more particularly to a separable contact cap and socket adaptedfor use with a type of lamp having a contact ferrule at each end.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved/connecter consisting of a minimum number of parts which may be readily assembled and manufactured at a low cost.
Another object of my invention is to provide a connecter which is simple in construction and serves to readily connect a lamp in the circuit and to hold the lamp securely in position.
What I consider to be novel and my invention will be better understood by reference to the following specification and appended claims when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a lamp with one connecter at each end; Fig. 2 is a side view showing two lamps connected in tandem; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a lamp, contact cap and socket; Fig. 4 is an exploded view of a'socket; Fig. 5 is a detail view in per spective of a part of the contact cap; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a double socket arranged for nozzle mounting; Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a nozzle mounted socket, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a single socket arranged for nozzle mounting.
Referring to the drawing, l indicates a lamp of cylindrical shape having a filament Ilia extending from end to end and connected to aferrule II at one end and a ferrule I2 at the other end. To connect lamp III in an electric circuit a connector I3 is provided at each end of the lamp. As is better indicated in Fig. 3,,connecter l3 consists of a contact cap l4 and a socket I51 Contact cap I4 is provided with a substantially fiat circular metal contact I 6 and a cover I! of insulating material. Contact l6 has spring fingers l8 extending at right angles from one face which are adapted to engage an opening I9 in the i'errule l2 to complete the electrical connection to the lamp. Opening I9 is tapered so that spring fingers l8 urge contact l6 into firm engagement with ferrule l2 and produce a good-electric contact. As may be seen in Fig. 5,"contact I6 is provided with a plurality of peripheral projections 20. When contact I6 is assembled within a circular recess 43in cover l1, projections 20 extend at an angle from contact l6 and are pressed down so that they are embedded in the cover H. To connect the contact cap l4 to the socket I a radially projecting tang 2| is provided integral with contact l6. To increase the contact area of tang 2|, turned-up lip 22 is provided. The contact i6 is. formed in one piece by first blanking out the contact and then bending up the fingers l8, projections 20 and the lip 22 on tang 2|. Cover l1 not only serves to enclose contact IE but also provides an insulating cover for ferrule 5 l2. Socket l5 consists of a base 23 of insulating material in which is located a contact clip 24 with two resilient contact fingers 44 integrally connected to terminal 25 which extends parallel to the contact fingers. Terminal 25 has a threaded. aperture 26 in which a binding screw 21 may be threaded to connect a conductor to the socket. Clip 24 is located in a chamber 28 with a top opening 45 communicating therewith in base 23 and terminal 25' rests against shoulders 29 within a side opening 30 communicating with chamber 28. The clip 24 is adapted to be inserted from the bottom through an. opening 46 of base 23 and held in place by means of a plate 3i of fibrous material located over the bottom of base 23. Plate 3| is secured to base 23 by means of hollow rivets, not shown, which are secured in openings 32 and 33. To secure the socket l5 to a support, screws may be passed through the'hollow rivets located in openings 32 and 33 and. through corresponding openings in plate 3|. In the form of socket. shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, a base 34 of insulating material has an integral nozzle 35 extending from the bottom. Nozzle 35 is provided with screw threads adapted to receive a nut 40 for securing the base 34 in position in an opening of a plate 4 I. A lock washer 42 is interposed between plate 4| and-nut 40. .A contact clip 36 is secured in base 34 by means of a hollow threaded rivet 31 which passes through the nozzle and is turned 35 over at both ends. Electrical connection may be made to the socket by means of a bindingscrew 38 which is threaded in the rivet 31. Contact clip 36 is adapted to receive a tang 2| of the contact cap I 4. In Figs. 2 and 6, double sockets are 40 shown which are adapted to receive two contact caps l4 to connect two lamps in tandem. In each case, two contact clips are provided integrally connected. In Fig. 6 it may be seen that a wall 39 extends from the sides of base 34 and partially separates the two contact clips.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a connecter for a lamp of cylindrical shape is provided to readily connect the lamp to, or disconnect it from, an electric circuit.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States'is:
1. An electric connecter comprising a cover of insulating material having a circular recess, a substantially flat contact secured within said recess by projections extending from the periphery of the contact, said contact having spring fingers extending from one face and a tang extending radially beyond said cover, a base of insulating material having an opening through which said tang may enter and a second opening, a contact clip inserted in the second opening of said base engaging said tang, a binding screw threaded in said contact clip, and a plate of insulating material covering the second opening and secured to said base.
2. An electric socket comprising a base of insulating material having an opening in the top through which a contact may enter and an opening in the bottom, a contact clip inserted in the opening in the bottom of said base having two resilient contact fingers adapted to engage the sides of a contact inserted through the top opening, a terminal connected to said contact clip extending parallel to said contact fingers, said terminal resting on a shoulder within a side opening of said base, a binding screw threaded in said terminal, and a plate of insulating material secured to said base covering the bottom opening and adapted to hold said contact clip and said terminal in said base.
3. An electric connecter comprising a cover of insulating material having a circular recess, a substantially fiat contact secured within said recess by projections extending from the periphery of the contact, said contact having integral spring fingers extending from one face and a tang extending radially beyond said cover, a base of insulating material having an opening in the top through which said tang may enter and an opening in the bottom, a contact clip inserted in the opening in the bottom of said base having two resilient contact fingers engaging the sides of said tang, a terminal connected to said contact clip, a binding screw threaded in said terminal, and a plate of insulating material secured to said base covering the bottom opening and adapted to hold said contact clip and said terminal in said base.
4. A connecter for an electric lamp of the cylindrical type with a filament connected to a metal ferrule at each end including a substantially fiat circular contact with spring fingers extending from one face entering an opening of said ferrule, projections extending from the periphery to secure the contact to a support, and a tang extending radially from said contact.
5. A connecter for an electric lamp of the cylindrical type with a filament connected to a metal ferrule at each and including a substantially fiat contact with spring fingers extending from one face and entering an opening of said ferrule, a cover of insulating material enclosing said contact and said ferrule, projections extending from the periphery of the contact to secure said contact to said cover, and a. tang extending radially from said contact beyond said cover.
6. A connecter for an electric lamp of the cylindrical type with a filament connected to a metal ferrule at each end including a substantially fiat contact with spring fingers extending from one face and entering an opening of said ferrule, a cover of insulating material enclosing said contact and said ferrule, projections extending from the periphery of the contact to secure said contact to said cover, a tang extending radially from said contact beyond said cover, a base of insulating material having an opening through which said tang may enter and a second opening, a contact clip inserted in the second opening of said base having two resilient contact fingers engaging said tang, a terminal connected to said contact clip, and a plate of insulating material secured to said base covering the second opening.
7. A connecter including a substantially fiat circular contact with integral spring fingers extending from one face, projections. extending from the periphery to secure the contact to a support, and a tang extending from the circumference of said circular contact.
8. A connecter including a substantially flat circular contact with integral spring fingers extending at right angles from one face, projections extending from the periphery to secure the contact to a support, and a tang extending from the circumference of said contact having upturned lips around its edge.
9. An electric connecter comprising a cover of insulating material having a circular recess and a substantially fiat contact secured within said recess by projections extending from the periphery of the contact, said contact having spring fingers extending from one'face and a tang extending from its circumference beyond said cover.
