2 Claims. (01. 158-4) This invention relates to improvements in burners for supplying heat to heat absorbing surfaces arranged in a heating chamber elongated on the axis of the burner. The invention provides, particularly, improved control of flame configuration along the axis of the burner through the heating chamber.
The control of flame configuration in heating chambers so arranged is important in several respects, including the maintenance of conditions requisite for high combustion efliciency, the full utilization of the capacity of the heating apparatus and the elimination of maladjustments of the heat absorption by difierent parts of the heating surfaces. In heating apparatus in which petroleum oils are heated to temperatures up- Wards of about 700 F., the control of flame configuration becomes doubly important as the elimination of local overheating is peculiarly essen- The improved burner of the invention is of general application, but it is of special value and application in heating apparatus in which petroleum oils are heated to such temperatures.
With the improved burner of the present invention, the flame configuration along the axis the point at which air for combustion is admitted to the throat and the point at which fuel is injected, and, second, the point of fuel injection. The improved burner of the invention comprises a burner throat communicating with the heating chamber, means for admitting air to the burner throat, means arranged axially within the burner throat for injecting fuel into the heating chamber through the throat at a point between the air admitting means and the heating chamber proper, an annular baffle positioned around the fuel injecting means between the point of fuel injection and the point of air admission and means adapted to hold or permit independent adjustment of the point of fuel injection i. e. the fuel injection nozzle, and the bafile along the axis of the burner. The burner throat is, with advantage, enlarged in section as it approaches the heating chamber, such enlargement cooperating with the controllably positioned bafile and point of fuel injection to afford further control of flame configuration.
The invention will be further described in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate, in some detail, one embodiment of the improved burner of the invention. It will be understood that the, invention is not limited to the particular burner illustrated in the accompanying drawing. In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 illustrates, in elevation and in section, a burner embodying the invention as arranged, in conjunction with heating apparatus in which the heat absorbing surfaces are arranged in a heating chamber elongated on a vertical axis, the burner being arranged for down-draft firing, the heating apparatus other than the 10 burner being illustrated conventionally, in fragmentary section, and Fig. 2 is anlenlarged detail of the fuel injection nozzle of the burner illustrated in Fig. 1.
The heating apparatus illustrated in the drawing comprises a heating chamber 4, elongated on its vertical axis and laterally bounded by a cylindrical wall 5, and a series of tubes or pipes 6, through which the material to be heated is circulated, radially spaced from the axis of the cylinder and adjacent the cylindrical Wall 5. The burner, positioned above the heating chamber 4 and co-axially therewith, communicates with the heating chamber through the roof '7.
The burner illustrated comprises a burner throat communicating with the heating chamber 4, this burner throat including a ring member 8 and a refractory passage 9, connecting the passage through this ring member with the heating chamber, the burner throat enlarging in section as it approaches theheating chamber, an annular opening I!) between the upper end of the ring member 8 and the cover and cover support members l l and I 2, dampers l3 in the form of annular segments arranged about and adapted collectively 35 to cover the opening H), a plurality of rods l4 supporting the dampers l3 and adapted independently to position these dampers, severally, with respect to the annular opening ID, a fuel injection nozzle arranged axially within the burner throat on the end of a supporting tubular member 3 I, an annular baflle 32 positioned around the tubular member 3! and carried by a supporting tubular member 33, a clamp collar 34 supported by the cover member H and adapted to permit adjustment of the baflle 32 along the axis of the burner between the annular opening l0 and the fuel injection nozzle 30, and a clamp collar 35 supported by the tubular member 33 and adapted tion, and, assuming the clamp collar 35 to be released, the tubular member 3| can be moved through the tubular member 33 and the clamp collar '35 along the axis of the burner to be clamped in any chosen position independently of the position of bafile 32. The flame configuration in the heating chamber 4 can thus be closely controlled, by joint but independent regulation of the point of fuel injection along the axis of the burner and the position of the baille 32 between the point of fuel injection and the point at which air is admitted to the burner throat; This control is improved by the provision, as in the burner illustrated, of a burner throat enlarging in section as it approaches the heating chamber.
