Description

Sept. 1, 1936. w. c. HIERING HANDBAG Filed July 29, 1935 ,7 I INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 1, 1936 oFFleE V HANDBAG William 0. flitti g, Miiiijiihi Biiiiiifi; E53 County, N. .L, assignor tf l E. Mergott Company, Newark, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application July 29, 1933; Serial No. 682,738
' 2 Claims; (01. mo /295* M'Ihis invention relates to hand bags and more particularly to improvements in frames for use in ,hand bags,
,,,l?t has been common practice in the manufacture of hand bags to use channelledframe members to which bag covering material is at tached by. various expedie'nts. Heretofore the means for attaching bag covering material to the'frame members have been satisfactory with the exception that an appreciable amount of labor is required in the attaching process, which increases the cost of manufacturing the bag. This is objectionable in that the merchandising of hand bags has become highly competitive and it is necessary, in order to profitably merchandise such bags, that the labor cost be reduced to'a minimum.
Heretofore, tabs have been provided on the bottom flange of an outwardly opening channelled frame member for holding an inlay in place. But such a structure has been found objectionable in that when bag covering material is attached to the inlay, the tabs are concealed and not readily accessible, necessitating the use of pliers or special tools to bend them upward for the purposeof holding the inlay in position on the frame member. The process of bending the tabs is tedious and considerable force is applied to the frame member itself resulting in many instances in distorting and marring the frame member.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a hand bag frame member having means for attaching bag covering material thereto with a minimum amount of time and labor.
A further object is the provision, in a hand bag frame member of a channelled type, of means depending from an upper side wall of a channelled frame member to secure bag covering material to the frame.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a hand bag frame having an outwardly opening channelled frame member with top and bottom flanges, the top flange being provided with spaced tabs or similar means for securely holding an inlay in the frame member, the inlay having bag covering material attached thereto.
These and other advantageous objects which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of bag frames embodying my invention, and
showing the insert; carrying bag covering mat'eriail; adapted to be positioned in the frame member} Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary perspective view of one of the frame members showing the manner iiiwhich the bag frame tab is bent over th bag covering material to secure the same in the frame member, and r v Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are similar views of modified forms of my invention.
Referring to the drawing, in Fig. 1 is show a pair of substantially U-shaped bag frame members hingedly connected in a well known manner. Each frame member has an inner wall 5, with a right angularly directed flange 6 at the 5 upper edge of said inner wall and a right-angularly directed flange I6 at the lower edge thereof. Integral with the flange 6 are a plurality of tabs 1, which are bent over as shown in Fig. 2, to securely hold the bag covering material 8, in the frame member. Preferably, an edge of the bag covering material is clinched in a channelled inlay 9, which is positioned in the frame member on the flange it, after which the tabs 1 are bent over the inlay 9 to hold it in position. The marginal edges of the handbag material are preferably secured in three inlays, one of which, as shown in the drawing, is positioned in the horizontal portion of the frame member, the other two being positioned in the leg members of the frames. The use of three inlays is well-known in the art and shown in Patent No. 1,915,313, dated June 27, 1933.
From the above description, it will be seen that the attaching of the bag covering material to the frame member embodying my invention is a simple matter. It is only necessary that the bag covering material be inserted in the frame member against the inner wall 5 and below the flange 6, and then bend the tabs 1 downwardly to tightly clinch the covering material in the frame member. Obviously this operation requires very little time, and does not require the use of skilled labor as the process can be readily performed by unskilled persons.
By using my frame member, obviously the cost of manufacturing a hand bag is greatly reduced. At the same time, the depending tabs 1 may be used for ornamental purposes. For example the tabs I, for the use of bridge players, can be formed in the shape of clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades. Also, the tabs I may be used as supports for various other types of ornamentation, such as initial letters and emblems, 1' (see Fig. 3).
It will be noted that the spaced tabs 1 are at all 55 upper edge of the inner wall I I, has secured to said flange I2 by soldering or similar means, a wire or rod l3, which extends the length of the flange l2. With this form of the invention, the bag covering material I4 is placed against the inner wall I I, and below the flange I2, after which the wire or rod I3 is bent downwardly to clinch the bag covering material tightly against the inner wall I I. If desired, an inlay I5 can be used in.
connection with the bag covering material as de'-" scribed above with reference to Fig. 1.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a bag frame member of simple structure to which bag covering material may be readily and conveniently attached with a minimum of time and without resort to skilled labor.
The foregoing disclosure isto be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obiously an embodiment may be constructed ineluding many modifications, without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' ent, is:
1. In a hand bag, a pair of hingedly connected corresponding frame members, each frame member comprising an inner side wall provided with outwardly projecting top and bottom flanges, a channelled inlay, bag covering material attached to the inlay, said inlay being positioned on said bottom flange, a pair of spaced tabs integral with said top flange, and a bar spaced from the top flange and connecting said tabs, said bar and tabs extending downwardly to hold the inlay in position on the bottom flange.
2; In a hand bag, a frame member having an inner wall provided with outwardly directed top and bottom flanges, a channelled inlay having bag covering material .attached thereto, said inlay being positioned'on the bottom flange of the frame member, and a plurality of spaced tabs in tegral with the top flange, said tabs being bent downwardly-over thebag covering material and inlay and extending to points'adjacent the bottom flange to securely holdthe inlay in the frame member. 1
