- the present invention is an improved power driven automatic machine for producing finished corrugated fasteners from strip metal or ribbon without removal of. metal in the making thereof, and thereafter to drive cut to length corrugated fasteners.
- One of the objects of the present Ninvention is to produce from a single ribbon orstrip of metal, through a continuity of operations, employing combined, co-acting, opposed, rotary swaging and slitting rolls, said operations performed without the removal of metal in the simultaneous forming of two opposingly faced penetrating edges and thereby producing two sharpened severed strips; each severed strip having a relatively blunt driving end and a smooth, compressed, work hardened, continuously beveled, 'sharp cutting, penetrating end; V shaped when viewed in end section, said penetrating end may be of scalloped, or of sawtoothed, or of plain edged formation; thereafter, simultaneously to pull, to corrugate andv to feed, to sever, and to drive the completed severed corrugated fastener into wood or other material for such general purposes as the splicing of shooks, box ends. knots, splits, basket bottoms, sash, doors, columns, furniture, wood novelties and the like.,
- I employ a flat, smooth metal ribbon or strip of such commercial width and tolerance, gauge and temper as to simultaneously produce from said strip, two strips, each of said 5 strips having a sharp cutting, beveled penetrating end formed thereon without removal of metal in machining by a rotary metal compressing and slitting process, resultant of a continuous.
- one or both of the sharpened corrugated strips may exit the machine to be coiled on a reel, or one or both said strips may be fed into a companion corrugated fastener driving heads, thereby to 30 produce a. duplex head corrugated fastener making machine.
- the machine may be operated without the fastener driving mechanism functioning and the completed cut to length fastener may be hand 35 hammer driven; or operated without the fastener corrugating, severing and driving mechanism, the sharpened flat fastener stock may be assembled exterior of the machine into coils wound on suitable cores containing several hun- 40 dred feet to the coil.
- corrugated fasteners in coils are sold by weight, a matter which is of importance in the consideration of the object of my improved method of making corrugated 45 fasteners; in that, among the new novel and outstanding features in the manufacture of the corrugatedfasteners of my invention I produce simultaneously from a single strip of metal by a combined severing and compressing process, 50 two strips, each strip having a knife edged penetrating end, V shaped when viewed in end section, susceptible of a wide range of profile formations such as scalloped, or saw tooth, or modifications thereof, or plain edge forma- 55 tion; all machined without removal 0f metal in the making of the penetrating end of the fastener and, therefore, without loss of weight in the manufacture of the completed fastener directly from the metal strip or ribbon.
- each corrugated fastener is formed individually and separately by a milling, shearing, or grinding process in the production of each fastener strip thereby resulting in an appreciable loss of time, and of weight of metal, when compared with the manufacture of fasteners of my invention.
- cut to length fasteners are designated by number, the number referring to the number of corrugations to each fastener and by the distance between the extreme penetrating and driving end, fasteners thus described are sold by count; therefore, it is obvious that in the machine of my invention I produce a greater number of fasteners from a given surface area of material by forming the penetrating end by the method and procedure herein disclosed in whichI employ combined metal compressing and metal severing or slitting means, wherein the metal of the beveled penetrating end is compressed and forced outwardly in such manner as to increase the plan surface area in excess of the original plan area of fastener strip or ribbon.
- such a machine may or may not contain the means for doing the driving, may or may not contain the means for doing the severing, or may or may not contain both the means for doing the driving and the severing; and, on the other hand, if it contains the penetrating edge forming means and corrugating means, then, and for the broader purpose of my invention it may or may not contain the means for cutting oi and driving the fastener.
- the combination of means for automatically forming the beveled penetrating end without removal of metal; combined means for simultaneously and automatically pulling corrugating and feeding two simultaneously sharpened strips formed from one strip, an'd severing means and driving means is new with me.
- the machine includes means for rotatably impressing 0r swaging opposingly into thel fiat side surfaces inter-I mediate the side edges thereof, of a metal strip, a compressed, work hardened, continuously beveled, knife edged, sharp cutting penetrating ends, substantially of X shaped appearance when viewed in endl section before complete severance, and V shaped when viewed in end section after severa-nce; means to return upset metal within the body of thief-strips," means then simultaneously pull said sharpened strips into, and thru 1co- -acting, mated, registered, corrugating rolls, thereby to corrugate said sharpened strips relatively crosswise, to advance a said corrugated strip in the direction of its length; for then cutting ofi' a length of such transversely corrugated strip, and for then driving the finished fastener into the wood or other material in the general direction of the corrugations either with or across the grain of the wood.
