Description

P ,1 A. PARJANEN 2,053,736
DRILLING MACHINE Filed May 15, 1935 nve-n'fiov ADAM PARJANEN Patented Sept. 8, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFHQE Application May 15, 1935, Serial No. 21,619 In Finland May 17, 1934 5 Claims.
It is generally known that the surface of castings has to be cleaned and smoothed by the aid of a chisel. Likewise all kinds of iron goods shall be cleaned and any rust removed from their surface before painting. Also for working stones, especially for making figures or letters on the surface of stones a small hammerlike tool is required.
This invention relates to a combined chisel and hammer that is automatically driven by a drilling machine. This device may be attached to an ordinary hand drilling machine driven, for instance, by an electric motor and thus a cheap and convenient tool is obtained for the above mentioned purposes without necessitating the purchase of comparatively much more expensive pneumatic tools and compressors required in connection with them.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of the apparatus according to this invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view of the device attached to a hand drilling machine.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same machine from below.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the cam wheel attached to the spindle of the drilling machine.
A ring 3 is attached by means of screws or bolts 2 to the frame of the drilling machine and to this ring 3 the device according to this invention is attached by means of rivets or other suitable means. To enable quick attachment and removal of the ring, the bolt 2 may be provided with a wing nut.
A rigid arm 5 and a hammer shaft 6 are attached to the ring 3. The hammer shaft 6 is provided with a pivot 1. To the other end of the hammer shaft a chisel or hammer 8 is attached, both heads of which are formed into working tools which may be used alternately by reversing the hammer. The hammer shaft 6 is shown with a pivot I toallow its movement up and down, but this may be obtained by any other suitable arrangement.
A spring 9 is placed between the arm 5 and the hammer shaft 6 and held in position by short bolts or heads Ill attached to the arm 5 and the shaft 6. The pivot 1 prevents sideways movements of the shaft 6. About at the middle of the hammer shaft are provided two downwardly directed extensions ll between which a roller I2 is attached the journals of the roller extending through the extensions or flanges II.
For the purpose of giving the tool 8 a rapid movement up and down the spindle [3 of the drilling machine has been extended and to the same has been attached a cam- Wheel 14 exactly below the roller I2. The spindle l3 causes the cam wheel to rotate and the cams l5 of the latter push the roller l2 and thereby the shaft 6 up against the pressure of the spring 9. As soon as the cam l5 leaves the roller l2 the spring will push the shaft 6 into its original position. The tool 8 will thus move up and down. In the drawing the cam wheel I4 is illustrated as having three cams I5, but the number of the cams may vary as desired. The extension of the spindle is supported by the bearing l6 supported by a flange H extending from the ring 3.
This invention enables the use of the drilling 15 machine for various kinds of work. Hitherto the drilling machine has been used for drilling, grinding, scraping and brushing, but by means of this device the same may also be used for chiseling and hammering and the like operations. Also lighter riveting work may be executed by using this device and very good results have been obtained v with the test device made by the inventor.
The cam wheel mechanism may, of course, be replaced by an excentric, a crank and crank rod or the like without deviating from the scope of this invention.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I hereby 30 declare that what I claim is:
1. In combination with a hand drilling machine having a body and a rotating spindle, a bracket secured to said body and projecting therefrom, a bearing carried by said bracket for sup- 35 porting said spindle, a fixed arm and a hinged shaft carried by said drilling machine, a hammer tool carried by said hinged shaft, a spring between said fixed arm and said hinged shaft, and an operating connection between said spindle and said 40 hinged shaft for giving said hinged shaft a movement up and down.
2. In combination with a hand drilling machine having a body and a rotating spindle, a bracket secured to said body and projecting therefrom, a 45 hearing carried by said bracket for supporting said spindle, a fixed arm and a hinged shaft carried by said drilling machine, a hammer tool carried by said hinged shaft, a spring between said fixed arm and said hinged shaft, an operating connection between said spindle and said hinged shaft for giving said hinged shaft a movement up and down, said operating connection comprising a cam wheel on said spindle and a roller on said 55 pivoted shaft held by said spring to engage said cam wheel.
3. In combination with a hand drilling machine having a body and a rotating spindle, a bracket secured to said body and projecting therefrom, a bearing carried by said bracket for supporting said spindle, a fixed arm and a hinged shaft carried by said drilling machine, a hammer tool carried by said hinged shaft, a spring between said fixed arm and said hinged shaft, an operating connection between said spindle and said hinged shaft for giving said hinged shaft a movement up and down, said operating connection comprising an excentric on the spindle of the drilling machine, which excentric operatively engages said pivoted shaft.
4. In combination with a hand drilling machine having a body and a rotating spindle, a bracket secured to said body and projecting therefrom, a bearing carried by said bracket for supporting said spindle, a fixed arm and a hinged shaft carried by said drilling machine, a hammer tool carried by said hinged shaft, a spring between said fixed arm and said hinged shaft, and an operating connection between said spindle and said hinged shaft for giving said hinged shaft a movement up and down, said operating connection comprising a crank and crank rod.
5. A chiselling or hammering device for use with hand drilling machines, comprising a ring for attachment to the body of the drilling machine, a bracket extending from said ring, a spindle supporting bearing carried by said bracket, in which bearing the spindle of the drilling machine is supportable, a cam wheel for attachment to the spindle of the drilling machine, a hammer shaft pivotally attached to said ring, an arm rigidly attached to said ring, a spring between said hammer shaft and said rigidly attached arm to hold said hammer shaft in cooperative relation to said cam wheel so that rotation of the spindle will effect a resilient movement up and down of 20 the hammer shaft.
