UNITED STATE$ PATENT OEEIoE.
DAVID FOGLEBAOH, OF SUMMIT TOWNSHIP, (ERIE P. O.,) ERIE COUNTY, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-BANDS FOR VEHICL E-HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,719, dated June 11, 1878; application filed April 94,1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID FOGLEBAGH, of Summit township, (Erie P. O.,) in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sand-Band for the Hubs of Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists of a device to be attached to the axle of awagon or other vehicle of such a form as to extend over the inner end of the hub of the wheel in such a manner as to prevent the sand and dirt from entering within the hub upon the journal, and also to prevent the grease from working out upon the axle.
My device is shown in the accompanying drawing as follows: Figure 1 shows an end view of the device, and Fig. 2 shows the de vice in position upon the axle of a vehicle.
In these figures, A is the axle. B is the hub, and O the incasing-band of the device.
The device itself consists of an incasingband, C, and web 0, screw-threaded lugs 01 d, and attaching-nuts D D, together with a cross tie or bar, D.
The general form of my device is that of a clip, except that it has an extending Web, 0, and an overhanging flange, (1. It is made of cast metal-more properly of malleable cast metal. It may be painted, japanned, galvanized, or plated for ornamentation. Fig. 2 shows the manner in which the device is applied. The opening A (shown in Fig. 1) spans the axle A. The overhanging flange or band 0 lies over the inner end of the hub, and the web G protects the end of the hub. In Fig. 2 the device and its use and the office it performs are plainly and fully shown.
My device is intended to be manufactured in various sizes, and to be kept on sale as an article of trade. It may be applied to vehicles already in use, or to new ones in course of construction.
I am aware that sand-bands or caps for the hubs of vehicle-wheels are not new, my invention consisting wholly in the form of construction and mode of attachment. As an example of what has previously been the form of these devices, see patent to Ooleburn &' Stanard, April 14, 1868. By constructing the device as I do, in the form of a clip, it can be used in place of or to supplant the brace and thill-cli ps.
What I claim as new is- As an article of manufacture, the sand-band for the hubs of vehicles herein shown, consisting of 'an overhanging flange, O, a web, 0, and attaching-lugs d (1, formed of one piece of metal, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said DAVID FOGLEBACH, have hereunto set my hand.
- DAVID FOGLEBAGH.
