Description
111; 9 mm. H. H. PERRATON MEDICAMENT APPLICATOR Filed April 11, 1932 Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claims.
It is an object of the invention to provide a medicament applicator of simple construction especially adapted for use in applying a medicament to the exterior os uteri.
Other objects are to provide such an instrument of new and improved construction which is easy to operate and convenient for home use, which places a definite and correct quantity of medicament on the exact area to be treated, which has smooth exterior surfaces so as to avoid injury to tissue, and which has a bowl portion of transparent material so that the patient can see if it has been cleaned thoroughly and also when it has been completely filled with medicament before being used.
Further objects will become readily apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged exterior view of a preferred form of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line 2-4 of Hg. 1.
Pig. 3 is a transverse section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the form illustrated in the drawing, the invention comprises a tubular body member I of transparent glass, having a slender stem portion and an enlarged cylindrical bowl portion 1. The bowl 'I is provided with a smooth exterior surface and preferably has the side wall thereof curved inwardly at its outer end at I so as to provide a reduced opening 8' to facilitate insertion and avoid injuring the tissues. At its other end the body member has means in the form of a laterally extending annular flange 9 to facilitate withdrawal and manipulation of the instrument.
Slidably mounted in the stem portion 8 is a rod or member II which at one end extends into the bowl portion 1 of the body member, and at its other end projects out of the stem portion I. In thepreferred form of the invention the rod II is provided with a pair of longitudinally spaced annularcollars II and I! in between which an annulus?! of rubber or other suitable material is positioned. This annulus, together with the end of the rod forms a piston or plunger which is slidably mounted in the bowl I and is adapted to eject an application of are-inserted medicament therefrom when the rod II is actuated. At its other end the rod II is preferably flanged as at it so as to facilitate the actuation of the plunger byauser.
In operation it is merely necessary for a pa- (Cl. 12826l) tient to withdraw the plunger to the position shown in Fig. 2 and place the medicament or Jell into the bowl portion I through the opening 8". The body member is theninserted by the patient and the application of medicament expelled by pressing on the end of the rod. The flange I! may be constructed to fit somewhat snugly into the opening 8 to insure a complete expulsion of the medicament. The bowl I is preferably made of a transparent material so that the patient may observe if it is thoroughly clean before filling, and also whether it has been filled completely before insertion, the plunger being water tight so as to insure easy cleaning by suction.
The bowl is made of such a size that when completely filled it will contain the correct amount of medicament for a proper application to the exact area to be treated. By turning in the side wall of the bowl at its open end the medicament is effectively held in the bowl until the instrument has been inserted and is in proper position for the ejection of the contents of the bowl.
While I have shown in the drawing and have herein described in detail the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the speciflc form disclosed,'but aim to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
A medicament applicator for internal use comprising a tubular body member having a slender stem portion and an enlarged cylindrical bowl portion at one end thereof, said bowl portion having a smooth exterior surface and having the side walls thereof curved rapidly inwardly at its outer end to form a rounded end to facilitate insertion and avoid injury and an internal flange to provide a reduced opening to retain medicament in the bowl portion, a rod extending through the stem portion and into the bowl portion, longitudinally spacedcollars on the end of the rod in said bowl portion, and an annular sealing member on said end intermediate said collar forming a piston operable by said rod to eject medicament, one of said collars being at the extreme forward end of said rod and receivable within the opening to extend thereinto when the piston is at its extreme forward position, thereby to assure a complete discharge of a measured quantity of medicament.
