l This invention relates to a package tying machine and concerns itself with an apparatus that winds some tying element such as ribbon, string or tape around the package and ties or fastens the same with a metal clip that is formed in the apparatus and applied to the tying element after it has been wrapped around the package.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combination of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claims.

The machine or apparatus herein disclosed comprises a plurality of castings I, 2 and 3 which are arranged in parallel spaced relation to constitute three supporting walls for the parts of the machine. These castings are `adapted to rest upon a table or some suitable support. Upon the top of these castings lthere is screwedajtable 4 having a slot 5 (Figure 13) extending inwardly from its outer end to a distance substantially midway of the table for receiving the tying element 6 which is wound upon a reel l which -is mounted upon a shaft 8 (Fig. 2) supported upon a standard 9 attached to the far ends of the castings I and 2. A sleeve Ill having a iianged end lila for engaging one end of Ythe reel has a bayonet slot II thru which a screw I2 of the shaft 8 extends. A coil spring I3 surrounds the shaft 8 and normally bears against the end of the sleeve I0. The screw I2 is normally in the straight portion of the slot II-so that the sleeve I0 can slide upon the shaft and offer a certain amount of frictional resistance to the reel. The sleeve I0, however, can be slid until the screw registers with the offset in the slot when the sleeve may be rotated to bring the screw into such offset position of the slot and out of functional contact with the reel. This may be desirable when the reel is removed for some purpose.
A standard I4 (Figure 1) is attached to the far end of the casting 3. The upper end of this standard is in the form of a bifurcated bearing I4a (Figure 2) in which a shaft I5 is journalled. A small pinion I6 is secured upon said shaft in the bifurcation of said bearing for operating said shaft as will later more fully appear. A collar I1 is secured upon the shaft and a coil spring I8 surrounds said shaft between said collar and bearing I4a. One end of this spring is anchored in the bearing and the other end is anchored in the collar with the result that said spring is wound up orvputv under tension when the shaft rotates clockwise as viewed in Fig. 1.
-A tensioning device I9 (Figures 1 and 2) that bears against the tying element which, in the present instance, is shown as a ribbon on the reel 1, is loosely mounted upon the shaft i5. The free end of the ribbon tensioning device is bifurcated and the arms I9a thereof are journalled upon'the shaft I5. A coil spring 20 which surrounds the outer end portion of the shaft I5 has one end anchored to a collar 2| secured upon said shaft and the other end engaging the tensioning device I9 for yieldingly pressing said device against the ribbon. Secured upon the shaft l5 between the arms Illa of the tensioning device, there is a curved ribbon guide arm 22 provided upon its upper edge with suitable keepers 23, 24, 25, 26, 21 and 28 for retaining the ribbon which is threaded through these keepers as it passes from the reel. The end of the ribbon projecting from the end of the guide arm 22 is held by one of the clamping blades 29 (Figures 5 and 10) of a rotatable clamping device mounted upon a shaft 30 journalled in the walls 3| and 32 of a casting 33 attached to the castings I and 2. A clamping spring 34 is attached to the wall 32 and has an outwardly offset portion 34a overlapping the circular path of the blades 29. The ribbon may be initially attached to one of the blades 29A in any suitable manner, and after a package has been wrapped and the ribbon has been severed by a shearing element 35 secured upon the shaft 30 upon the opposite side of the wall 32 thru rotation of the shaft, the end of the ribbon will again be automatically clamped as will later more fully appear. It might be mentioned that the shearing element 35 is a counter part of the rotatable clamping device and has four cutting blades that register with the clamping blades 29. These cutting blades cooperate with a .shoulder 36 upon the wall 32 under which the ribbon passes.
In order to clearly understand the operation of the clamping blades and shearing element it will be necessary to describe the manner of tying the ribbon around a package. In referring to Figure 1, it will be noted that the ribbon extends from the reel to the arm or neck 22, over such arm and down thru the slot 5 in the table and to the clamping device. In the slot there is a bridging member 31 (Figure 13) which limits the inward movement of the ribbon in the slot and which is secured upon a slide 38 upon the bottom of the table. This slide has a plurality of slots 39 thru which screws 40 pass that are secured in the table whereby the slide is slidably mounted. A coil spring 4| anchored to the slide and to the table tends to project the bridging member across the slot. A bolt or rod 42 extends downwardly from the slide for operating the same.
'I'he package 43 (Figure 9) to be tied is placed upon the table 4 against the adjustable guides 44 and 45 and beneath the downwardly inclined portion of the ribbon 6 between the table and the end of the arm 22 when the same is in the position shown in Figure 1. When thepaekage is pushed back against the guide or stop member 44, the ribbon will of course be unwound from the reel. When the package has been positioned upon the table as just described and the machine put in operation, the arm 22 will swing downwardly into the position that is shown in Figure 9 and the ribbon 6 will be tightly drawn around the package. In this position of the parts, it will be noted that the portion of the ribbon from the clamping device to the stop 31 is located under the shoulder 36 while the portion between the front end of the package and the end of the arm is also located beneath the shoulder 36 just slight- 1y below the rst mentioned portion. In this position of the parts, a metal clamp is applied to the three portions of the ribbon below the package, namely the two portions just mentioned and the portion of the ribbon above the table as will later appear.
