Description

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. MORGAN, OF MORGANTOWN, VIRGINIA.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING THE BOLT T0 OBTAIN TAPEIR. IN SHINGLE-MACHINES.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 20,501, dated June 8l, 1858.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH MORGAN, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Sawing Shingles, Staves, Clapboards, or other Material from Bolts or Blocks of ITood; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l, represents a perspective view of the machine. Fig. 2, represents a cross section taken near the front end of the machine.
Similar letters of reference wheie they occur in the several figures denote like parts of the machine in all of them.
My invention relates to the arrangement of devices for adjusting, or changing, the bed on which the bolt drops and receives its proper position for admitting of the proper shaped piece heilig sawed from it, whatever the :torni of that piece may be in its longiu tudinal or cross section.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A, represents a frame constructed in any well known substantial manner. In this frame is hung a saw B, on a vertical shaft C.
D, D, are ways upon which a carriage E, may be traversed past the saw. The carriage E, is furnished with head blocks, dogs, and levers or handles, for properly holding, clamping, and releasing the block, and traversing it past the saw.
Underneath the front end ofthe frame, is hung an eccentric roller F, in supports Gr,
in which it may be raised or lowered, asl
may be required; and above this roller at each of its ends, are hinged at a, a, two swings H, which rest upon the roller F. The swings H, H, are hinged respectively to the plates I, I, which by means of slots and set screws underneath the rails J, J, can be moved to, or from the center of the machine.
On the side of the frame there is an arc or plate K, to which a switch L, is pivotedthe front part of the switch being just iush with a flange Z9, turned on the edge or end of said plate K; and in this flange are notches l, 2, 3, into which the lever c, that is fastened to one end of the eccentric roller F, may catch, when the switch L, is not so arranged as to cover any one of said notches, in which latter case the notch is practically removed, and the lever will pass by it, into the next or open one-the switch acting to make the lever take such of the notches, as the character of the sawing to be done may require.
It will be perceived that, the roller F, is not only hung eccentrically, but that it stands oblique to the frame either horizontally or vertically throughout its entire rotationthough this may be said to be due to its being eccentrically hung. The effect, of this mode of hanging the roller F, is that while the ends of the roller in their rotation or vibration describe a large circle or arc-the center of the roller revolves within its diameter or in other words its center does not rise above or fall below a iixed point. Now,
the center of the roller turning on a fixed point, and its ends turning in a much eX- tended circle-the nearer to the center the less will be the rise and fall of' the perimeter of the roller, and consequently the Jfarther from the center the greater will be the rise and fall, so that as the swings H, are brought nearer to the center of the roller the less will they be elevated and depressed by it-and the less they are elevated and depressed the less taper will be given to the shingle or bolt adjusted upon them, and vice versa. The effect of this eccentric roller is the same as though two frustums of cones were joined at their apices, and hung by ournals at their basis for the circle of rotation enlarges from the center or point of junction to the base.
When sawing shingles, and the swings are properly set on the roller F, the lever c, is changed at every throw from the notch l, to the notch 3, and vice versa. When sawing staves or heading, the lever is set at the notch 2. When the notches 1-3, are being used the switch L, is let down, so as to allow it to slip past the notch 2 without catching.
Having thus :fully described the nature and object ofmy invention what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the eccentric roller F, the swings H, H, and the lever, stop, and switch, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
ELIJ AH MORGAN.
