SELECTOR FOR CALCULATING MACHINES Filed NovA 14, 1933 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented July 21, 1936 PATENT ori-ICE :Maze: sELEc'ron Foa oawmmo mcmNEs Ernst Valfrid Gustafson, Saint Essingen, and Gusta! Bilal-lus Hellgren, Malmo, Sweden Application November 14, 1933, Sa'lal No. 098,005 In Sweden December 6, 1932 3 Claims. (Cl. 23S-60) This invention relates to selectors adapted to form a part of calculating machines of the tenkey type such as shown, for example, in Patent No. 1,930,475, granted October 17, 1933, on our prior application Ser. No. 327,587. The selector disclosed in that patent is claimed per se in our prior application Ser. No. 598,647. iiled March 14, 1932, and the present invention relates to further developments in selectors of this general type.
An object of this invention is to provide improved selector constructions of the type in which numeral tongues are displaced by keys to serve as stops for calculator elements, the tongues being arranged in decimal order rows and having bent ends that engage the wall of a slotted or grid-like housing to retain the actuated tongues in displaced position. An object is to provide a selector of the character stated in which the bent ends of the tongues carry value designations for indicating the numerical quantity represented by the actuated numeral keys or in which the bent ends have the form of pointers which cooperate with numeral scales on the housing to indicate the set numerical quantity. More particularly, an object is to provide a selector including a housing having a slotted or grid-like wall, a selector carriage normally positioned laterally of the housing, rows of numeral tongues on the carriage, and key-actuated mechanism for displacing a tongue of successive rows and simultaneously moving the carriage into the housing, the displaced tongues entering slots in the housing and having bent ends which overlie the housing to retain the actuated tongues in displaced positions. A further object is to provide a selector of the character last stated, and in which the actuated tongues slide 0H of the slotted wall of the housing to return to normal position when the `carriage is restored to its normal position laterally of the housing at the end of a calculating operation.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following specification when taken with the accompanying drawings that illustrate some preferred embodiments of the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 shows a vertical section through the selector showing one numeral key and a portion of a calculating or actuating member. Fig. 2 shows a selector and some parts of the frame of the machine `in a front view, the front part of the housing of the machine having been left out. Figs. 3 and 3a show a stop tongue in a lateral and in a plan view. Fig. 4 shows the selector in the same manner as in Fig. 2 but in a diiIerent position. Fig. 5 shows a selector in the same position as in Fig. 4 in which, however, the projecting end of the stop tongues has the form of a pointer. Figs. 6 and 7 show modiiications of such a stop tongue provided with a pointer or pointers. Fig. 5 8 shows a vertical section through a portion of the housing of the calculating machine in which the covering plate with the slots shown in Fig. 1 has been replaced by rods. Fig. 9 shows some o! these rods provided with strips on which the 10 ligure-indications are arranged. Fig. 10` shows the mounting and guiding of the rods.
In the following those parts only will be described more fully, which diier from the construction shown in our prior patent. The stop 15 tongues I as shown in Figs. 1 and 8 project in the present case somewhat'beyond the outer plate 2 of the selector and their ends 3 are bent at an angle and provided with ligure-indications, see Figs. 2, 3, and 4. When a tongue is pressed out 20 of the selector by means of a key I and the selector simultaneously is displaced, the front end of the tongue is introduced into a slot 5 in a covering plate E which is xed to the housing 1 of the calculating machine. The covering plate 6 25 is set back in the housing and the space formed thereby is covered by a protecting plate 8 of glass, mica, or some similar transparent material. The dash-dotted lines of Fig. 1 showthat a tongue i a corresponding to the numerical value 5 has been pressed out by the numeral key and is situated in a slot 5 oi.' the covering plate 6. On account of the angular form of this tongue this latter is prevented from falling back to its normal position.
Fig. 2 shows a selector in its normal initial posi- 35 tion and Fig. 4 shows that the value 8685 has been introduced into the selector. All tongues, except said four in the ilrst four vertical rows, remain invisible as also dc the others which are situated behind the housing oi' the calculating 40 machine.
According to a modification the tongues have at their projecting ends the form oi' a double pointer 9, l0, Fig. 6, or the form of a single pointer Il, Fig. 7. In this case the covering plate is 45 l provided with iigure-indications i2, as disclosed in Fig. 5. 'Ihis figure also shows in a similar manner to Fig. 4 that the numerical value 868 has been introduced into the selector.
As further disclosed in Fig. 5 the pointers i l 50 are so arranged relative to the figure-indicat'ions that their points are in alignment with the figures. In case the tongue according to Fig. 6 is utilized, the points 9 and I0 will be situated on either side of the respective ligure-indication. 55
In order to distinctly mark the finire-indications which come under consideration at the respective calculating operation it is preferred to dinerentiate the pointers and the figures by dinerent colours. For instance, the gures may thus be made white on a black bottom and the pointers may be red.
Instead of using a covering plate having slots, rods i3 may be employed, such as shown in Figs. 8-10. These rods are ilxed in a plate Il which is mounted on brackets IB, It which by means of screws are securely fixed to the main frame I1 of the calculating machine. In order to guide the free ends oi the rods the selector may be provided with an end plate Il having corresponding holes I9, so that the rods pass through these holes when the selector is displaced. In this case, it is preferable to use tongues having ligureindications. but naturally small strips 2l having ligure-indication may be mounted on the rods, such as indicated in Fig. 9, and then tongues such as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 'I are utilized.
What we claim iszl. In selector mechanism for calculating machines of the type having an outer casing pro-l vided with window openings, a housing having an outer wall positioned at a window opening of the calculating machine, said wall being provided with a plurality of horizontal slots extending inwardly from an open end of said housing, a carriage normally positioned laterally of the window i opening and adaptedeto be displaced into the said housing from the open end thereof, a plurality ofstoptongneamovablymnntedm-ldlriageandarrangedinaphu'llitydvu'ledumns. saidtongubdmarrllledlnrv'lin alinement wlththeaeveralslutsdnidlnlmgwmmwnmmmmmnmi catorendnormallytotherenrdthe surfadeiinedbysddsbttedwalandmelm forselectivelymovlngaddredtmguetomjed theindicatingendthenelbeyuullthl:surfacedl:- 1n nedbysaidslottedwalLwherelUt-hedisliamentotsaid n'lageinto saidhnnslmwhm Oneormetonguesaresonnved'illhrlmthe indicatorendsofthemovedtlliguesinovie' nmewmduwopmmgmnmraunnnued wallofsaidselectorhmlsim.