'I'he metal clamp for tying the ribbon is formed in the machine. To` this end there is provided a reel 46 (Figures 1, 3 and '1) for containing a roll of metal in the form of a band. From the reel 46, the metal band passes around a guide sleeve (not shown) journalled upon a bolt 41 passing thru a guide support 48 secured in the casting 3. The guide support 48 carries a pressure roll 49 that cooperates with a feed roll 50 journalled upon a stub shaft 5| extending from and supported by the casting 3. This feed roll 50 has a hub provided with ratchet teeth 52shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. A pawl 53 mounted upon a lever 54 engages said teeth for rotating said feed roller. The pawl lever -54 is pivoted intermediate its ends to the casting 3 as indicated at 55 and the power arm of this lever is provided with a roller 56 in engagement with a cam 51 mounted upon a shaft 58 journalled in said castings and operated as will later be set forth. with a rod 59 having a shoulder end 68. A rod 6| which is secured at its upper end to a support 62 on the casting 3 passes thru an aperture in the shouldered end of the rod 59. A coil spring 63 surrounds the rod 6| between the support 62 and the rod 59 for exerting a yielding force upon the rod 59 and roller 49. A nut 64 upon the lower end of rod 6| engages the arms 59 and may be used to disengage the first rollers for loading the metal band.
The metal band passes between the rollers 49 and 50 and is fed by the roller 58 between cutting die block 65a and guide block 65h in a die box 65 supported by the casting 3. Within the die box there is a stationary male forming die member 66 having an inner reduced rectangular portion 61. Cooperating with the male die there is a moveable female die member 68 having a recess 69 for receiving said rectangular portion 61, a shoe 68a acting as a stop for the metal band, and a cutting edge 68h adjacent block 65a for severing the metal band. A plunger 10 is slidably mounted in the die member 68 and is provided at one end with a head 1| and at the other end with a head 12 located in an enlarged bore 13 in the female die member. Acoil spring 14 located in the bore bears against the head 12 at one end and against a screw plug 14a at the other end. A roller 15 is journalled in the end of die member 68 and adapted to be actuated by the cam 51 for male die member is actuated by the said cam, cutting edge 68h severs the metal band against cutting edge 65e on the upper inner edge of block 65a and a channel like clamp is formedv by recess 69 over rectangular portion 61, the plunger 10 being depressed during the movement. When the cam 51 disengages the roller 15, the spring 14 will project the plunger for ejecting the clamp from the recess in the female die and holding it on the rectangular portion 61 of the male die until ejected.
Mechanism has been provided for ejecting the formed clamp from the die box. This mechanism is shown in Figure 3, and consists of a bell crank lever 16 pivoted at its apex to a support 11 extending from the casting 3, and provided upon its power arm with a roller 18 adapted to be actuated by the cam 51. A slide 19 has a lost motion connection with said lever and this slide normally extends a distance into the die box and when it is actuated it will project the formed clamp from the die box. A leaf spring is fastened to the support 11 and engages a pin 8| upon said lever for retracting the slide 19 after each actuation thereof. The slide 19 is preferably supported beyond thedie box in a guide Way formed by a pair of members 82 and 83 (Figure 1). Upon the inner side of the die box, there is a discharge guide way 84 for the clamps. guide way is formed by a pair of parallel members 85 and 86 attached to the inner wall of the die box.`
A number of formed clamps are always'in this guide way, the slide 19 moving the entire rowof i clamps, so that the forward clamp will be projected between a pair of movable jaw members 81 and 88 (Figures 11 and 12). These jaw members have spaced teeth 88a that interflt when the jaw members are moved together. Coil springs 89 between the jaw members normally tend to separate the same. This elbow lever is adapted to be elevated until arrested y by an adjustable stop 98 threaded in a lug 99 on the casting 3. When the elbow shaped lever has been thuswise elevated, the clamping jaws will be in position to apply the clamp to the ribbon. During this movement of the jaw members, a curved leaf spring attached to the hub of l'the elbow shaped lever will guide the different portionsv of the ribbon into the clamp |0| carried by the jaw members as shown in Figure 6. In addition a pair of sloping slide fingers |02 slidably mounted upon the bottom of the table are adapted for pressing the upper part of the ribbon into the clamp.
The slide fingers |02 are best shown in Figures 8 and 13, and it will be noted thatthey are attached to the edges of a slide plate |03 which is provided with a pair of slots |04 thru which screws I 05 extend that are threaded in said table. With reference to Figure 8, it will be noted that these fingers have upwardly offset portions |02a which extend in suitable slots in the table and these offset portions have downwardly sloping ends |02b which are adapted to engage the ribbon and move it downwardly when the slide is actuated.
It will be noted that a suitable opening |06 hasl been provided in the table for this purpose.
The slide |03 is normally held in its inoperative position by a spring |01 anchored at one end to the slide and at the other end to the table. The slide |03 is connected to an actuating member |08 which is slidably mounted upon the bottom of the table by a pin |09 and slot I|0 arrangement. A cross member I connects the actuating member with the slide |03. The actuating member |08 has a pendant end I2 which lies in the path of a screw ||3 (Figure 8) upon the hub of the elbow shaped lever 96 with the result that when such lever has been substantially elevated, the screw I|3 will strike the pendant portion ||2 and slide the actuating member |08 and the slide |03 with its fingersv for depressing the ribbon into the clamp.
When the ribbon hask been guided and depressed into the metal clamp as just described, a lever ||4 (Figure 11) will be actuated for engaging the bottom of the camv 94 and elevating the same for operating the levers 95 and partially closing the jaw members 81 and 88 for clamping the ymetal kclamp upon'the three part `lower overlapping strands of the ribbon. At the same time, the clamping blades 29vwill rotate and one blade thereof will engage the portion of the* ribbon extending from the arm 22 to the left of the shearing element as viewed in Figures 9 'and 10 and move under clamping spring 34 and` cause vattached to the casting I.

