The yielding connection preferably comprises semi-circular sockets l5 spaced along the front ends of the side arms 10 and a rounded stud I6 mounted in each extension to seat in said sockets and urged by a spring 11 to seat therein.

The handle bars comprise a substantially U- shaped frame of metal including a pair of op- K posed pusher arms IB connected at one end by a transverse bar l9 and a wooden hand grip bar '20 suitably secured to the transverse bar [9. The pusher bars I8 are secured to the side bars 5 of the sled and to the side arms Ill of the section I to incline upwardly and rearwardly and by means of the following.

The free ends of said bars l8 are bifurcated, as indicated at 2l to straddle the side bars 5 and extend below the same. Bolts 22 passing through the extending portions of the bifurcations 2| and having wing nuts 23 threaded thereon detachably secure the bifurcated ends of the pusher bars l8 to the side bars 5. Intermediate their ends the pusher bars l8 are detachably secured to the inner faces of the side arms ID by plates 24 clamped against the outer sides of the bars It! by bolts 25 passing through said. bars and plates and wing nuts 28 on said bolts.

In Figure 6 the extensions 21 have been shown as provided with additional means for securing them to the side bars 28 of the sled and having the form of latches 29 pivotally mounted as at 30 to swing over the outside edges of the side bars 28. The latches 29 are each provided with a resilient manipulating arm 3| having a tooth 32 thereon adapted to seat in a notch 33 in the related extension 21 with a snap action to hold the latch in effective position.

In Figure 8 the ends of the extensions 34 have been shown as connected together by a toggle lock comprising a pair of toggle links 35 pivoted to said extensions as at 36 and to each other as at 31 and operative toward the floor boards 33 of the sled into a dead center position to spread the extensions 34' against the side bars 38 of the sled. The toggle links may be disposed to operate parallel with the floor boards either forwardly or rearwardly if desired.

As shown in Figure 9 the side arms designated 39 and 40, in this instance, may be provided with bolt holes 4!, respectively, for securing the same together by bolts not shown.

The modifications disclosed relate to the means for securing the extension arms of the guard to the side bars of the sled only, but it is to be understood that right is herein reserved to modifications of the invention in other respects falling within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

What I claim is:

1. A guard for attachment to a sled having front and rear cross bars and side bars extending beyond said cross bars said guard comprising, an upright back rest and. a pair of arm rests extending forwardly from said back rest upon opposite sides of said sled, the back rest being provided at its lower edge with attaching means telescoping over the rear ends of said side bars and slidable thereon, the arm rests being resilient for flexing inwardly and reaction outwardly and having attaching means at their front ends adapted to be interlocked with said side bars by such reaction of said arms, said arm rests comprising telescopic interlocking sections manipulative to lengthen and shorten the arm rests whereby said back rest attaching means and said arm attaching means maybe located against opposite edges of the rear and front cross bars,

In a guard for attachment to a sled having front and rear cross bars and side bars extending beyond said cross bars said guard comprising, a back rest provided at its lower edge with looped extensions adapted to slide over the rear ends of said side bars, and a pair of arm rests extending forwardly from said back rest upon opposite sides of the sled, respectively, said arm rests having bifurcated front ends extending laterally and outwardly from said ends for positioning sidewise over said side bars, said arms being resilient for flexing inwardly to facilitate positioning of said bifurcated ends relative to said side bars and reactive outwardly to clamp said bifurcated ends against said bar, and said arms comprising telescopic sections manipulative to vary the distance between .said looped extensions and said bifurcated ends whereby said extensions and ends may be located against the rear and front cross bars, respectively, and latching devices for holding said telescopic sections against relative movement.

4. A guard for attachment to a sled comprising, a back rest having a pair of looped extensions at its lower edge upon opposite sides of said rest, respectively, and a pair of arm rests extending from opposite side edges thereof at an angle thereto and integral with said back rest,

a pair of extensions telescopically mounted on the front bifurcated ends disposed intermediate the back rest and the extensions.