- the series of machine operations herein described provides for the rapid and economical manufacture of the new fastener in combination with a fastener severing and driving machine.
- the fastener as an article is free from burrs, is uninterruptedly beveled throughout its longitudinal vlength at the penetrating end thereof, the

The present invention is an improved power driven automatic machine for producing finished corrugated fasteners from strip metal or ribbon without removal of. metal in the making thereof, and thereafter to drive cut to length corrugated fasteners.
One of the objects of the present Ninvention is to produce from a single ribbon orstrip of metal, through a continuity of operations, employing combined, co-acting, opposed, rotary swaging and slitting rolls, said operations performed without the removal of metal in the simultaneous forming of two opposingly faced penetrating edges and thereby producing two sharpened severed strips; each severed strip having a relatively blunt driving end and a smooth, compressed, work hardened, continuously beveled, 'sharp cutting, penetrating end; V shaped when viewed in end section, said penetrating end may be of scalloped, or of sawtoothed, or of plain edged formation; thereafter, simultaneously to pull, to corrugate andv to feed, to sever, and to drive the completed severed corrugated fastener into wood or other material for such general purposes as the splicing of shooks, box ends. knots, splits, basket bottoms, sash, doors, columns, furniture, wood novelties and the like.,
Other objects are to obtain without the removal of metal in the forming of the penetrating end of the fastener thru a sequence of rotary swaging operations upon a smooth flat metal strip or ribbon, adapted to the manufacture of corrugated fasteners, having the required gauge, temper and the width to produce when severed longitudinally intermediate the blunt side edges thereof, two strips of at sharpened fastener stock; each of said severed strips provided with a blunt driving end, a compressed, smooth beveled, continuous sharp cutting penetrating end, V shaped when viewed in end section; thereafter to pass the sharpened flat strips to and between combined power driven co-acting, pulling, 'corrugating and feeding rolls; thereby simultaneously to pull and to advance said strips lengthwise, to corrugate substantially crosswise, i. e., to continuously bend and rebend the metal so as to form corrugations extending alternately on each side of the central or medial plane of the resultant fasteners; and thereafter, to feed said corrugated fastener stock into co-acting fastener severing means and thereafter into fastener driving means, in and after the manner employed in sheet metal fastener driving machines.
More specifically stated, in the machine of my invention I employ a flat, smooth metal ribbon or strip of such commercial width and tolerance, gauge and temper as to simultaneously produce from said strip, two strips, each of said 5 strips having a sharp cutting, beveled penetrating end formed thereon without removal of metal in machining by a rotary metal compressing and slitting process, resultant of a continuous. smooth surfaced, knife edged, beveled pene- 1o trating end, V shaped when viewed in end section.- 'I'he machined metal of the penetrating end of the fastener intermediate the V, of greater density and therefore of greater hardness than the non-beveled metal of the fastener 1s strip; thereafter, the terminal ends of the severed sharpened strips pass to and between my new and improved form of mated gear driven, co-acting, combined, pulling, corrugating and feeding rolls, wherein the sharpened strip is 20 simultaneously pulled into andpassed through and fed out of the corrugating rolls in the direction of its length, is vthereby continuously corrugated by bending and rebending to produce corrugations of parallel formation or of diver- 25 gent formation as. desired. Thereafter, one or both of the sharpened corrugated strips may exit the machine to be coiled on a reel, or one or both said strips may be fed into a companion corrugated fastener driving heads, thereby to 30 produce a. duplex head corrugated fastener making machine.
The machine may be operated without the fastener driving mechanism functioning and the completed cut to length fastener may be hand 35 hammer driven; or operated without the fastener corrugating, severing and driving mechanism, the sharpened flat fastener stock may be assembled exterior of the machine into coils wound on suitable cores containing several hun- 40 dred feet to the coil.
commercially, corrugated fasteners in coils are sold by weight, a matter which is of importance in the consideration of the object of my improved method of making corrugated 45 fasteners; in that, among the new novel and outstanding features in the manufacture of the corrugatedfasteners of my invention I produce simultaneously from a single strip of metal by a combined severing and compressing process, 50 two strips, each strip having a knife edged penetrating end, V shaped when viewed in end section, susceptible of a wide range of profile formations such as scalloped, or saw tooth, or modifications thereof, or plain edge forma- 55 tion; all machined without removal 0f metal in the making of the penetrating end of the fastener and, therefore, without loss of weight in the manufacture of the completed fastener directly from the metal strip or ribbon. In the prior art the penetrating end of each corrugated fastener is formed individually and separately by a milling, shearing, or grinding process in the production of each fastener strip thereby resulting in an appreciable loss of time, and of weight of metal, when compared with the manufacture of fasteners of my invention.