shaft of this motor carries a pinion ||6 (Figure 3) which meshes with an idler gear I1 journalled upon a shaft I|8 supported upon a bracket II9 The gear |I1 has a pinion secured thereto which drives a large gear wheel |2| journalled upon a stub shaft |22 journalled in aI bearing upon the casting I. The gear |2| has a. pinion |23 secured thereto which drives a large gear wheel |24 on the main driving shaft 58 which is journalled in the castings I, 2 and 3. v
The first mechanism on shaft 58 that will be described is the mechanism for periodically rotating shaft 30 and-is shown in Figure 4. It will be observed that a cam |25 is secured upon the shaftl 58 and actuates a lever |26 pivoted intermediate its ends to the' casting I as indicated at |21. A link |28 is pivotally connected to the free endof the lever |26, and to a lever |29 journalled upon the shear shaft 30. A pawl |30 is pivotally carried by the lever |29 and engages a ratchet wheel |3| secured upon the shaft 30. `A coil spring |32 surrounds the shaft 30 and bears against an adjustable collar |33 upon said shaft and against'the hub of the clamping device. This spring tends to maintain thev clamping device and shear against the forementioned wall 32.`v A coil spring |34 vconnected to the casting and to the lever |28 maintains said lever in'engagement with the cam |25. The cam |25 has a cam portion |25a that actuates the lever once during each rotation thereof. j
Just to the right of the cam |25,-there -is another cam |35 (Figure 5) upon the shaft 50. This cam actuates a lever |36 having a roller |31 engaging the same. This lever |38 is pivoted upon or attached to the actuated part thereof. The
segment gear |39 meshes with a pinion |40 secured upon the fcrementioned shaft 91 which elevates the clamp holder. A coil spring 91a (Figure 3) surrounds the shaft 90. One end of the spring engages a pin 91h projecting from the casting 2. The other end of the spring is anchored to the hub of the elbow shaped lever or clamp holder. The spring tends `to force the clamp holder downwardly. l
The next operating mechanism on shaft 58 is best shown in Figure 6 and comprises a cam |4| which engages a roller |42 secured intermediate the ends of a lever |43'which is pivoted at its forward end to the casting 2 upon a pivot stud I 44.
The rear end of the lever |43 engages a vertical rack` bar |45 that extends into the bearing |4a on the standard. I4 and rotates the pinion I6 for loweringthe ribbon guide arm 22. Coil spring |46 which rests upon the base of the standard I4 surrounds the rack bar |45 and abuts a collar |41 thereon to cushion and limitthe downward movement of said rack bar.
When said rack bar is elevated by the lever |43, the coil spring I8 on shaft I5 is put under tension with the result that :said spring I8 will rotate said shaft lin a reverse direction for elevating the guide bar 22 when the cam |4| presents a receding portion thereof `to said lever and allows the rack bar to descend.-
" Adjacent the cam |4I, lthere is an arm |48 rigidslide 16. It will of course be understood that a ly secured upon the shaft 58. A roller |48 is mounted upon the end f the arm |48.v The arm |48 rotates with the shaft 58 in an anti-clockwise direction as viewed in Figure 6. When the elbow shaped lever 96 that is secured upon the shaft 81 has been elevated and the ribbon has been guided into the metal clamp, the said arm |48 will have rotated into position to engage the surface |50 (Figures 6 and 8) of a triangular shaped cam pivotally mounted upon the elbow shaped lever 96 as indicated at |52. The oppo- 'site face of the cam engages the aforementioned lever ||4 which, it will be noted, is also pivoted upon the clamp or elbow shaped lever as indicated at |53.
The said arm |48 will eventually rotate past the triangular cam and move upwardly and engage the peg 42 and the slide 38 for retracting the slot bridging element 31 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 13 for releasing the tied ribbon which is formed with a loop through which such bridging 'element extends.
In its inoperative position, the parts of rthe machine are in the positions shown in Figure 1 with ythe ribbon 8 anchored by a blade 28 of the rotatable clamping device and a package on the table. If the motor is now started, the shaft 58 with its cams will be rotated and the rack bar |45 will be elevated rst for causing the arm 22 to rotate downwardly into the position shown in Figure 9 for tying the ribbon tightly around the package. At this point in the operation, the cam |35 will have rotated into position for actuating the gear segment |89 for rotating the shaft 81 and elevating the clamping jaws which have been supplied with a metal clamp in the meantime by the metal clamp is also formed during this interval as previously set forth. When the jaws