(Cl. 255-71) This invention relates generally to deep well embodiment herein disclosed. Various changes drilling apparatus and specifically to roller bits. may be made within the scope of the following It has for its general object the provision of a claims. Of the many changes that may be made new and improved bit having large cutters conas to form without change in substance may be structed and arranged to efiiciently out various mentioned the construction of the cutter M in hard formations. two pieces instead of one as-shown.

Water is supplied to the head; and the other of said cutters being arcutters through the opening 3 in the head. The ranged to traverse an annular area of a width bit head has a pair of depending bearing proextending from a point substantially midway bejections i and 5 provided with downwardly opentween the longitudinal axis of said head and the ing slots 6 and i for the reception of the cutter periphery of said head to a point beyond the pins 8 and 9. The cutter pin 8 extends to a poperiphery of said head; said cutters having a sition slightly past the longitudinal axis of the plurality of substantially longitudinal grooves head i and is"inwardly stepped as indicated at extending substantially from end to end through it.
