This invention relates to conduits especially adapted for the construction of sewers and the like, and has for the primary object the provision of conduit units so constructed that interfitting joints are provided therebetween and each composed of separable walls having interfitting or locking joints therebetween, thereby providing a knockdown unit which may be readily assembled when laying or constructing a sewer rendering the handling of the units comparatively easy.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation illustrating a conduit unit constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line view taken on the line 7 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating the top wall of a conduit unit.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the bottom Wall of a conduit unit.
Figure '7 is a perspective view illustrating one of the side walls of a conduit unit.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a conduit constructed of reinforced concrete or similar material and is composed of a series of units arranged in endwise relation when constructing a. sewer or like device. The units interfit with one another when assembled to reduce to a minimum leakage between the units. E-ach unit is composed of top and bottom walls 2 and 3 and side walls 4. The walls are provided with inner longitudinally arrange-d thickened or stepped faces 5 so that when said walls are assembled the faces thereof interfit and thereby reduce leakage between the walls to a minimum. The faces 5 on the units 2 and 3, inward of the edges of said faces, (a distance equalling that of the thickness of the reduced edges of the side walls 4) are formed with ribs 5 whose outer walls are straight but whose inner or confronting walls are angularly .dis-
posed. The angle faces of these ribs prevent the formation of any straight corners in the conduit in which dirt may accumulate and their importance will, it is thought, be considered. The inner faces of the top and bottom walls are recessed, as shown at 6, to increase the area of the bore of the unit so that a greater flow of water through the unit may be accommodated.
One end of each unit is formed with an extension 1, the faces of which are angularly related while the opposite end of the unit is recessed with the walls thereof angularly related so that the extension of one unit may fit tightly in a recess of the adjacent unit.
The side walls above the lower edges are provided with openings or passages 9 for the purpose of permitting water which may accumulate about the unit to pass into the bore thereof. The arrangement of the openings in the side walls is such that the passage or flow of water through the conduit unit will draw accumulated water from the exterior of the unit into the passage or bore thereof.
The walls have embedded therein reinforcing bars l0, which bars are preferably arranged longitudinally of said walls for the purpose of providing thereto maximum strength.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
A conduit comprising a unit including separable flat walls each having stepped faces, said faces of the top and bottom walls adapted to fit the faces of the side walls when said walls are assembled and which side and bottom walls are respectively of the same width and length and thickness, said side walls having water or sewage inlet openings adjacent to the longitudinal edges thereof, said walls at one end of the unit being cut away to form a recess having angularly disposed walls, said walls at the other end of the unit being cut away to form an extension having angularly related faces to fit the walls of a recess of an adjacent unit, said top and bottom walls having longitudinally extending integral ribs adjacent their stepped faces to receive the side walls thereagainst, and the outer faces of said ribs being beveled to prevent the formation of debris in the corners of the conduit and the LUTHER BIETZ.