have been elevated the parts of the ribbon will be guided into the clamp by the spring |00 and the slide fingers |02, and at this point the arm |48 will have rotated into position to actuate the triangular cam |5| yfor actuating lever |4| for raising the cam 84, thereby' separating the lower portions of the levers and closing the jaws for clamping the metal clamp upon the ribbon. When the arm |48 rotates past the cam |5|, the springs 89 willl expand the jaws and return the parts to their original position. At about this time, the cam |25 will rotate into position for imparting a partial rotation to shaft 30 through the aforedescribed ratchet mechanism for rotating the shearing element and severing the ribbon. At the same time, the ribbon clamp is rotated for clamping the end of the ribbon as previously explained. During this period, the arm |48 will have rotated into position to actuate the slide 38 for causing the bridging element 81 to release the ribbon or tape. As the motor continues to rotate and the different cams rotate to inoperative positions, the different springs will return the guide arm and the jaw lever to original positions, and at the end of a revolution of the drive shaft 58, an automatic clutch will be thrown out for stopping the rotation of the shaft 58. This automatic clutch has not been shown as such clutches or 1. In a packaging machine, a package supporting table having a slot, a slidable bridging element extending acrosssaidslotextending inwardly from one margin, a ribbon reel supported above said table, a curved ribbon guide arm pivoted above said table, means on said guide arm for retaining the ribbon thereon for its entire length, said ribbon adapted for extension through said slot, means for anchoring the end of said ribbon projecting from said arm, means for rotating said arm to bring a portion thereof below said table for wrapping the ribbon around the package, a clamp holder, means for moving the clamp holder adjacent the ribbon, means for forcing the ribbon into said clamp holder, means for' actuating the clamp holder after it has received said ribbon, and means for severing said ribbon and clamping Vthe end projecting from said arm beneath said table.
2. In a package tying machine, a swingable lever, clamping mechanism thereon, a pair of levers for actuating said clamping mechanism, a
cam for engaging said levers, a cam actuating lever pivoted upon the first mentioned lever and means for actuating said cam actuating lever.
3. In a package tying machine, a package supporting table, a standard'above said table, a ribbon reel supported upon said standard, a second standard above said table, a ribbon guide arm mounted upon said second standard, and tension means responsive to the movement of said guide arnli for frictionally engaging the ribbon on said ree 4. In a package tying machine, the combination with means for wrapping a tying element around the package, of a metal clamp holder, means for supplying a metal clamp to said holder, means for elevating said holder for receiving the tying element, a pair of bevelled slides, means for mounting said slides adjacent the tying element and'means for operating said slides for guiding and forcing said tying element into said clamp.
5. In a packaging machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from a margin thereof, a tying element reel, a guide arm for the tying element pivoted above said table and movable into position beneath said table with said tying element extending through said slot, means movable to bridge said slot for periodically limiting the inward movement `of said tying element therein, means for anchoring the end of said tying element projecting beyond said arm, a clamp holder, means for moving said clamp holder adjacent the tying element, means for forcing the tying element into said clamp holder and means for actuating said clamp holder after receiving said tying element to secure a clamp on saidtying element.
6. In a packaging machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from a margin thereof, a tying element reel, a guide arm for the tying element pivoted above said table and `movable into position beneath said table with said tying element extending through said slot, means movable to bridge said slot for periodically limiting theA `inward movement of said tying element therein, means for anchoring the end of said tying element projecting beyond said arm, a clamp holder, means for moving said clamp holder adjacent the tying element, means for forcing the tying element into' said clamp holder, means for actuating said clamp holder after receiving said tying element to secure a clamp on said tying element 'and means for severing said tying element and again anchoring the severed end thereof pro- .iecting from said arm beneath said table.

