Description

CHAIR Filed May 3, 1935 Hen r yPl ordmark INVENTOR.
BY [23,; HM L ATTORNEYS.
Patented July 7, 1936 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHAIR Henry P. Nordmark,
signor to American Grand Rapids, Mich., as-
Seating Company, Grand The present invention relates to chairs, particularly such as are used in theatres; and its ob ject is to provide such a chair having an improved back and improved means for mounting the back on its support.
This and any other and more specific objectshereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the chair construction particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the back of a theatre chair and of a portion of its supporting side standards, partially sectioned on a plane corresponding to line I-l of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a sectional view (enlarged) of a portion of the same taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view (enlarged) of portions of the chairs back with connecting and mounting means;
Figure 4 is a sectional line 44 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of a retaining element;
Figure 6 is a front view of the back of a theatre chair illustrating a modified construction;
Figure 7 is a sectional view (enlarged) of a portion of the same taken on line 1-1 of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a view in perspective of the modified retaining element used in the form shown in Figures 6 and 7.
In the drawing is illustrated a theatre chair having a back I mounted on supporting side standards 2 as by threaded means passing through the flanges 3 of these standards, a preferable form of such mounting means being shown in Figures 3 and 4.
This chair back comprises a body or frame, the comparatively rigid forward and rearward sheet members 4, 5, of suitable material as ply wood or the like, these members being fastened together in the relation shown by suitable means as the screws 6. An upholstery sheet 1 of suitable material, as textile fabric, leather or the like, extends in front of said forward member 4 with stuffing indicated at 8 therebetween. The edge portion 9 of this sheet i is turned over the peripheral edge 10 of the forward member 4 and to the position shown wherein it is held or clamped between the frame members 4 and 5.
A rim I I of metal or the like extends around the peripheral edge l2 of frame member 5 and at I3 is turned over its front side and into held engagement with the lugs [4 of the round flat retaining view thereof taken on elements l5 seated in sockets IS in the front or inner side of the rearward member 5, these sockets and elements being adjacent the parallel peripheral edges of said members, all as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, one of said retaining elements being 5 shown in Figure 5.
In the slightly different construction illustrated in Figures 6, 7, and 8, the retaining elements I5 are elongated and are fastened, as by screws IT, on the rear or inner side of the forward member 4, 10 with the edge portion 9 of the upholstery sheet 1 held therebetween. Sockets I6 in the rearward member 5 may be provided to receive these elements I5 In this construction the edge l8 of the rim I I abuts against the projecting outer end l9 of the elements I5 Inasmuch as the edge of the turned over portion I3 of the rim engages under the lugs I4 of the round retaining elements I5 as shown in Figure 2 or under the projectingouter ends l9 of the elongated retaining elements I5 as shown in Figure 7, these retaining elements hold the rim on the peripheral edge l2 of the frame member 5 thus dispensing with nails or the like. The rim in either construction is shown with a rear flange 20 engaging the rear side of member 5.
Preferable means shown in Figures 3 and 4 for mounting the chair back on the standards 2 comprises a nut member 2| whose threaded shank 22 extends into a bore 23 through frame member 5 0 and whose flat head 24 has spurs 25 thrust into the inner or front side of said member. The screw 26 extends through the standards flange 3 and is turned into this nut member to mount the chair back.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of any embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawing or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In a chair back: comparatively rigid forward and rearward sheet members forming the frame of the back; retaining elements held between said members adjacent the parallel edges thereof having forwardly extending lugs; a rim extending around the edge of the rearward member and turned over the front side thereof into engagement with the inner side of said elements; an upholstery sheet in front of the forward member having its edge portion turned over the edge thereof and between said members means for fastening said members together with the edge portion of the upholstery sheet clamped between them.
2. In a chair back: comparatively rigid forward and rearward sheet members forming the frame of the back; retaining elements held between said members adjacent the parallel edges thereof having forwardly extending lugs; a rim extending around the edge of the rearward member and turned over the front side thereof into engagement with the inner side of said elements and having a flange engaging the rear side of the rearward member; an upholstery sheet in front of the forward member having its edge portion turned over the edge thereof and between said members; means for fastening said members together with the edge portion of the upholstery sheet clamped between them.-
3. In a chair back: comparatively rigid forward and rearward sheet members forming the frame of the back one of said members having sockets in its inner side; retaining elements seated in the sockets having forwardly extending lugs; a rim extending around the edge of the rearward member and turned over the front side thereof into engagement with the inner side of said elements; an upholstery sheet in front of the forward member having its edge portion turned over the edge thereof and between said members; means for fastening said members together with the edge portion .of the upholstery sheet clamped between them.
4. In a chair back: comparatively rigidl forward and rearward sheet members forming the frame of the back one of said members having sockets in its inner side; retaining elements seated in the sockets having forwardly extending lugs; a rim extending around the edge of the rearward member and turned over the front side thereof into engagement with the inner side of said elements; an upholstery sheet in front of the forward member having its edge portion turned over the edge thereof and between the retaining elements and'the inner side of the forward member; means for-fastening the retaining elements on the inner side of the forward member with the edge portion of the upholstery sheet held therebetween; means for fastening said members together with the edge portion of the upholstery sheet clamped between them.
5. In a chair back: comparatively rigid forward and rearward sheet members forming the frame of the back, one of said members having circular sockets adjacent the parallel edges of said members; round fiat retaining elements seated in said sockets having forwardly extending lugs; a rim extending around the edge of the rearward member and turned over the front side thereof into engagement with the inner side of said lugs; an upholstery sheet in front of the forward member having its edge portion turned over the edge thereof and between said members; means for fastening said members together with the edge portion of the upholstery sheet clamped between them. a
