Description

June 23, 1936. D. MARINSKY SEPARABLE FASTENER Filed Aug. 17, 1.932
I N V EN TOR. 0/: W5 MAR/N670 Patented June 23, 1936 PATENT OFFICE SEPARABLE FASTENER Davis Marinsky, New York, N. Y., assignor to Whitehall Patents Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application August 1'1, 1932, Serial No. 629,094
12 Claim.
This invention relates to separable fasteners of the type employing two stringers, and a coupling member or slider slidably engaging the stringers in coupling and uncoupling the same; and the object of the invention is'to provide stringers for fasteners of the class specified with a mounting and/or finishing tape so constructed as to cover one side face ofthe stringer and part of the coupling elements thereon so that in coupling the stringers together the coupling elements will be concealed from at least one side face of the stringer; a further object being to provide a finishing strip of the class specified having a longitudinal line of openings through which the coupling elements of the stringer are adapted to pass in mounting the strip upon the stringer, the strip being provided'with a'fiange portion ad- Jacent the openings formed therein adapted to overlie the coupling elements and to be held in close proximity thereto in the flexing of the stringers; a. further object being to provide a strip of the class defined wherein the flange portion is formed by folding the strip upon itself and stitching the folded parts together to form a neat and finished edge for said flange portion and to support the flange portion adjacent the coupling elements; afurther object being to provide a finishing strip of the class described, which is adapted to cover one or both sides of the mounting strip of the stringer, and further wherein the finishing strip may be composed of one or more elements formed in the manner defined; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a fastening device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a part of a complete fastener made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the position of the parts before the final stitching operation.
Fig. '4 is a transverse, sectional view through a modified form of strip which I may employ.
Fig. is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing another modification; and,
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing'another modification and showing only part of the construction.
It will be understood that my invention is applicabie to stringersof fasteners of the class under consideration, regardless of the specific type or form of coupling elements employed.
For the purpose of illustrating one use of my invention, I have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing two stringers iii, Ilia, each stringer being of the same construction and including interengaging coupling elements I I, I la, on the respective strips which are coupled and uncoupled by a. suitable slider l2 of conventional or any desired form and construction having a finger piece l3, the latter being movable longitudinally of the slider on a web or rib M.
The stringers I0, Ina are of similar construction and the brief description of one will apply to the other. mounting tape l5 having an enlarged beaded edge portion I So upon which the coupling elements ii are mounted by compressing the yoke ends of said elements thereon or in any other manner commonly known in the art.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I employ a supplemental mounting and finishing strip l6 having a series of openings formed longitudinally thereof as at I! by removing a number of the longitudinal threads or by preforming apertures or openings in the strip in accordance with conventional methods and as disclosed in prior patents granted to me, Number 18,406, Reissue, dated April 5, 1932 and Number 1,852,176, dated April 5, 1932, of which my present invention constitutes an improvement.
In the structure shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the openings ii are formed substantially centrally of the strip to provide an outer facing portion I61: and an inner facing portion 16b disposed on the top and under surfaces of the mounting strip l5 as will be apparent, the coupling elements ll being passed through the openings I'I as clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 8 of the drawing. This disposes the transverse threads or the body of the strip between the openings between the coupling elements II and upon the bead i511.
Adjacent one side of that part of the strip having the openings l1 therein is formed a projecting flange portion It! by folding the strip upon itself and stitching the same as at l9. In mounting the Each stringer consisting of a strip 16 upon the stringer, the flange I8 is disposed on the outer surfaces of the coupling elements Ii and is held'in contact therewith by arranging the stitching i9 adjacent the outer edge portion of the bead I51: and in stitching the side I portions l6a and lib together and to the strip 15 as at 29. In this connection, it will be understood that the fiange portion l8 may be of any desired width but is preferably of such width as to cover the coupling elements i I so as to dispose the flanges it of each stringer l0, Ilia in abutting relation with respect to each other when the stringers are coupled together as seen at a: in Fig.
1 of the drawing. It will thus be apparent that the outer edges of the flanges i8 are disposed inwardly of the outer edges of the coupling parts or interengaging members of said elements.
Instead of using the side portion liib as a facing for the strip l5, said side of the finishing strip may be terminated adjacent the coupling. elements ii in the manner illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing, the side l6b being made narrower and preferably folded upon itself and stitched to the mounting strip i5 and the side lid on the stitching 20a. This will leave the comer and edge portions 2| of the coupling elements H exposed on the inner surface of the stringer for The flnishingstrip engagement with the slider. in the structure shown in Fig. 6 will also include the flange portion l8 as in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
In Fig.4. of the drawing-I have shown a slight modification wherein a finishing strip 22 is employed, and this strip consists of separate parts 23 and 24 forming the inner and outer side portions of the strip, the part 23 being similar'to the side I64: and the part 24 similar to the side lib. One side edge of the part 23 is folded upon itself to form a flange i8a similar to the flange i8 and the adjacent side edge of the part 24 is also folded upon itself and arranged within the fold of the part 23 and is stitched to said part as seen at iSa, the part '24 having the openings 51a formed therein adjacent the stitching so that the resulting finishing strip will in all general appearances, appear to be the same shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
Aside from reinforcing the flange I8 and the adjacent parts of the finishing strip, the structure shownin Fig. 4 also makes it possible to use strip parts 23, 24 of different texture and/or color or both. For example, it may be desirable to have one type of strip on the outer surface of the stringer and another type on the inner surface thereon. This also applies to the structure shown in Fig. 5 which differs from that shown in Fig. 4 simply in eliminating the fold at the inner end of the strip part 24a, the latter merely resting upon the folded flange portion l8b of the strip part 23a and secured thereto by stitchings Mb. The part 24a has the openings I'ib formed therein.
In the diiferent forms of finishing strips herein disclosed, it will be apparent that these strips may be contrasting in color as well as texture to the mounting strip i5 so as to facilitate the manufacture of the stringers with the coupling elements thereon on a large scale and the storage of the same for supply, the latter being made by applying to the stringers strips of colors and textures suitable for the difl'erent merchandise upon which the fastening devices or units are employed as clearly set forth in my prior Patent Number 1,852,176. In this connection, it will be apparent that the fastener units are stitched or otherwise secured to the merchandise independent of the stitchings 20,- 20a. It will also be understood that the separate side portions of the finishing strips may be of any desired width to partially or wholly cover the opposed side surfaces of the mounting strip l5.
In all cases, the apertured portions i1, I'Ia, Nb of the finishing strip serve to support the flanges i8, i8a, i8b in juxtaposition to orin constant abutting relation with the adjacent surfaces of the coupling elements eliminating any necessity of stitching the finishing strip to the bead l5a at said elements. In this connection, it will be understood that the stitching operation at l9,
as that 19a, isb is performed in the finishing strip prior to its attachment to the stringers. It will be understood'that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into eifect, that I am not necessarily limited to these details, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
