The present invention relates to ophthalmic mountings-and more particularly to mountings of the type in which non-metal lens rims are connected together by a metal bridge and are provided with metal end pieces.
When either of the non-metal of such a mounting, as at present constructed, becomes broken, as frequently happens during heating and stretching to mount the lenses in the rims, it becomes necessary to discard the whole mounting, which thus becomes a total loss. If one of the rims, furthermore, becomes damaged, or if the style changes from one type or shape of rim or bridge or end piece to another, the vwhole mounting must be thrown away.
An object of the present invention is accordingly to provide a new and improved mounting of the above-described character in which the end pieces and the bridge are detach-ably secured to the rims. The damaged or unstylish part may then be readily replaced by a like new part. The optician is, furthermore, permitted to keep a smaller stock on hand, since all that he needs to have is an assortment of be connected to any desired type of rims. Ac-
cording to the preferred embodiment of the invention that is illustrated and described herein, the bridge may readily be unscrewed from the rims and another bridge replaced; and metal pieces are detachably superposed over the nonmetal end pieces of the rim.
Other objects of the invention will be made clear in the course of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and will be defined in the accompanyingclaims.

The ophthalmic mounting of the present invention comprises, in its preferred embodiment, illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, two non-metal, lensholding 2 and'A each having a non-metal end piece I, connected together by a metal bridge and having temples 6. Theopening 10 is preferably closed at M, the lug 24 merely fitting therein. The opening 8, however, is shown as extending transversely through the rim, from face to face thereof, in 'order that a screw 25 maybe threaded from the rear into an internally threaded opening 28 provided in the lug 22. ,If desired, the screw maybe 25 threaded in from the front, as shown in Fig. 8, in which event the terminal portions i8 and 20 of the bridge will be provided with screw-receiving openings 2-5. ,In that event, an internally threaded metal piece 23 may be set in place between the rim and the guard 3 before the latter is cemented to the former, so that the metal pieces 23 become integrally "secured in place.
The screws 26 cooperate with the lugs 22 and 24 to secure the bridge to the rims. 'If desired, additional securing means may be provided, though found to .be unnecessary,- in practice. One such additional means is illustrated in Figs.'5 and 6 as further, internally threaded lugs 21 at the junction between the raised por- 40 tion 16 and the end portions 18 and 26, and cooperating with screws 29. V A washer 3| may be interposed, as shown in Fig. 6.
The bridge may further be provided at the junctions between the intermediate portion I6 and the end portions I8 and 2G with integral U-shaped portions lfi, also illustrated in Fig. 5, into which fit projections or lugs 48 of the rims 2 and 4. The projections 48 extend out from the peripheriesof the respective rims 2 and 4 in 50 substantially the planes of the respective rims. The neck 50 ofthe U may form a pleasing, metal-front, continuation of the bridge, in the front plane of the bridge, and extending over the projections or' lugs 48, which are. fitted into The end portions I8 and 20 of the 10' the U from the rear. The arms of the U extend rearwardly from the neck 50 substantially at 7 right angles to the said front plane of the bridge.
The metal bridge is thus efiectively secured to the rims, though it is detachable therefrom merely by loosening the screws.
Each bridge portion l8 and 20 maybe further provided, near its extremity, with an additional internally threaded lug 33, more or less like the lug 23, cooperating with a screw 35, like the screw 29, as is also illustrated in Fig. 6.

What is claimed is:
1. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two single-arm end portions depending from the raised portion, two continuo'us, non-metal, lens-holding rims each being integrally provided with a nonmetal guard-the single arms of the. end portions being disposed in front of, and in contactwith the front faces of the respective rims substantially throughout their length from near their junctions with the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends, the lower portions of the arms extending below the upper portions of the guards,=and means for securing the said single arms to the said front faces of the respective rims, the secur ing means being detachable to permit detaching the bridge from the rims. a

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two' end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions having transversely disposed, internally threaded, integral lugs and thebridge'having U'-shaped portions at the junctions between the raised portion and the end portions, two nonmetal lens-holding rims having transversely dis posed openings in which the lugs are received and having also proj ectionsfitting in the U-shaped portiondandscrews threaded in the lugs for securing the bridge to the rims. a