In a package tying machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin thereof, a reel for carrying a tying element, means mounted below said table for anchoring an end of said tying element, a guide arm for said tying element pivotally mounted on said table and movable in the plane of said slot from a position with its end above said table to a position with its end below said table, a
member slidable transversely 'of said slot to limit the movement of said tying element inwardly of said slot. means for moving said guide arm to wrap said tying element about a package, a reel for metallic ribbon, means for forming clamps from said ribbon, means for receiving said formed clamps and applying said clamps to said tying element, means for severing said tying element and again anchoring a fresh end thereof and means operative to withdraw said slidable member from across said slot to permit the removal of the tied package.
8. In a package tying machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin thereof, a reel for carrying a tying element, means associated with said reel for tensioning the tying element during its unwinding therefrom, means mounted below said table for anchoring an end of said tying element, a guide arm for said tying element pivotally mounted on said table and movable in the plane of said slot from a position with its end above said table to a position with its end below said table, a member slidable transversely of said slot to limit the movement of said tying element inwardly of said slot, means for moving said guide arm to wrap said tying element about a package, a reel for metallic ribbon, means for forming clamps from said ribbon, means for receiving said formed clamps and applying said clamps to three strands of said tying element including two strands forming a loop about said slidable ele. ment, means for severing said tying element and again anchoring a fresh end thereof and means operative to withdraw said slidable member from across said slot to permit the removal of the tied package.