Another salient feature of my .invention is the obvious fact that the width of the original fiat metal strip when measured at right angles to the parallel side edges, is of lesser width than the combined added widths of the two resultant beveled strips simultaneously formed therefrom in accordance with the process and procedure disclosed in the production .of the corrugated fasteners of my invention, when similarly measured between the driving edge and extreme penetrating edge thereof.A In other words, the combined width of the two resultant simultaneously formed severed strips in both the saw edged and plain edged type of fastener, measured from .the extreme driving edge and at right angles thereto, to the extreme penetrating edge tance similarly measured between the parallel side edges of the original strip.
In machines of the prior art the penetrating edge of the fastener is formed singly and is accompanied by the removal of metal from the strip either before or after corrugating, thereby representing an appreciable loss of metal whereas in the machine of my invention I produce two penetrating edges simultaneously without removal of metal. In commercial practice, cut to length fasteners are designated by number, the number referring to the number of corrugations to each fastener and by the distance between the extreme penetrating and driving end, fasteners thus described are sold by count; therefore, it is obvious that in the machine of my invention I produce a greater number of fasteners from a given surface area of material by forming the penetrating end by the method and procedure herein disclosed in whichI employ combined metal compressing and metal severing or slitting means, wherein the metal of the beveled penetrating end is compressed and forced outwardly in such manner as to increase the plan surface area in excess of the original plan area of fastener strip or ribbon.
For the broader purpose vof my invention such a machine may or may not contain the means for doing the driving, may or may not contain the means for doing the severing, or may or may not contain both the means for doing the driving and the severing; and, on the other hand, if it contains the penetrating edge forming means and corrugating means, then, and for the broader purpose of my invention it may or may not contain the means for cutting oi and driving the fastener. In other words, the combination of means for automatically forming the beveled penetrating end without removal of metal; combined means for simultaneously and automatically pulling corrugating and feeding two simultaneously sharpened strips formed from one strip, an'd severing means and driving means, is new with me. Preferably, however, the machine includes means for rotatably impressing 0r swaging opposingly into thel fiat side surfaces inter-I mediate the side edges thereof, of a metal strip, a compressed, work hardened, continuously beveled, knife edged, sharp cutting penetrating ends, substantially of X shaped appearance when viewed in endl section before complete severance, and V shaped when viewed in end section after severa-nce; means to return upset metal within the body of thief-strips," means then simultaneously pull said sharpened strips into, and thru 1co- -acting, mated, registered, corrugating rolls, thereby to corrugate said sharpened strips relatively crosswise, to advance a said corrugated strip in the direction of its length; for then cutting ofi' a length of such transversely corrugated strip, and for then driving the finished fastener into the wood or other material in the general direction of the corrugations either with or across the grain of the wood.
The series of machine operations herein described provides for the rapid and economical manufacture of the new fastener in combination with a fastener severing and driving machine. The fastener as an article is free from burrs, is uninterruptedly beveled throughout its longitudinal vlength at the penetrating end thereof, the
vdetail in the following specification. It is to be understood, however, that the specific disclosure herein is for the purpose of exemplication only and that the scope of the invention is defined in the following claims.

Like parts are designated by like characters thruout the specifications and drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, representative in part, of a commercial form of corrugated fastener feed ing, severing and driving machine, to which I have added parts embodying the principle of my invention. The hollow pedestal A. supports a housingT partly open and partly closed comprising a frame A1, the form of which is immaterial it being only essential that it serve as a firm and rigid mounting for the power actuating mechanism and 'associated parts therein contained, in suitable elevated position.
To operate the machine, pressure .on the foot operated clutch release treadle A releases a one revolution clutch pin A effecting engagement between the power driven flywheel A and the operating shaft B causing same to rotate thru one complete revolution. The operating shaft B is mounted in the hollowed out enclosed portion of housing frame A, in suitable bearings A1".
