' COMPACT Filed July 15, 1955 12 klm \\1 Patented July 21, 1936 COMPACT Paul H. Ganz, New York, N. Y.
Application July 13,
Claims.
This invention relates to a compact or-,the like, adapted to contain powder, `cosmetics and similar substances.V 4 Y Among the objects of my invention are the provision in a compact of closure means for conveniently opening and closing the compact, the provision of closure means that will be Veffective ,against loss of the contents or the aroma thereof,
Y landthe provision of closure means distributed in relation to theL parts to `be held together instead of being concentrated in a restricted zone inthe customary way, whereby the danger of opening at improper times is minimized, and the vprovision `of, closure means iiexiblyv supported in relation Vto the compact.
I attain these objects by providing a compact with a cover having parts thereof interfitting with the parts of the body so that the contacting surfaces of cover and body are of ample area and Vthe provision in connection with Vsuch surfaces of a slide fastener, parts of which are flexibly carried from thecover and'the bottom, and 'extend along the contacting portions thereof, and are adapted to hold the said interengaging surfaces in the closure position, and which form, in conjunction with the aforementioned `inter-litting surfaces of cover and body, a double barrier, preventing escape of the contents andits aroma when the compact is closed. j,
For the attainment of these objects and such other objects as will hereinafterV appear or be pointed out I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention inthe drawing, in Which:-
v,Figure 1 is a plan view of a compact constructed according to my invention;
, Figure 2 is a sideelevation of the same,viewed from the left of Figure 1;
vFigure 3 is a side elevation of the sameviewed ,from the right of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view on the line ,4e-4 of Figure 1; and 1 l ,Figure 5 is a ,perspective view showing the cover in, its open position and withfthe interior and the contents thereof exposed to view.
Referring to the drawing in detailit will be observed .that my compact comprises a body member having a bottom I and a rim I2 upstanding therefrom so as to form a hollow adapted to receive material to be carried by the compact, such as the powder indicated at I4. The rim I2 may be made of rigid material so as to be form-retaining, and is shown in the illustrative embodiment as circular in external contour and circular in internal contour except at the back where the rim is widened as shown at I3, so that 1935, serial No. 31,170 (o1. 132-82) the hollow interior has a contour that is circular but'with a segment at the back lled in. v`rThe cover member I6 is hinged at I8 to the edge of the widened portion I3 of the rim, and is contoured so as to conform to the outlines of the bottom' portion. A mirror 20 is shown as'carried by the inside surface of the cover member I6 and this mirror is circular in shape, except that Va segment of the circle is removed at the: back thereof. The mirror is further made of suchsize thatv it will fit closely within the space bounded by the inner portion of the rim whereby-it will serve to keep the cover inv alignment with the bottom when the cover is in closed position and its outer edges will provide additional surfaces at the juncture of the cover and the bottom, cooperating with the upper edge ofthe rim and the surfaces on the cover contacting therewith, for more effectively preventing escape of the contents and of the aroma thereof. It will be observed that in this arrangement, as illustrated, the two sets of cooperating 'surfaces are angularly related to eachother, and this angular break, lby destroying the directnless of the path of escape of the contents of the compact, where such a path exists 'because' of poor interiitting between the cover and body members, is more leflicient in preventing such escape than a continuous flat surface of the same area would be.
In order to hold the cover in closed position I provide a closure of the slide fastener type arranged, with one of the interlockingjaw members 22 thereof fastened -to the periphery of the cover member I6, and the other interlocking jaw member 24 thereof fastened to the periphery of the base member. 'I'he interlocking members, .as ,shown in the drawing, are 'i1exible, andv they are of such width that when interlocking ther'eofis effected bythe closure member 26, the cover and lthebody will be closely held together, with portions of the surfaces thereof in close contact and Awith the outer edges ofthe mirror in close adjacency to the inner `surface of the rim of the body member.` The slide fastener thereby forms, in,
The portions 22 and 24 of the slide fastenerare extended at one side in back of the hinge member I8, so that the closure member 26 may slide beyond the hinge I8 and when in such position the cover Will be free to rise from the case. AtA the other end of the slide fastener such extension is not necessary, although, if desired, the slide Vdefined in the appended claims.
fastenerat this point may also be extended in back of the hinge I8.
'I'he interior of the compact may bearranged in any preferred manner. For example Vover` the powder there may be arranged a sifter 28 to hold the powder I4 in place and yet permit its passage therethrough, and above the sifter may "f tion or tov permit vthe case member to open said be kept a powder puff 30.
. It will further be understood that for the pur-J poses of making a commercially attractivear- `ticle that the entire case may beV appropriately; covered with attractive material and that otherA ornamental touches may be Vadded to the same asrdeslred. Y t .i
' While I have shown one embodiment of my invention it will be understood that the same may be embodied in many other forms, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art, and that the disclosure herein is Ito be interpreted as illustrative merely and in no sense limiting, Vand that I do not limit myself in any Way other than as Having thus described my invention land illustrated-its use, what I now claim and desire t secure by Letters Patent, is:-