In a package tying machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from onemargin thereof, a reel for carrying a tying element, means mounted below said table receiving said formed clamps and applying said` clamps to said tying element, means forv severing said tying element and 'again anchoring a fresh end thereof and means operative to removezsaidA member from across said slot to .permit the ref.
moval of the tied package.

In a package tyingmachine, a package sup-v porting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin thereof, a reel for carrying a tying element, means mounted below said tablev for anchoring an`end of said tying element, a guide arm for said tying element pivotally mounted on said table and movable in the plane of said slot from a position with its end above said table to a. position with its end below said table, a member slidable transversely of said slot to limit the movement of said tying element inwardly of said slot, means for moving said guidearm to wrap said tyingelement about a package, a reel for metallicribbon, means for forming clamps from said ribbon, means for receiving said formed clamps and applying said clamps to said tying element, means for severing said tying element and again anchoring a fresh end thereof, means operative to withdraw said slidable member from across said slot to permit the removal of the tied package, a main drive shaft and means including cams for operating said various aforementioned means and slidable member in synchronism.

In a4 package tying' machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin thereof, a 'reel for holding a tying element, a guide arm pivotally mounted on said table and movable in the plane of said slot, a tensioning device for. keeping said tying element under tension, means beneath said table for anchoring an end of said tying element with n. strand of said tying element passing through said slot and a member movable to extend across said slot to limit the 4inward movement of said tying element.

In a'package tying machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin thereof, la reel for holding a tying element, alguide 'arm pivotally mounted on'said table and movable in the plane of said slot, a tensioning vdevice for keeping said tying element under tension, means beneath said tabley vfor anchoring an endkof said tying element with a strand of said tyingelementpassing through said slot, a member movable to extend across said slot to limit the inward movement of said tyingelement, means for severing'said tying element and means for again anchoring an end thereof.

In a package tying machine, a swingable lever, a clamping mechanism carried thereby inv cluding jaw members having clamp engaging teeth, a pair of levers for actuating said jaw members, a cam for engaging said levers, a cam actuating lever pivoted upon said flrst mentioned lever and means for actuating said cam actuating lever.

In a package tying machine, a swingable lever, a clamping mechanism carried thereby including jaw members having clamp engaging teeth, springs tending to separate said teeth, a pair of levers for actuating said jaw members against the action of said springs, a cam for engaging said levers, a cam actuating lever pivoted upon said rst mentioned lever and means for actuating said cam actuating lever.

In a package tying machine, a package supporting table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin, a ribbon reel supported above said table, a curved arm pivoted above said table and having keepers thereon for receiving the ribbon from said reel, said ribbon being adapted to extend beyond said arm and through said slot, a rotatable clamp below said table for anchoring the free end of said ribbon, means for swinging said arm downwardly to bring the end thereof beneath the table for wrapping said ribbon around a package and for bringing a portion of said ribbon in underlapping relation with the anchored end portion to provide overlapping portions, means for applying a clamp to the overlapping portions of said ribbon, a cutter movable with said rotatable clamp and means for rotating said clamp for shearing the lower two overlapping portions of said ribbon and clamping the sheared end extending from said arm.

In an automatic machine for tying a package, a table havinga slot extending inwardly from one margin, a ribbon reel above the table, a curved ribbon guide arm pivoted above .the table and having means 'for receiving and guiding the ribbon, said ribbon being adapted to extend beyond the end of said arm and through said' slot, means including a rotatable clamp for anchoring the end of said ribbon beneath the table; means for swinging said arm downwardly for bringing the end thereof beneath the table and beyond said clamp to underlap a portion of said ribbon and to wrap the same around the package, means for applying a clamp to the overlapping portions of said ribbon, a shearing means associated with said rotatable clamp, and
means for operating said rotatable clamp and said shearing means for shearing the two lower strands of said ribbon and anchoring the sheared end projecting from said arm.

