Description
Patented June 23, 1936 UNITED STATES PRESSURE COOKER Lawrence L. Ludington, Muncic, Ind., assignor to Bali Brothers Company, Muncie, lnd., ,a corporation of Indiana Application May 23,
3 Claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a sealing closure for pressure vessels, such for in stance, as pressure cookers, the construction being I such as to be readily placed in pressure retaining association with a container and as readily removable therefrom, the mechanism being of such character that retraction of the clamping elements will automatically lift the closure from its seat.
Fig. 1 is a radial section showing the parts in closed position;
Fig. 2 a similar view showing the parts in cover-lifted position; and v Fig. 3 a fragmentary plan of the mouth of the 15 receptacle.
In the drawing, l 0 indicates a container having a mouth I I subtended by an annular cover seat l2. The mouth of the receptacle is defined by a flange l0 perforated at spaced circumferential 20 intervals, as indicated at l3, and provided, at the root of each perforation'l3, with a groove l4, parallel with the axis of the mouth, for a puri pose which will appear.-
The cover is a circular structure 20, preferably 25 a. hollow casting, as indicated, provided with a seat 2| adapted to mate with seat l2.
Cover 2|), at circumferentially spaced intervals corresponding to the spacing of perforations l3 and the grooves I4, is radially perforated at 22 80 and projected through each perforation is the tip 23 of a locking pin 24, said tip being adapted to enter and cooperate with a perforation l3.
Threaded upon-threads 3| is a thimble 35 provided with an outwardly extended circumferential flange 35 atits lower end, and sleeved over said 45 thimble'and resting upon said flange is a bell 31 provided at its lower end with a circumferential flange 38 upon which the inner-ends of pins 24 rest. Sleeved over bell 31 and resting thereon is a larger bell 33, the lower edge of which projects 50 into the several transverse slots 25 of pins 24,
thereby retaining said pins between the two bells.
Sleeved over the upper part of thimble 35 is a sleeve 40 which rests upon bell 33 and which is non-rotatively secured to thimble 35 by one or 55 more suitable temper screws 4|. Sleeve 40 is part 1935, Serial No. 23,031
of a handle structure 42 by means of which thimble 35 maybe rotated. Bells 3'! and 39 may either rotate with thimble 35 and elements 40-42 or may remain non-rotative relative to pins 24.
When pins 24 are in their upper or released 5 positions, as shown in the full lines in Fig. 1, their ends project radially from the circumference of cover 20 and may be brought into registry with the several slots |3 by downward movement in grooves l4 until seat 2| rests upon seat l2, l0 whereupon the cover is turned through a short I angle to bring the projecting ends of pins 24 beneath the upper walls l3 of perforations l3. Thereupon turning of the thimble 35 in appropriate direction depresses bells 31 and 39, consequently depressing the inner'ends of pins 24, the said pins, near their outer ends fulcruming upon adjacent portions of the cover structure and engaging the upper walls 13' of perforations 13 to hold the cover structure in seated position upon seat I2.
After a structure of this kind has been in operation for some time under pressure, there is a tendency of the cover to stick upon seat l2- Reverse rotation of thimble 35 operates, through flange 38, to positively, lift the inner ends of pins 24, whereupon the tips 23, at their lowermost portions, engage the lower walls |3"- of slots l3, as indicated in Fig. '2, and the pins engage abutments 20' of the cover 20 so that the cover is positively lifted from its seat.
When the seat 2| has been forced from seat l2, the cover structure may be readily rotated to bring the projected ends 23 and pins 24 into alignment with the grooves l4, whereupon the cover structure may be readily lifted from the container.
-1 claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a container having an open mouth provided with a circumferential series of spaced pin pockets, of a cover structure provided with a circumferential series of radially projecting pins, the projected end of each of which is adapted to alternately engage the upper and lower walls of one of said pockets and the cover 45 structure providing a radial guide for each pin with intermediate oppositely disposed fulcrums for the associated pin, a'threaded axial post carried by said cover, and a handle structure threaded upon said post, said handle structure comprising a pair of elements between which the inner ends of said pins are projected. v
2. The combination, with a container having an open mouth provided with a circumferential series of spaced pin pockets, of a cover structure provided with a circumierential series 01 radially projecting pins, the projected end of each -01. which is adapted to alternately engage the upper and lower walls of one of said pockets and the cover structure providing a radial guide for each pin with intermediate oppositely disposed iulcrums for the associated pin. a threaded axial post carried by said cover, and a handle structure threaded upon said post, said handle structure comprising means for positively engaging the inner ends of the pins, whereby the handle structure may shiftvsaid inner ends axially of the cover structure in opposite directions.
'3. The combination, with a container having an open mouth provided with a circumferential series of spaced pin pockets, of a cover structure provided with a circumierential series of radially projecting pins, the projected end of each of which is adapted to alternately engage the vupper and lower walls of one of said pockets and the cover structure providing a radial guide for each pin with intermediate oppositely disposed tulcrums for the associated pin, a threaded axial post carried by said cover, and a handle structure threaded upon said post, said handle structure comprising an internally threaded sleeve, a main body telescoped over said sleeve, a connection integrating said sleeve and main body, a pair of bells interposed between said sleeve and main body, one underlying the inner ends of all of the pins and the other overlying said inner ends in transverse slots in said pins.
