This invention relates to that type of machine for making single faced corrugated paper from a corrugated sheet and a surface sheet, in which the adhesive is applied in strips across the surface sheet at spaced intervals corresponding to the distance between successive crowns of the corrugated sheet, and the corrugated sheet and the surface sheet are progressively brought together with the adhesive strips in contact and in registry with the crowns of the corrugations of said corrugated sheet.
The desired registry of the adhesive applying mechanism in respect to the corrugating rollers cannot be secured with certainty when the machine is at rest due to back lash or lost motion in the gear train, which is taken up when the machine is started. Therefore, it has heretofore been necessary in making an adjustment to shut the machine down, make approximate adjustments, restart the machine, note the relative positions of the adhesive strips and the corrugations of the corrugated paper, and then shut down the machine and readjust the adhesive applying mechanism. Thus, a great deal of time has been wasted in effecting the proper adjustments.
One object of the present invention is to provide a mechanism for adjusting the adhesive applying mechanism in respect to the corrugating rollers while the machine is running, so that the strips of adhesive on the surface sheet will come directly opposite to or in registry with the crowns of the corrugated sheet while passing between the smooth surface roller and the corrugating roller.
As a feature of the present invention, I provide a rotatable roller having circumferentially spaced teeth meshing with the teeth of the adhesive applying roller, and also having a driving connection with said adhesive applying roller through the intermeshing teeth. This rotatable roller serves to force any excess of adhesive from between the teeth of the applying roller, and may also serve to transfer adhesive from a suitable source to the teeth of said applying roller.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown for the purpose of illustration, one embodiment of the present invention. In the drawing:

The present invention is illustrated as adapted to a machine designed for the manufacture of single-faced corrugated paper which may constitute the final product, or which may be delivered to another machine or portion of the machine to have an additional liner or facing sheet adhesively secured thereto.
In the specific form shown in the drawing, a sheet A to be corrugated is caused to pass between a pair of intermeshing corrugating rollers II and I2, each having the periphery thereof provided 10 with longitudinally extending corrugations A including grooves and ridges. The corrugated paper is kept in contact with the periphery of the corrugating roller l2 along a portion of the periphery and passes between said roller l2 and 15 a smooth surface pressure roller I3, to press a liner or surface sheet B against the corrugated sheet.
Means are provided for applying adhesive directly to the surface sheet B in strips extending across said sheet and spaced at intervals corresponding to the distance between successive teeth of the rollers H or E2, said means being spaced from the corrugating rollers H and I2 and the smooth roller l3. The sheet B is delivered from a suitable supply roll or other source (not shown) and is passed over an idler l6 and then substantially in a horizontal direction into contact with the smooth surface pressure roller l3. The adhesive applying mechanism is disposed between the pressure roller 63 and the idler I6 and includes an adhesive applying roller l1 disposed on the lower side of the traveling surface sheet B, and cooperating with a pick-up roller IS, the lower portion of which is immersed in a pan l9 containing silicate of soda or other suitable adhesive. Cooperating with the adhesive applying roller l1 and on the opposite side of the traveling surface sheet B there may, if desired, be provided a smooth surface freely rotatable pressure 40 roller 20 for pressing the sheet against the adhesive applying surface of said roller 11. In ordinary practice this roller 20 may be and preferably is omitted, but may-be desired in some cases.
In order that the adhesive be applied to the sur- 45 face sheet B in strips extending across the sheet and spaced at intervals corresponding to the distance between successive teeth of the corrugating rollers l2, the roller II is provided with teeth 2|, the spaces between said teeth being equal to 50 the distance between the successive teeth of the roller l2.
The roller I1 is driven in synchronism with the roller l2 so that the spaces between adjacent adhesive strips applied to the liner B will 55 correspond to the distance between the teeth on the roller I2. In the specific form shown, the drive for the roller I I isfrom the shaft of the roller I2, the other roller being driven by the intermeshing of the two rollers. The roller I2 carries on the shaft thereof a gear 23 meshing with a gear 28 which in turn meshes with a gear 21 mounted on the shaft of the roller II. The gear ratios of these gearsare such that the peripheral speed of the roller I! will be equal to the peripheral speed of the roller I2.
As a feature of the present invention, the pick-up roller I8 is provided with teeth on the surface thereof corresponding to the teeth 2I of the roller I1 so as to mesh therewith and be rotated by said latter roller. The pick-up roller III is thus driven at the same peripheral speed as the adhesive applying roller I1, and the intermeshing of the teeth prevents excess adhesive from collecting on the sides of the teeth 2I. The crowns of the teeth 2| are advantageously fiat like those of ordinary gear teeth so that the strip C of adhesive which is to be applied to the surface sheet B will have a substantial width. The intermeshing of the teeth limits the thickness of the strip.
The sheet B, after it has passed over the adhesive applying roller II, travels around a portion of the periphery of the smooth surface pressure roller I3 and is pressed thereby against the crowns of the corrugated sheet passing therebetween.
I have shown the rollers I1 and I8 of the same size and smaller than the roller I2. This is not essential as there is some advantage in regrinding the teeth or corrugations when they become wornif all three rollers be of the same diameter.
As a feature of the present invention, means are provided for circumferentially adjusting the roller I! in respect to the roller I2, and if desired while the machine is running, so that the adhesive strips on the surface sheet B will surely come directly opposite to or in registry with the crowns of the corrugated sheet passing between the corrugating roller I2 and the pressure roller I3. For that purpose, the gears 23, 26 and 21 have helical teeth and one of said gears, for instance the gear 21, is movable axially to cause the relative. rotation of the rollers I2 and I1. As shown the gear 21 is splined to the shaft of the roller I I for axial movement therealong, and may be moved axially through the operation of a spindle 28 provided with a suitable operating handle 30 and screwed into the bracket 3| suitably supported on the frame structure of the machine. The spindle 28 is connected to one end of a lever 32 which is pivoted intermediate of its ends to the bracket 3i and swingable about its pivot by the rotation of the operating spindle 28. The other end of the lever 32 is provided with a pin, projection or roller extending into a peripheral groove 3| formed in a collar 35 integral or otherwise connected to the gear 21. The circumferential adjustment of the adhesive applying roller I! with respect to the corrugatlng roller I2 may be effected while the machine is running by turning the handle 30 and sliding the gear 21 endwise with its helical teeth engaging the helical teeth of the gear 26.-
The regulation of the silicate carried by the transfer roller Il may be made by an eccentric bushing on the shaft of one of the rollers H or I8. As shown, the shaft of the pick-up roller I8 is eccentrically journaled in hearings or journal boxes 38'sultably supported in the frame structure of the ,machine. These bearings 30 are provided with collars 40 having sockets extending radially from the peripheries thereof for receiving a suitable turning tool. If the roller 20 be employed pressure thereof against the transfer roller Il may be similarly adjusted by eccentric journals or bushings 42.
In order'to facilitate the threading up of the machine there is provided a series of fingers 43 supported on a rod 44 and spaced at intervals therealong. These may extend from the adhesive applying roller I! to the roller I3 and thence along the surface of the latter to near the point of tangency with the roller I2. They are shown quite long, but in practice they may be much shorter and the adhesive roller I1 brought quite close to the roller II.
It is desirable that the sheet A to-be corrugated be heated before being pressed against the liner B in order to eifect better adhesion between the two sheets. For that purpose, the roller I2 is hollow to permit the delivery of steam therethrough, through the bearings thereof. To supplement the heating effected by the steam in the interior of the roller I2, there is provided a heater 45 in the form of a steam chest. This is adapted for receiving steam or suitable heating fluid therein, and extends lengthwise of the corrugating roller I2 in close proximity thereto. Said steam chest has a wall member 41 facing the roller I2 and curved to follow the contour thereof so as to form a portion of the guide in threading up the machine.
In order to strip the sheet from engagement with the roller I I as said sheet passes beyond the intermeshing portions of the two corrugating rollers II and I2, there is provided a series of transversely curved fingers 48 adjacent to the periphery of the corrugating rollers I2 and supported on the heater 45. These fingers 48 extend to or beyond the line of tangency of the pitch circles of the corrugating rollers II and Hand into a series of circumferential grooves 50 in said roller I I to insure proper stripping action.
In orderto not bring the heater too close to the lining sheet B with the stripes of adhesive thereon, the heater may be made narrower than is shown and have fingers at both edges instead of at only one.
The idler roller I6 is preferably vertically adjustable so that by raising the idler (assuming that the roller 20 be omitted) the paper may be lifted oil. the roller II particularly when threading up, and by lowering the idler the paper may be caused to press onto the roller I! with any desired degree of pressure dependent on the tension on the paper. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine for making corrugated paper, including means for corrugating an advancing sheet, means for applying adhesive to an advancing surface sheet in strips extending across said latter sheet and at spaced intervals therealong, means for pressing the advancing adhesively coated sheet against the crowns of the advancing corrugated sheet, and means operable while the machine is running for adjusting said adhesive applying means with respect to said corrugating means, whereby the adhesive strips'of said surface sheet will move into registry with the corrugations of said corrugatedv sheet.
2. A machine for making corrugated paper, including a. pair of corrugating rollers having intermeshing teeth, and adapted to corrugate an advancing sheet therebetween, means for applying adhesive to an advancing surface sheet in strips extending across said latter sheet, and in spaced intervals therealong corresponding to the distance between adjacent teeth of said corrugating rollers, a smooth surface roller for pressing the advancing adhesively coated sheet against the crowns of the advancing corrugated sheet as the latter passes over one of said corrugating rollers, and a heater adjacent to one of said corrugating rollers for heating the sheet after it is corrugated and before the surface sheet is applied thereto, said heater having projecting fingers for guiding the corrugated sheet along the surface of said last mentioned corrugating roller to a point of application of said surface sheet, said fingers extending adjacent to the line of tangency of the pitch circles of said corrugating rollers.
3. A machine for making corrugated paper, including means for corrugating an advancing sheet, an adhesive applying elongated rotatable roller having teeth on the periphery thereof circumferentially spaced in accordance with the spacing of the corrugations of the corrugated sheet, and extending along substantially the entire length of said roller, said teeth being adapted to come successively into engagement with a traveling surface sheet to apply adhesive to said latter sheet in spaced transverse strips thereacross, a second roller having circumferentially spaced teeth meshing with said first mentioned teeth substantially throughout their entire length, and having a driving connection with said adhesive applying roller through said intermeshing teeth, and means for pressing the adhesively coated sheet across the corrugations of said corrugated sheet.