In a package wrapping machine, a table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin, a reel'for holding a tying element mounted upon the table, a curved guide arm pivoted upon the table and having means for receiving and guiding the tying element, said tying element being adapted to extend over the end of said arm and through said slot, a rotatable clamping member beneath said table, means cooperating with said clamping member for clamping the end of said tying, element, a shearing mechanism including a shearing element rotatable with said clamping member and means for rotating said clamping member and shearing element for shearing said tying element and reclamping the sheared end between said clamping member and said cooperating means.

In a package tying machine, a table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin, a reel for holding a tying element mounted upon said table, a curved guide arm pivotaliy mounted upon said table and having means for receiving and guiding said tying element, said tying element being adapted to extend over the end of said arm and through said slot, clamping means beneath the bottom of the table for anchoring` the end of said tying element, means for lowering said arm for wrapping the tying element around a package and for moving the end of said arm beyond said clamping means for causing the tying element extending therefrom to underlap the end portion of said tying element and the portion of the tying element upon the bottom of the package, means for applying `a clamp to the three overlapping portions of said tying element and means for shearing the two lower overlapping portions of said tying element.v

In a package tying machine, a table having'a slot extending inwardly from one margin. a reel for a tying element mounted upon said table, a curved arm pivoted upon the table and having means for receiving and guiding said tyingy element, said tying element being adapted for extending beyond the end of said arm and through said slot. a shaft mounted beneath said table, a clamping member comprising spaced radially extending blades secured upon said shaft, an abutment adapted for cooperation with one of said blades for clamping the end of the tying element, a cutting element secured upon said shaft, means for lowering said arm for wrapping the tying element around a package and positioning the portion adjacent thereto in underlapping relation with the clamped end portion and 'the portion at the bottom of the package, means for applying a clamp to said three portions and means for rotating said shaft for shearing the two lower portions of said tying element and clamping the sheared end extending from said arm.

In a package tying machine, a rotatable shaft, a clamping member having radially extending blades secured upon said shaft, an abutment cooperating with said blades for clamping the end of a tying element. a cutter secured upon said Vshaft adjacent said clamping member, and means for periodically rotating said shaft for severing the tying element and clamping the end against said abutment.
23. In a package tying machine, a table having a slot extending inwardly from one margin,
y a reel for a tying element mounted upon said table, a curved arm pivoted upon the table, means upon said arm for retaining and guiding the tying element lengthwise thereof, said tying element being adaptedto extend over the end of said arm and through said slot and a distance rearwardly under the table, means for anchoring the end of said tying element beneath said table, means for lowering said arm for wrapping the tying element around a package positioned upon the table against said tying element and for bringing the end of said arm beyond said clamping'l means for causing portions of said tying element to overlap, a metal clamp holding device, means for supplying a metal clamp to v said device, means for moving said device to engage said metal clamp with the overlapping portions of said tying element, means for crimping said metal clamp upon said overlapping portions, and means for shearing the two lower4 overlapping portions of said tying element.

In a package tyingmachine, a tableV having a slot extending inwardly from one margin, an actuatable bridging element extending across said slot, a reel for a tying element mounted upon said'table, a curved arm pivoted upon said table and having means for receiving and guiding said tyingelement, said tying element being adapted to extend from the end of said arm and through said slot in front of said bridging element, means for clamping the end of said tying element beneath said table rearwardly of said bridging element, the tying element above said table being adapted to extend under a package and in registry with said slot and over the rear end and top thereof when said arm is in elevated position, means for lowering said arm to wrap the tying element over said package, said arm being lowered to bring the end thereof beyond said clamping means for causing the tying element adjacent the end thereof Ato underlap the portion of the tying element extending from' said clamping means and the portion of the' ty' ing element at the bottom of said package, means for applying a clamp to the three portions of said tying element and means for shearing the two lower portions thereof.

In a package tying machine, means for wrapping atying-element around a package with one end portion extended from the package and in underlapping relation with the portion of the tying element at the bottom ofthe package, said means including a movable arm adapted for'positioning a portion of the tying element in underlapping relation with the extended end said tying element extending upwardly through chored end, means for clamping the `portions of portion, means for applying a clamp to thethree portions of said tying element andmeans for shearing the two remote portions.
