IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-PENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,857, dated June ll, 1878;,application filed May 13, 1878.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN W. STANTON, of Philadelphia, in the county of PhiladelphiaJ and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain- Pens 5 and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.

My invention relates to fountain-pen holders; and it con sists in the construction and arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevation with the cap removed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.

A represents the pen-sheath, constructed in suitable manner to receive the pen B. In the inner end of the pen-sheath A is secured the rubber reservoir C, to contain the ink; and the ink is fed from said reservoir through a curved glass tube, D, to the pen B.

To Iill the reservoir with ink it is only neoessary to compress the same to expel the air, and insert the point of the glass tube D in ink and allow the reservoir to expand, when the ink will be drawn into the same.

F represents the handle, made to inclose the reservoir and iit on the upper end of the pensheath A. This handle is provided with a slot at a, through which the thumb is made to press on the rubber reservoir for the purpose of forcing out one or more drops of ink, as required, during the writin g.

G is the cap or cover, iitting over the pen and end of pen-sheath when the pen-holder is carried in the pocket. While thus carrying the pen-holder the reservoir might accidentally be pressed in through the thumb-slot a, and expel a certain portion of the ink. To obviate this difficulty I provide a sleeve or sliding tube, I, to cover the thumb-slot. This sleeve may be made separate and placed on the handle F, so as to be moved up and down on the same;

.or it may be made by forming an extension on the cap or cover Gr, which then extends far enough up over the handle to cover the slot a. With this sleeve, whether in one form or the other, there is no danger of the ink being'forced out of the reservoir while the holder is being carried in the pocket.

At the point on the handle where the foreinger naturally comes the surface is roughened, as shown at b, in any suitable manner, so as to prevent the. holder from slipping and give freedom of the hand in writin g.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a fountain-pen holder, the combination of the pen-sheath A, rubber reservoir C, and hollow handle F with thumb-slot a. and the sliding sleeve I, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, afountainpen holder consisting of the pen-sheath A, rubber reservoir C, with outlet-tube D, the hollow handle F, having slot a and exterior roughened surface b, the sliding sleeve I, and cap Gr, all constructed and combined substantially as and for the-purposes herein set forth.