A machine for making corrugated paper, including means for corrugating an advancing sheet, an adhesive applying elongated rotatable roller having teeth on the periphery thereof circumferentially spaced in accordance with the spacing of the corrugations of the corrugated sheet, and extending substantially along the entire length of said roller, said teeth being adapted to come successively into engagement with a traveling surface sheet to apply adhesive to said latter sheet in spaced transverse strips thereacross, a second roller having circumferentially spaced teeth meshing with said first mentioned teeth substantially throughout their entire length, and having a driving connection with said adhesive applying roller through said intermeshing teeth, means for applying adhesive'to the teeth of said second roller to be transferred by said latter roller to the teeth of said adhesive applying roller, and means for pressing the adhesively coated sheet against the crowns of said corrugated sheet.

A machine for making corrugated paper, including means for corrugating an advancing sheet, an adhesive applying elongated rotatable roller having teeth on the periphery thereof circumferentially spaced in accordance with the spacing oi. the corrugations of the corrugated sheet, and adapted to come successively into engagement with a traveling surface sheet to apply adhesive to said latter sheet in spaced transverse strips thereacross, a second roller having circumferentially spaced teeth meshing with said first mentioned teeth for removing excess adhesive from said latter teeth, said rollers having a driving connection through said intermeshing teeth, and means for adjusting one of said rollers to vary the extent of intermesh between the teeth of said rollers.

A machine for making corugated paper, including means for corrugatlng an advancing sheet, an adhesive applying elongated rotatable roller having teeth on the periphery thereof circumferentially spaced in accordance with the spacing of the corrugations of the corrugated sheet, and extending substantially along the entire length of said roller, said teeth being adapted to come successively into engagement with a traveling surface sheet to apply adhesive to said latter sheet in spaced transverse strips thereacross, a second roller having circumferentially spaced teethmeshing with said first mentioned teeth substantially throughout their entire length for removing excess adhesive from said latter teeth, said rollers having a driving connection through said intermeshing teeth, and eccentrically mounted bearings for one of said rollers for varying the extent of intermesh between the teeth of said rollers.

A machine for making corrugated paper, including means for corrugating an advancing sheet, an adhesive applying elongated rotatable roller having teeth on the periphery thereof circumferentially spaced in accordance with the spacing of the corrugations of the corrugated sheet, and extending along substantially the entire length of said roller, said teeth being adapted to come successively into engagement with a traveling surface sheet to apply adhesive to said latter sheet in spaced transverse strips thereacross, and a second roller having circumferentially spaced teeth meshing with said first men-
