OPHTHALMIC MOUNTING4 Filed June 4, 1932 wvor 'Ca/WZ E. H. buia/nder' Patented Aug. 18, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OPHTHALMIC MOUNTING Y Carl E. H. Colliander, Providence, R. I., assgnor to Lorgnettes, Inc., Providence, R. I., a corporation of Rhode Island 1 is a front elevation of an ophthalmic mount-- ing constructed according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention; FigQZ is a hori zontal section, upon a larger scale, taken upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downward in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 isa similar, ver-- tical section at one end of the bridge, the section being taken upon the line 3--3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 4 is avsectionfsimilar to Fig. 3, near the opposite' end of the bridge, the section being -upon a smaller scale than in Fig. 3, showing parts de-4 tached, the bridge being shown partly-in elevation; Fig. 5 is airagmentary view of a modification; Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken upon the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, looking downward in the ldirection of the arrows, Ythe parts being shown detached; and Fig.l '7 is a similar View of a further modiiication. Y
The ophthalmic mounting of the present invention comprises, in its preferred embodiment, illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, two substantially cir--V cular, metal, lens-holding rims 1.2 and 4, connected together by a metal bridge and having guards 38. The rims 2 and 4 are respectively provided with pockets v8 and I0, open at `the top I2. In the illustrated embodiment of Figs. 1 to 4, the pockets 8 and I8 are closed at the bottom I4 and at the sides, Yas shown. The pockets 8 and I0 taper downward'from the top I2 toward the bottom I4. The inner wall 5 oi the pocket 8 is a continuation of the outer wall 'I of the rim 2, as shown in Fig. 4, and the inner wall 9 of the pocket I0 is similarly a continuation of the outer wall II of the rim 4, as shown in Fig. 3. y
The ophthalmic mounting of the present invention is of the type that is supported upon the face by the guards 38, that rest upon the sides of the nose, in cooperation with temples 6. The bridge is therefore provided with. an .intermediate, raised portion I6, and two terminalforend portions I8 and `20 depending Y,from Ythe raised portion I8. The llower extremities .of the end. portions I8. and 28 taper downward, as illustrated at 22 and 24, to correspond to the downward taper of the pockets 8 and I0. .These lower extremities 22 and 24 are thus adapted to t tightly in their corresponding pockets VIl and I8, with the end portions .I8 and 20, and particularly their lower parts or extremities 22 and 24, conforming substantially to the .shapes of the respective rims.2 and 4. .In the embodiment of the inventionclearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, the portions IB and 20contact throughout with respective outer .surfaces .1 and II of the rims 2-andi4.
Each bridge end .portion i8 and 20 is de, tachably held in place in its corresponding pocket 8 and I0 by a screw 26 that extends through an opening 28 in the outer wall of the pocket, Ythrough an opening 30 in the extremity of the corresponding Vbridge end portions .I8`and 29, and into an opening .32 in the inner wall of the corresponding pocket. To detach the bridge, all that is necessary is to remove the screw 26. The extremities 22 and 24 of the bridge may thenbe freely moved upward, through the open tops I2 of the pockets 8 and I0, and the .bridge replaced by another bridge of different shape, size or style.
vTheresulting bridge structure conforms in all respects to, `and fits snugly against, the outer surfaces 'I and Il of the rims, the end portions I8 Aand 28 of the bridge are detachable from the rims 2 and 4, and yet the Aparts are nevertlrie-Y less securely held together in assembled relation.
According to the modification of Figs. 5 and 6, thepocket is of different nature, and consists of an open-sided recess 34 in a block 36 that is integrally secured, as by soldering, to the rim. The bridge is provided with a projection .38 seated in its recess, and a at part 40 that contacts with a flat part 42 of the block, and the parts are held together by a screw 44. The screw may extend either from the side, as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, or from any other direction, as the rear, .illustrated in Fig. 7. Adjustments for pupillary distance may be effected in the portion I6 of the bridge, but if too drastic an adjustment is required, vall that is necessary is to replace the bridge by another. The optician is not, therefore, required to .keep .on hand more than a minimum number 'of .bridges and rims, Y
bridge, .with any style or size of rim to produce a mounting suitable to the requirements of any patient. Similarly, if any part, whether lens rimV or bridge, becomes broken or unstylish, it may readily be replaced by another.
It will be understood that the invention may Ybe further modified by persons skilled in the art,
and such modifications are considered to be within the spirit :and scope of the invention as defined in theap'pended'claims.
