This invention relates to boilers for heating purposes and. has particular application to the type of boilers wherein the gaseous products of combustion or other heating gases are directed through a gas passageway or conduit surrounded by water compartments of various constructions and which are employed with low pressure steam or hot water house-heating systems. 7
Among the objects of this invention is to provide a boiler of this kind having a main water chamber and an auxiliary quick-heating water chamber separate from each other but connected by outside conduit means for fluid circulation.
A further object of this invention consists in the use of a water-lined auxiliary quick-heating chamber as the floor and vertical walls of the fire pot of the boiler in combination with the outside, fluid-circulation, conduit means.
More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a boiler as above described and comprising a plurality of section castings with passageways and partition means in proper registry to form the main water compartment, the auxiliary water compartment and fire pot and 0 heating gas compartment, and to provide these section castings with outside integrally-cast conduits connecting the main water compartment with the auxiliary water compartment.
Other, further, and more specific objects of this invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a boiler embodying my invention showing the use of two intermediate section castings with front and rear section castings.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section along line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and between the front casting and. the adjacent intermediate casting, portions of the apparatus being broken away to show the interior construction of a casting and the disposition of the outside conduits connecting the main and auxiliary water compartments.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the boiler shown in Fig. 1 and taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of my invention, a portion of the device being broken away to illustrate the interior construction of the section castings which form part of the main water compartment but which are not part of the auxiliary water compartment.
Fig. 5 is a section along line 5-5 of Fig. 1 and of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section along line 6-6 of Fig. l.
The boiler shown in Figs. 1 to 3 comprises the front section casting l, the intermediate section castings 2 and the rear section casting 3. The front casting l contains the opening 4 through 5 which passes the pipe 5, commonly known as the wind pipe, extending from an oil burner B, preferably of the pressure atomizing type. This front casting l is also provided with passageways 6, a cavity 1 and the hollow portions 8 and 9. 10 The intermediate castings 2 are provided with passageways I 0, H and I2 and hollow portions I 3 and I l. The rear casting 3 is formed with the, passageways I5 and 16, the cavity l1, and hollow portions l8 and l9.
When the castings l, 2 and 3 are assembled in operative position, the passageways 6 in casting I are in registry and continuous with corresponding passageways ID in the adjacent intermediate casting 2. These passageways it are inregistry and continuous with corresponding passageways IE! in the other intermediate casting 2, and these latter passageways l0 are in registry and continuous with corresponding passageways l5 in casting 3. The corresponding passageways H in the intermediate castings 2 are in registry and continuous with each other, and the passageways IE in casting 3 are in registry and continuous with corresponding passageways II in the adjacent intermediate casting. The large passageway l2 in each of the intermediate .castings 2 is in registry and continuous with that in the other casting 2, one of these large passageways l2 also being in registry and continuous with the cavity I! in the rear casting 3, while the other large passageway I2 is continuous and in partial registry with the cavity 1 in the front casting I.
Secured to the rear casing 3 is a door or cover 20 disposed over the passageways l5 and I6 and of sufiicient depth to afford a connecting-passage 2| between these passageways l5 and I6.
The large passageway 12 in each of the intermediate castings 2 and the cavities l and IT in the front casting l and rear casting 3, respectively, provide both a fire pot 22 which receives the combustible mixture from the oil burner B through the pipe 5 and wherein the combustible mixture is burned, and a heating gas compartment in open and direct communication with the fire pot, which heating gas compartment includes the upper part 50 of cavity Tin casting I; passageways II and I6, connecting-passage 2| and, passageways l5, l0 and 6. The heating gases exit through pipe 23, which connects with a smoke stack (not shown).
The floor and the vertical walls of the fire pot are preferably lined with a coating 24 of plastic refractory material of adequate thickness to absorb heat and to radiate heat back to the flame of the burner and sufficiently thin to promptly transfer heat therethrough to the fluid in the hollow portions 9.