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a one-piece metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending integrally from the raised portion, the integral end portions having openings, two non-metal lens-holding rims having internally screw-threaded metal means fixedly disposed therein, the integral end portions being disposed in front of and in contact with the respective rims substantially throughout their a length from near theirjunctions with the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends with the openings therein disposed opposite to the respective screw-threaded metal means, and screws extending through the openings and into the internally screw-threaded means for securing one of the integral end portions to one of the rims and the other integral end portion to the other rim.
8. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, anon-metal lens-holding rim having an integrally disposed end piece provided with a screw-threaded sleeve, a .U-shaped metal end piece within which the non-metal end piece is received, one side of the U being integrally provided with an internally screw-threaded 'lugextending into the non-metal end piece, a screw threaded into the lug and a'screw threaded in the sleeve, the screws cooperating with the'end pieces to hold theend pieces together for detachably securing the metal end piece to the non-metal end piece.
9. An ophthalmic mounting having, incom bination, a non-metal lens-holding rim having an end piece, a U-shaped metal end piece within which the non-metal end piece is received and having an integral, internally screw-threaded lug extending into the non-metal end piece, and a screw threaded into the lug and cooperating with the non-metal material for detachably securing the metal end piece to the non-metal end piece.
10. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, two non-metal rims each having an end piece and a rearwardly projecting integral guard, a metal bridge for connecting the rims and having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions being superposed over the respective rims in front of the guards, a metal end piece superposed over each non-metal end iece, and means for detachably securing the bridge to the rims and the metal end pieces to the non-metal end pieces.
11. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a bridge member having two integral lugs, a lens-holding rim having two openings one cf which is closed and the other of which extends through the rims, the lugs being received. in the openings, and means disposed in said other opening and cooperating with the lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rim.
12. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a continuous, non-metal, lens-holding rim having an integral projection extending out from the periphery of the rim in substantially the plane of the rim, a metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, there being a U-shaped portion at the junction between the intermediate portion and one of the end portions, the U being constituted of a neck substantially parallel to the said planeand two arms extending from the neck substantially at right angles to the plane, the said rim projection fitting in the U-shaped portion, and means cooperating with the U-shaped portion and the projection for detachably securing the bridge to the rim.
13. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed, integral lugs at least some of which are threaded, two non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front faces toward the rear faces of the rims and in which the lugs are received, and threaded members cooperating with the threaded lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims.
14. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions having transversely disposed lugs extending integrally from the rear of the end portions, two continuous, non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front faces toward the rear faces of the rims, the end portions being disposed in front of and in contact with the respective rims substantially throughout their length from near their junctions with the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends, with the lugs received in the openings when the bridge is mounted in front ofthe rims,and. means interengaging with a plurality of the lugs for securing the end portions to and in front of the respective rims, the last-named means being detachable to permit detaching the bridge from the rims.
15. An ophthalmic mountinghaving, in combination, a bridge member having two transversely disposed lugs extending integrally from the rear thereof, a lens-holding rim having two corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front face toward the rear face of the rim, one of the openings being closed and the other opening extending through the rim, the lugs being received in the openings when the bridge is mounted in front'of the rim, and means disposed in said other opening and coopcrating with the lugs for detachably securing the bridge to and in front of the rim.
16. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed lugs extending integrally from the rear the end portions, at least some of the lugs being threaded, two non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front faces toward the rear faces of the rims and in which the lugs are received when the bridge 'is mounted in front of the rims, and threaded members 00-: operating with the threaded lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims.

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination. a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed, integral, internally threaded lugs, two non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding. trans versely disposed openings in which the lugs are received, andthreaded members threaded in the lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims. a

An ophthalmic mounting having, in com-- bination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed, integral, internally threaded lugs, two non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings in which the lugs are received, screws threaded in the lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims, and spacing means interposed between the heads of a plurality of the screws and the rims.

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed, internally threaded lugs extending integrally from the rear of the end portions, two nonmetal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front faces toward the rear faces of the rims, the end pieces being disposed in front of and in contact with the respective rims throughout their length with the lugs received in the openings when the bridge is mounted in front of the rims, and threaded members threaded in the lugs for detachably securing the end portions to and in front of the respective rims.

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, two non-metal lens holding rims, the end portions being disposed in front of and in contact with rearwardly disposed means for securing the end portions to and in front of the respective rims,
the last-named means being detachable to permit detaching the bridgefrom therims.
21 An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, two non-metal rims each having 'an "end piece, a metal bridge for connecting the rims and having an intermediate raised portion ;a'nd,two single-arm end portions depending from the raised portion, the single arms of the end portions being superposed over the respective rims in front of and in contactlwith the respective rims throughout their length from near their junctions with the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends, a metal end piecesuperposed over each non-metal end piece,
and means for securing the said single arms to and in front'of the respective rims and the metal end pieces to the non-metal end pieces. 7
22. An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions de pending from the raised portion, the end portions having integral, rearwardly extending, in-
ternally threaded lugs, two continuous, nonmetal, lens-holding rims having openings in which the lugs are received, each rim being provided on its rear face with'a rearwardly pro-' jecting, non-metal guard, the end portions be-' ing disposed'in front of and in contact with the front faces of the respective rims substantially throughout their length from near their junctions with the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends, with the lugs received in the openings, the lower extremities of the end' portions extending below the'upper portionsofthe guards, and screws threaded in the lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims, whereby the bridge member may be readily unscrewed from, the rims and another bridge or other rims may be replaced. 7

An ophthalmic mounting having, in combination, a. metal bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions each having a plurality of transversely disposed, integral, internally threaded lugs, and the bridge having U-shaped portions at the junctions between the raised portion and the end portions, two continuous, non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding," transversely. disposed, openings in which the lugs are received, each rim being integrally provided with a non-metal guard and witha projection extending out from the rim in substantially the plane of the rim and fitting in one of the 'U-shaped portions, and threaded members threaded inthe lugs for detachably securing the bridge to the rims.

An ophthalmic mounting having, incombination, a bridge member having an intermediate raised portion and two end portions depending from the raised portion, the end portions having transversely disposed integral'lugs, two continuous, non-metal lens-holding rims having corresponding, transversely disposed openings extending from the front faces toward the rear faces of the rims, each rim being integrally provided with a non-metal guard, the end portions being 'disposed'in front of and in contact with the respective rims substantially throughout their length from near their junctions with: the intermediate raised portion to near their free ends, with the lugs received in the openings, and the lower portions of the arms extending below the upper portions of the guards, and means interengaging with a plurality of the lugs for securing the end portions to and in front of the respective rims, the last-named means being detachable to permit detaching'the bridge from the rims.