Reference being had to Fig. 10, a combined crank plate and enclosed cam B integral with the operating shaft B, enclosed in the hollowed out portion of the housing frame A, and positioned rearwardly of the housed fastener driving head A, functions to impart timed reciprocal straight line motion to a co-acting fastener strip severing knife K thru a pin connected rocker arm K pivotally mounted on shaft K and provided with cam roller K5 which contacts the enclosed cam surface of B. A,crank pin B functions thru a p itman B which transmits reciprocal straight line motion to an overhead rod B, which in turn imparts an up and down motion to housed fastener driving head A and to its attached fastener driving blade A.
To the reciprocating overhead rod B is fixedly attached an extension arm B which in turn imparts motion thru a connecting link B to a pawl carrying arm B loosely mounted on a wormv drive shaft F1 and contacting with a ratchet wheel F secured to the outer end of the worm shaft F* and contacting a ratchet engaging pawl Bs loosely secured on the arm B by pin B, A conventional cam release B pivotally mounted on pin B secured to the framev A functions to regulate the length or arc of engagement of the pawl Bs with the ratchet wheel F, so to limit and to regulate intermittent rotation o f the ratchet operated shaft F1.
Reference being had to Fig. 2, the shaft F1 mounted onsuitable support F on the frame A1 is shown in part and broken away, functions to rotate in unison thru a train of gears all of the opposed connected roller mechanisms positioned on frame'A Attached to the shaft F is a series of helical gears F" meshed with corresponding small helical gears F', as in Fig. 2, Fig. 10, Fig. and Fig. 16, xedly attached to the stub end of the adjustable roller receiving and drive shaft F4; immediately above, is fixedly attached a spur gear F5 meshed with a like spur gear F6 fixedly attached tothe stub end of the roller receiving and driving shaft F'.
The 'shafts Ff and F'7 are adapted to receive the key secured strip manipulating rollers of various types, such as are shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 10, Fig. 15, Fig. 16, Fig. 23 and Fig. 24 and modifications thereof. Up and down timed movement of the bar B, actuated as described, causes all of the penetrating end forming rollers S; combined upset metal flattening and feed rollers U; the combined upper paired corrugating roller C1 and corresponding lower paired corrugating rollers C to rotate in a direction to advance the strip R lto and thru strip positioning guides G1 spaced at intervals in advance of and intermediate of the paired, penetrating end bevel forming rollers S of the plain 1 edge type of fastener, or S of the saw tooth type of penetrating end forming roller; thereafter thru upset metal flattening rollers U; thence, thru coacting combined pulling, corrugating and feeding rollers Cl and C, then into the path of fastener driving means; the fastener severing means in cam timed relation to the aforedescribed means.
The machine as illustrated is adapted to impart a variety of tooth formations to the penetrating end of the fastener, i. e., to produce corrugated fasteners of the type known to the trade as "plain edge corrugated fasteners,
' shown in Fig. 7, Fig. 10 and Fig. 19 and in the unc'orrugated sharpened strip form, as in Fig. 12, or of the saw tooth type of corrugated fastener as in Fig. 4, Fig. 5,.Fig. 6, Fig. 11 and Fig. 17 and in the uncorrugated sharpened strip form in Fig. 13, Fig.I 21, and Fig. 22. A wide variety of beveled tooth form swaging rollers may be substituted for the two general types of rollers S1 and S herein shown without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The beveled penetrating end forming swaging rollers, assembled as shown in Fig. 3 and Fig.
16, are mounted in any suitable form of bearings so that the paired swaging rollersmounted on the drive shafts F and F are held in pre-determined registeredmated position, in such manner that the gear driven shaft F1 is held in xed bearings in the 'frame A1 and the gear driven shaft F is held in screw pressed adjustable bearings F, actuated by pressure screws F, which permit spaced adjustment of the cutting edges S of the penetrating edge forming rollers to the desired distance. The safe minimum' allowable distance between the rollers is permanently maintained by safety lands S2 on each of the opposed rollers, said lands functioning by surface contact to prevent the bevel forming cutting edges SI of the roller from contacting, thereby to destroy the sharp cutting beveled edges thereof. Any suitable form of vertical aligning device may be employed such as interlocking grooves S to maintain alignment and.
