Ar pr rus One object of this invention is the provision of a novel improvementin permanent hair waving apparatus, whereby the lock of hair being waved receives a thorough and Continuous steaming.

In the attainment of this object, various improve:

ments and refinements in' the apparatus are provided, all of which are set forth in the following description.

Referring briefly to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the winding drum holding clamp.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 2, the position of the steam box being shown in broken lines.

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 2 with the steam box in place. Figure 5 is a plan view of the clamp per se in partly open position.

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the steam box 5 with the cover detached.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l0 represents one of the clamp members and H the other, both being hingedly attached to a hinge member l3. The members It and Il may be made of wood or any other desirable heatresisting material. A metal strip I4 is mounted on each of the members In and H by means of 30.138111, fingers l5 integral with this strip, the fingers being preferably riveted thereon. The strips [4 are bent to form rounded grooved sections I6 oppositely disposed to each other and extending the length of the strips. These grooves l6 are 35 lined with rubber or the like H which rubber linings interlock when the clamp is closed. A coat of felt or the like covers the bottom of each Wood member ID and II and a portion ofthe inside wall of each section, as shown at IS. A 4 metal base 20 is secured on each member iii and I I at the end opposite the hinge, these bases preferably forming extension tongues integral with the strips I4, as shown in Figure 3. One of these bases is provided with a smooth-surfaced hole 45 through which a screw 2| passes, the other base having a threaded hole therein into which the screw 2| extends for the purpose of locking the clamp in closed position. The bases or tongues 20 are bent into angular shape, and secured to 50 the bent arms thereof are a pair of resilient fingers 23 having their bases 22 in contact with the arms of the tongues 20. It is obviously simple to spread these fingers 23 to insert or extract one end of the winding drum core 24, which .55 is hollow in the fashion of a pipe.

The winding drum or spool comprises'a scooped: ut spool 25*,having; a plurality ofzholes 26 .extending transversely therethrough. An axial channel is provided in the spool, and therethrough extends a core or pipe 21 one end of 5 Which extends beyond the spool end to provide an open nipple 28. The other end of the core 21, shown at 29, is sealed and stops near the other end of the spool. A hub 30 extends from the latter end of the spool and is slotted on opposite 10 sides to receive resilient tongues 3i therein attached to the hinge member l3; this engagement of the hub 30 with these tongues prevents rotation of the spool 25. The core or'pipe 2i 7 is provided with holes communicating with the 15 spool holes 26.

On the undersides of the strips M are secured by rivets or in any other desirable manner, the side members 32 which together form the bottom of a box hereinafter described. Each member 32 20 has a notch cut out thereof, these notches complementing each other when the box is in closed position to form an opening 33 which surrounds the neck between the strips M and the grooves l6.

A cover 34 is provided for the box when the 25 two halves 32 are joined (which is the case when the clamp lil-H is in closed position), the cover having end cut-outs 35 to permit passage therethrough of the nipple end 28 of the core pipe 21. Suitable steam-proofing packing is provided be- 3 tween the bottom and cover of the box, as well as in other places, as shown, where steam or water are apt to escape, particularly in the stuffing box 36 formed of the two complementary halves secured to the clamp members It and II. 35

In use, the lock of hair is wound on the spool 25 which is then mounted between the members I 0 and. in the end supports or

The clamp is then looked and tightened by the screw 2|, after which the cover 34 is applied on the box, the nipple 28 extending through the opening 35 of the cover. A tube (not shown) leading from a steam supply is then attached to the nipple 28, whereby steam enters the core 27 and passes therefrom through the holes 26 into the box. Thus the hair becomes thoroughly steamed, and the retention of the steam within the box assures a relatively constant temperature therein.

Obviously modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

I claim:

A device of the class described comp-rising a pair of elongated clamping members hingedly connected at one end, means at the other end for locking said members together, means for releasably supporting a. spool on said members in locked position, a spool adapted to be supported in said last-named means having an axial bore therein, said spool having holes extending transversely therethrough into said bore, a pipe passing into said bore and having holes communicating with said spool holes, and a box having the lower portion thereof formed of two complementary bottom portions one mounted on each of said clamping members, the upper part or top of said box including a detachable cover adapted to be mounted thereon when said complementary portions are united by locking said clamping members together, said pipe having a nipple extending through said box adapted to have a steam supply tube attached thereto.

2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of elongated clamping members hingedly connected at one end, means at the other end for lockinglsaid members together, means for releasably mounting a spool on said members, a spool adapted to be mounted in said last-named means having an axial bore therein and transverse holes extending through said spool and bore, a nipple extending from said spool and communicating with said bore and having holes therein aligned with said spool holes, a. steam box surrounding said spool and comprising a pair of complementary bottom members one mounted on each of said clamping members, said complementary members uniting to form the bottom of to be mounted thereon when said complementary members are united, said nipple extending through said box and adapted to have a. steam supply tube attached thereto.
