Claims.
7 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable heads for lamp sockets. The invention has for an object the construction of adjustable heads which are each charac- 5 terized by a solid cylindrical body supporting a positive and a negative pole, a hollow semi-spherical shell having a pair of parallel spaced slots and mounted on said cylindrical body, and a pair of conductor strips pivotally mounted on said posl0 itive and negative poles and extending through said slots and pivotal along the slots, and at their outer extremities supporting a lamp socket. The arrangement permits the lamp socket to be pivoted in a plane parallel with the planes of the slots in the semi-spherical shell. A feature of the construction resides in the fact that the conductor strips performs a joint function, namely, the pivotal supporting of the lamp socket and theconducting of the electric current to the lamp socket. A further important object of the invention is the provision of novel means for insulating the conductor strips from the hollow semi-spherical shell so as to prevent short circuiting. 1
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of insulation'material encasing the conductor strips, and insulation blocks mounted on the conductor strips and slidably arranged along the edges of the slots in the semi-spherical shell in a. particular manner.
'3 A further object of the invention is the provision of a means for converting a floor lamp into a table or bridge lamp or vice versa. g
' A further object of the invention is the construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. v

. The invention may best be understood by first examining Figs. 4-8 inclusive. A lamp socket I1 is supported upon the conductor strips 15 and I6 and electrically connected therewith. The conductor strips I5 30 and I6 are insulated against being short circuited .with the edges of the slots !4 as hereinafter further amplified.
The cylindrical body I0 is mounted, within a .casing' ill which is provided with anipple 10 at' its bottom extremity. tional hollow, construction so that wires, not shown, may pass therethrough and through the nipple 10 to reach the poles II and I2. The pole II is integral with a transverse bar II attached'by screws 24 upon the top surface to facilitate the understanding of the construetion it is stated that the socket is formed with a shell contact into which the lamp za screws, and an end contact which electrically connects with the end contact of the lamp 28. strip I5 connects with one of the contacts .of the socket I1 and the conductor strip I6 with the other contact so as to form the electric circuit through the socket and thus through the lamp.

An insulation block 29 is mounted upon each of the conductor strips and upon the insulation covering material thereof andis of a width so that one side 29 thereof is adapted to be in intimate contact withfone side of the slot I4, and the diametrically opposite side 29 of the block is formed with a groove 29 simultaneously engaged on the diametrically opposite edge of the slot I4.

In Figs. 9 and 10 an adjustable head is shown provided with a shell 38. This shell comprises an inverted cup extending over the semi-spherical shell and attached upon the lower end of the socket H. The purpose of this'shell is to prevent uninformed persons from inserting metallic objects through the slots I4 which may produce a short circuit. 7

An adjustable head for lamp sockets, comprising a solid cylindrical body supporting a positive and a negative pole, a hollow semi-spherical shell having a pair of parallel spaced slots and formed with a base cylindrical portion mounted upon said cylindrical body, a pair of conductor strips pivotally mounted on said positive and negative poles coaxial with an axis of the semispherical shell and extending through said slots and pivotable along the slots, a lamp socket supported on said strips, and insulation on the strips for protection against short circuiting with the edges of the slots, comprising sheet covering material upon the strips and insulation blocks on the covering material, said insulation blocks having one of their sides slidably engaging one of the sides of the slots and the other of their sides formed with grooves engaged with the other sides of the slots, each of said slots being formed with a cut out area to permit the conductor strip to be flexed so that the block engages therein and the groove thereof disengages from the edge of the slot, and means for normally holding the strips against flexing into positions in which the blocks engage in the cutouts.

An adjustable head for lamp sockets, comprising a solid cylindrical body supporting a positive and a negative pole, a hollow semi-spherical shell having a pair of parallel spaced slots and formed with a base cylindrical portion mounted upon said cylindrical body, a pair of conductor strips pivotally mounted on said positive and negative poles coaxial with an axis of the semispherical shell and extending through said slots and pivotable along the slots, a lamp socket supported on said strips, and insulation on the strips for protection against short circuiting with the edges of the slots, comprising sheet covering material upon the strips and insulation blocks on the covering material, said insulation blocks having one of their sides slidably engaging one of the sides of the slots and the other of their sides formed with grooves engaged with the other sides of the slots, each of the said slots being formed with a cut out area to permit the conductor strip to be flexed so that the block engages therein and the groove thereof disengages from 'the edge of the slot, and means for normally holding the strips against flexing into positions in which the blocks engage in the cutouts, comprising springs mounted on the socket and engageable against the sides of the insulation of the said conductor strips.