- register of the cutting edges S1.'
mined width. The strip R initially enters into and is pulled thru the machine from the entering end E of the partly open portion of the frame A, thereafter passes progressively thru one or more sets of strip receiving and positioning guides G1, shown in perspective in Fig. 20 5 and in sectional plan view in Fig. 2. Any desired form of guide may be used to maintain the strip in position to be acted upon by strip manipulating rolls. The guides function to maintain the longitudinal axis and the medial plane of the strip R in such xed predetermined position with respect to the opposed bevel forming edge S1 of the swaging rolls, that when acted upon by swaging rollers initially forms the penetrating end of the fastener R and the cutting edgd l5 R as shown in Fig. 12 in the plain edge type of fastener, and in Fig.V 13 in fastener of saw Moth penetrating edge formation; and is also width as determined by the positioning of the guides l-Gr with respect to the edgegS,1 of the swaging rollers S. The strip may be wholly di- 25 vided by the first set of combined penetrating edge forming and slitting rollers into two beveled sharpened strips, R1 the upper strip, and R2 the lower strip, or may pass successively thru one or more sets of combined penetrating end forming 30 and slitting rolls in such arrangement as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 wherein the strip R is simultaneously beveled in register on its opposed longitudinal sides by the beveled forming and slitting edges S1, each pass advancing the beveled 35 cutting edges S1 of the opposed rolls to greater depth within the strip until severance is completed, thereby producing strips R1 and R'.
During the beveling operation, upset metal S of more or less prominence is thrown up at the outer surface edge of the beveled faces as shown in Fig. 8. The upset metal is returned into the metal of the strip by at surfaced opposed combined strip pulling, feeding and flattening rollers U, shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 9 and Fig. 15 adapted to return the upset metal S into the body of the strips R1 and R. thus reducing the strip to its original thickness, and simultaneously to advance the strip metal in the direction of its length. l
The narrow side edges of the strip R in its initial form, are the blunt driving ends R3 of the severed beveled strips R1 and R. During the forming of beveled sides of the penetrating end R the metal intermediate the sides is compressed thru the area as is indicated by the darkened shaded sections in Fig. 8, Fig.9, Fig. 12, Fig.' 13 and in the enlarged sectional views of Fig. 14, Fig. 23, and Fig. 24. It will be seen that the penetrating end of the fastener is substantially of X shaped appearance when viewed in end section before severance, and V shaped when viewed in end section after severance, thus the cutting edge R4 is formed by the meeting of the planes of the beveled surfaces intersecting 65 intermediate the longitudinal side edges, the sharp cutting edge R* is continuous thruout thev length of the fastener strip inboth the uncorrugated and corrugated state.
The beveled surfaces Ss of the penetrating end 70 forming rolls S and substitute rolls S contact and enter into forced, opposed, rolling and sliding contact with the metal of the strip R during the forming of the smooth, beveled, compressed, penetrating ends of the strips R1 and 75 R. The fixed distance between the cutting edges Sx is capable of being maintain-ed thru lands S2 or by any other desired form of positive roll separating means, so that, during the prog- 5 ress of the strip R thru one set or thru successive sets of penetrating end forming rolls the cutting edge of the roll S1 may be caused to 'successively advance and force its way into the lmetal'of the strip up to the point of severance. .1p In practice there ls a noticeable tendency for the metal of the strip R to rupture during manipulation and leave a ragged penetrating edge R* of appreciable width, due to the side pressure of the beveled moving surfaces of the penetrating 5 edge forming rolls contacting the formed beveled 4side of the embryonic penetrating edges of the metal strip R, thereby creating excessive side pressure on the strips R1 and R2 sufficient to cause the metal intermediate' the cutting edges 2o Sto rupture before the completion of the slit- Ating operation, as is obvious and as is clearly apparent from Fig. 23. In the machine of my invention I employ a series of opposed combined beveled swag-lng and slitting rolls in which the 25 included angle of .the opposed beveled surfaces of the rolls is progressively decreased s as to vreduce side contact between the bevel of the rolls and the metal of the strip R, thereby permitting the cutting edges S1 to function to produce the tu hard, sharp cutting, knife like, swaged cutting edge R of the penetrating end on each severed strip R1 and R as indicated in'Fig. 24 without rupture of the metal to an extent to effect the .sharp cutting properties essential to the pene- :lo trating edge of the fastener. Y