The materials employed for making a suitable plastic refractory for use in my boiler may be selected from a wide range of substances commonly employed in the boiler art and which include silicon carbide, raw fire clay, calcined fire clay, magnesium oxide, chrome ores, mica, talc, quartz kaolin, diatomaceous and infusorial earths, tripoli,
kieselguhr, alundum, fire brick, magnesite, ganister, Portland and hydraulic'cements, gypsum, anhydrite, volcanic scoriae, and slag. Some of these materials may be used alone, while all of these substances have been employed in combinations of two or more in various compositions, the proportions being varied to meet the particular needs and fancyof the manufacturerv and/or user. These materials are comminuted to the desired size and a suitable binder in liquid form is added to yeld a. plastic mixture suitable for molding and/or application in plastic form as may be desired...
In .thespecification and claims the term plastic refractory material has referenceto a. substance prepared from materials, such as are. described above, and which is plastic during its application and subsequently becomes rigid.
The hollow portion 3 in the front casting l, the hollow portion [3 in each of the intermediate castings .2 and .thehollow portion l8 in the rear casting 3 form the main water-compartment of the boiler. These hollow portions are separate from each other and are in. communication only through the slip nipples 25 which connect adjacent castings at the-top of the main water compartment.

In each casting .there is provided an integral partition 28'which separates the hollow portion of the main water compartment from the hollow portion of the auxiliary water compartment. These partitions-26. are preferably obliquely inclined to the vertical walls of the boiler and, when thus inclined,possessthe advantages of better direction of the flowof water into the outside conduits, of avoiding, the formation of air pockets and also of avoiding thesetting up of objectionable eddies in the hot water. If desired, however, these partitions may be perpendicular. to the vertical walls of the boiler. The refractory lining 24 generally extends to or slightlybeyond these partitions.
Communication between the main water compartmentand the. auxiliary water compartment isestablished by external conduits or pipes which are cast integral with but outside. of .the rest of the casting of which the conduit formsa part. In mypreferred form, I provide each casting with an outside integral-conduit 21 which extends from These conduits serve to bring the cooler water from the main water compartment above to the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment below.
I have found that the best results are derived by having the conduits 21 extend from the upper part of the auxiliary water compartment to the upper part of the main water compartment, and the conduits 28 extend from the lower part 01' themain watercompartment to the lower part of theauxiliary water compartment, but satisfactoryresults may under various conditions be obtained where the conduit openings are located in other positions with respect to the water compartments.
Instead of providing each of the castings with one or more of the upcomer conduits 21 and one or. more of the downcomer conduits 28, either upcomer or downcomer conduits may be left off some of the castings or, if desired, assemblies may be made including one 'or more .castings having none ofthese conduits. Where a conduit serves the hollow-portions orzwater passageways of more than one casting, provision is made for sufficient intercasting fluid passage.

In the modification shownin Fig. 4, the intermediate section castings 2"and the rear sectionv casting} are, like thecorresponding section cast ingsillustratedin Figs. 1 to'3. However, the upper portion of the section casting 34 of Fig. 4 which corresponds to the sectioncasting l in Figs. 1 and 2.is so constructed that a section casting 35, such as shown in Fig. 6, may be positioned adjacentthereto and thus provide an extension of the heating gas, compartment and an. enlargement, of the main water compartment. In Fig.4, there areshown three of these shorter intermediate castingsv 35, each of which contain gas passageways36and water passageways 31. This boiler also comprises the end section casting 38 which has the water passageways 39 and the gas. passages, M3. The gas passages 36in each of the castings.35'are in registryv and continuouswith thegas passages Bin section 34 and the gaspas sagesdfl in section 38. These sections are also connected at the top and bottom by slip nipples 25. The water passageways 3! and 39, form part of. the main water compartment of the boiler. This form of boiler provides for anincrease in f capacity of the main water compartment without increasing the capacity of the auxiliary quickheating water compartment. Also, the space below the main water compartment may be conveniently employed for the oil burner B, as shown in volume and capacity of the boiler through corresponding increase or decrease of the number of sections, and my new boilers possess the fur-v ther advantage that, in making repairs, one or more sections may be readily replaced instead of necessitating the replacement of the entire boiler.
