing suddenly slides 01f, the breaking of the rope and the dropping of the tubing, so as to do great injury and damage.
The cover A is also provided with two tapering top lugs, d, which prevent the spreading of the elevators or clamps now in use. These clamps are held together by a link, about a foot long, which stands in an upright position when in use, and which is liable at any time to be knocked down, so that the clamps will spread and drop the tubing. By the use of the top lugs the link can be dropped without any danger, as the clamps cannot spread until the tubing is raised, so that the clamps can be taken out from between the lugs and removed.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover for the casing-heads of oil-wells, having a guidehole for the tubing that is made with a double flare or taper in upward and downward direction, so as to prevent catching of thimbles, substantially as specified.
2. A cover for the casing-heads of oil-wells, having top lugs sidewise of the guide-hole for the tubing, to prevent spreading of elevators or clamps, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM YODER ROHRBACH.