The cutting edge R4 of the strip R1 faces the table A1 which supports the material A in which Ithe fastener is to be driven and the cutting edge R of the strip R is oppositely faced. The sharp cutting severed strips 1'1,l and R next enter into and are pulled thru, respectively, Aan upper pair and a lower pair of gear driven -combined mated co-acting pulling, corrugating and feeding rollers; of which paired rollers C1 V45 engages strip R1 and paired rollers C2 engages strip R, said rollers acting to bend and rebend the sharpened metal strips R1 and Rto produce 'transverse corrugations therein and to simultaneously advance the now corrugated strips R and R thru the corrugated fastener guide plates `G, at the knife end of which is mounted a spring pressed stripper K placed slightly in advance of and functioning to guard the cutting ledge of the stationary co-acting severing knife 55 K1, during the advance of the corrugated strips v into the line of--the driving head A". 'Ihe cutting `edges of the knives K and K are of greater width than the strips Rl and R. It is, theregfore, apparent that the strip Rl crosses the path 0 of the co-acting severing knives K1 and K2 and enters the spring press/ed, severed fastener retaining guides G3, in position to be driven home by the fastener drivingblade A9. The strip R2 may be shunted to move within the exit guides 65- G and thereafter be guided exterior of the machine into a fastener severing and driving head thereby forming duplex fastener driving "heads, or it may be accumulated in coiled form 70 as is indicated by R of Fig. 2.- The forward rnovement of the strips R and R may both be directed' within the guides G in such manner that the co-acting severing knives Kl and K function toform cut to length corrugated fasten- 75 ers R which exit the machine thru the space otherwise occupied by the then disconnected elements A and G. 1 l
Briefly stated, in the machine of my invention one complete rotation of the operating shaft B advances the strip R, by a step by step move- 5 rugating and feeding rollers wherein both strips R1 and R are corrugated and advanced in the 15 direction of their length; thru corrugated fastener severing means K* and K, wherein strips Rl and R2 mayI both be severed' to, produce cut to length fasteners R', as shown in Fig. 19, or the strip R may proceed thru the fastener severing and driving means and in the absence of material A be discharged as completed cut to length fasteners on the table A, and the strip R exit the machine thru the guides G.
The machine is adapted to produce fasteners of the plain edged type as shown in Fig. 7. and of the saw-tooth type in a wide variety of toothy forms as indicatedby Fig. 17, Fig. 19, Fig. 21, and Fig. 22 and in Various combinations of corrugated tooth arrangements as in Fig. 4, Fig. 5, and Fig. 6.. Fasteners of parallel and divergent corrugations may be produced sirnultaneously as is illustrated in Fig. 11 by co-acting corrugating rollers C and C2 wherein two strips are simultaneously corrugated, the strip R1 hav- 35 ing parallel corrugations and the strip R2 having divergent corrugations.
A parallel arrangement and a divergent arrangement of the plurality of sets' or series of ridges and the accompanying depressions appear- 40 ing on the periphery of the mated corrugated rollers, illustrated in Fig. 11, are well known to the prior art. I claim as new with me the combination of arrangement wherein one strip R is simultaneously divided into two sharpened strips R1 and R, and thereafter simultaneously corrugated and thereafter severed, as herein disclosed, described and illustrated.
It will be seen that the two smooth presharpened strips R1 and R entering respectively 50 the corrugating rollers C and C, will be parallel corrugated by the upper roller C and divergently corrugated by the lower roller C2 and both strips will issue without being diverted from the straight line of travel as fed into the rollers for the strip is not shortened by the corrugations any more towards the one edge than towards the other. Hence, the corrugated strips are delivered indefinitely in shape to be wound one upon itself and to form a compact coil of cylindrical contour as shown at R5 of Fig. 2, or the strips may be simultaneously advanced into corrugated fastener severing means'in which both strips are severed into cut -to length corrugated fasteners, R" as in Fig. 19 or advanced into 65 fastener driving means, one strip R1 in frame A1. and the companion strip R2 exits thru guides G4 of the frame A1 of the machine, into exterior related fastener severing and driving means not shown, but similar in all respects to the fastener severing means and the fastener driving means of Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 10 Referring to Fig.v 14, the embryonic beveled penetrating ends Rs indicated by the darkened 'than fasteners Amade by a, shearing or grinding process and having non-compressed, non-hardened penetrating edges.
' The strip metal is advanced in the direction of its length toward the fastener driving end of the machine by a step by step movement imparted by the up and down movement of the pawl carrying arm B1 and the ratchet engaging 'pawl B contacting the ratchet wheel F. The
distance advanced by the strip on each complete revolution of the operating shaft B is controlled by a cam' release B1 contacting the surface of the ratchet engaging pawl B to limit the movement by withdrawing the engaging point between pawl and ratchet wheel. Any suitable timing arrangement may be employed.