The present invention is not limited to the specific details set forth in the foregoing examples which should be construed as illustrative and not by way of limitation, and in view of the numerous modifications which may be effected therein without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention, it is desired that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a house heating boiler, a plurality of interconnected section castings including a pair ofend castings, said castings having inner hollow portions constituting the main water compartment and an auxiliary quick-heating water compartment and forming a fire pot and a heating gas compartment communicating with said fire pot, and said inner hollow portionsin one of the end castings forming an opening in said end casting for receiving the wind pipe of a fluid fuel burner, partition means in an inner hollow portion of each casting extending across said hollow portion from the inner wall thereof to the outer wall thereof for separating the inner hollow space of each casting into a distinct upper hollow chamber and a distinct lower hollow chamber, said upper hollow chambers of the castings forming said main water compartment of the boiler and said lower hollow chambers of the castings forming said auxiliary quick-heating water compartment of the boiler, and means comprising conduits extending from the main water compartment to the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment for fluid circulation between said water compartments. 1
2. In a house heating boiler, a plurality of interconnected section castings including a pair of end castings and an intermediate casting, said castings having inner hollow portions constituting the main water compartment and an auxiliary quick-heating water compartment and forming a fire pot and a heating gas compartment communicating with said fire pot, and said inner hollow portions in one of the end castings forming an opening in said end casting for receiving the wind pipe of a fluid fuel burner, partition means in an inner hollow portion of each casting extending across said hollow portion from the inner wall thereof to the outer wall thereof for separating the inner hollow space of each casting into a distinct upper hollow chamber and a distinctlower hollow chamber, said upper hollow chambers of the castings forming said main water compartment of the boiler and said lower hollow chambers of the castings forming said auxiliary quick-heating water compartment of the boiler, said fire pot having a coating of plastidrefractOiy material of adequate thickness to absorb heat and to radiate heat back to the flame of the burner and sufficiently thin to transfer heat therethrough to the fluid in the water compartment, and means comprising conduits extending from the main water compartment to the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment for fluid circulation between said water compartments.
3. In a house heating boiler, a plurality of interconnected section castings including a pair of end castings and intermediate castings, said castings having inner hollow portions constituting the main water compartment and an auxiliary quick-heating water compartment and forming a fire pot and a heating gas compartment communicating with said fire pot, and said inner hollow portions in one of the end castings forming an opening in said end casting for receiving the wind pipe of a fluid fuel burner, partition means in an inner hollow portion of each casting extending across said hollow portion from the inner wall thereof to the outer wall thereof for separating the inner hollow space of each casting into-a distinct upper hollow chamber and a distinct lower hollow chamber, said upper hollow chambers of the castings forming said main water compartment of the boiler and said lower hollow chambers of the castings forming said auxiliary quick-heating water compartment of the boiler, said fire pot having a thin coating of plastic refractory material, and means comprising conduits extending from the main water compartment to the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment for fluid circulation between said water compartments.
4. In a house heating boiler, a plurality of interconnected section castings including a pair of end castings, said castings having inner hollow portions constitutin the main Water compartment and an auxiliary quick-heating water compartment and forming a fire pot and a heating gas compartment communicating with said fire pot, partition means in an inner hollow portion of each casting for separating the main water 1 compartment from the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment, said fire pot having a thin coating of plastic refractory material, and means comprising outside conduits extending from the main water compartment to the auxiliary quickheating water compartment for fluid circulation between said water compartments.
5. In a house heating boiler, a plurality of interconnected section castings including a pair of end castings and an intermediate casting, said castings having inner hollow portions constituting the main water compartment and an auxiliary quick-heating water compartment and forming a fire pot and a heating gas compartment communicating with said fire pot, partition means in an inner hollow portion of each casting for separating the inner hollow space of each casting into a distinct upper hollow chamber forming part of said main water compartment and-a distinct lower hollow'chamber forming part of said auxiliary quick-heating water compartment, and 'means comprising outside conduits extending from the main water compartment to the auxiliary quick-heating water compartment for fluid circulation between said water compart ments.
