Patented Sept. 22, 1936 PATENT OFFICE FEED COLLET FOR Alexis Naert,
AUTOMATIC SCREW CHINES Detroit, Mich.
Application December 9, 1935, Serial No. 53,499
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in feed collets or stock pushers adapted for use in connection with automatic screw machines and similar machinery, and has for its principal object the provision of a device of this character that is composed of two members with an improved method for clamping the same to the feed rod of metal being used, and in this manner breaking of the device is positively prevented.
The great difliculty with the devices for this purpose now in use is that they are usually composed of a single piece of metal with a portion thereof slotted so as to give spring action to the metal of this portion, and the device depends solely upon the spring-tensioned jaws for gripping the feed rod. inasmuch as it is necessary for this class of devices to be made of high grade tool steel, the jaws thereof formed by slotting the collet are readily susceptible to breakage, and when this occurs there is a serious delay in production work and loss accordingly.
l The invention possesses further advantages, all of which will be clearly revealed during the course of the following detailed description, illustrated throughout the accompanying drawing, and
o more fully pointed out in the appended claim.
With reference to the drawing: Figure l is an elevation of the complete device showing same in the act of gripping a feed rod.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the assem- Y bly shown in Figure l, and through the center thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the principal member of the device; and, Figure 4 is a similar view of the remaining member thereof.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the principal member of the device.
Figure 6 is a transverse section taken directly upon line 6--6 of Figure 1; and, Figure 7 is a similar view taken upon line 'I-l of Figure l.
Figure 8 is a side elevation of one of the members of the device.
In further carrying out of the invention, elements associated with the same but not a part thereof will be designated by consecutive letters of the alphabet, while the invention proper will be distinguished therefrom by the customary reference numerals.
The invention comprises ing tubular body 2 which is adapted to detachably engage tube A of the screw machine or the like. Body I has elongated portion 3 extended therefrom as indiprincipal member hav- I with external threaded shank cated and said portion has semi-circular channel 4 therein so as to conform likewise to feed rod B.
Additional semi-cylindrical member 5 is provided and also has channel 6 therein and similar to channel 4 of the principal member. Channels 5 4 and 6 provide an extensive bearing surface for rod B thereby enhancing the value of the collet for this purpose.
Spring 1 is provided and is of a tubular formation. It is adapted to telescopically connect por- 10 tion 3 of the principal member and the opposite member, as clearly indicated in Figure 7. Semicircular cutaway portion 8 of the principal member and similar portion 9 of the opposite mem-` ber are provided for the accommodation of spring l5 l, as clearly shown in Figures 3, 4, 5 and 8.
Referring more particularly to Figures 3 and 5 it is observed that llets I0 are arranged where shown so as to reinforce the principal memberA and thereby to prevent liability of breakage relative to portion 3 of said member.
Apertures I I are provided where shown in body I of the principal member which are adapted for the application of a suitable wrench for engaging the device with tube A.
From the foregoing it is clearly understood that the pressure being uniformly exerted upon both members of the device by spring 1, will cause same to positively grip rod B as it is intermittently drawn to the cutting tool of the screw machine or the like in the normal operation in this class of work, and that breakage of the device is obviously prevented by reason of the particular construction thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a feed collet, a tubular body having a screwthreaded portion at one end, a semi-cylindrical jaw extending from the other end of said tubular body, reinforcing fillets formed at the juncture of the tubular body and said semi-cylindrical jaw, a separate complementary semi-cylindrical jaw coacting with the first mentioned jaw to engage stock extending between the jaws and through the tubular body, and a relatively wide split spring band encircling'the jaws to maintain the same in gripping contact with the stock the outer faces of the jaws being cut out to receive and confine the spring band, the outer surface of the spring band lying flush with the outer surface of the jaws, said cut out portions and spring band extending for the greater length of the jaws.
ALEXIS NAERT.
