ENLARGEMENT APPARATUS WITH AUTOMATIC FOCUSING DEVICE Filed Feb. 16, 1955 10 k M y 3 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 9, 1936 UNITED STATES ENLABGEMENT APPARATUS WITH AUTO- MATIC FOCUSING- DEVICE Christian Luz, Wetzlar, Germany, assignor to Ernst Leitz G. in, b. IL, Wetzlar, Germany Application February 16, 1935, Serial No. 6,893 In Germany February 19, 1934 1 Claim. (01. 88-24) This invention relates to improvements in enlargement apparatus, and it is the principal object of my invention to provide the apparatus with a means for effecting an automatic focusing by the arrangement of a pair of cams alternately engaging a pin according to its position in openings suitably arranged in the objective carrier.
Another object of my invention is the provisiori of an enlargement apparatus equipped with an adjustable lever arm system in the turning point of which the two cams are so arranged as to alternately engage a pin according t6 its changing positions in the objective carrier.
Still another object of my invention is the provision of an enlargement apparatus in which the pin to be alternately engaged by the cams is displaceableinto one or the other recess in the objective carrier which is connected to the bellows part of the apparatus by means of a spring. A further object of my invention is the provision of an enlargement apparatus equipped with a standard on which a holder or bracket for the lever arms is vertically displaceable between two stop pins and may be locked to the standard in any of its adjusted positions.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of an enlargement apparatus of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction yet durable and highly eflicient in operation.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, andwill then be more specifically defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this dislosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an enlargement apparatus equipped with an automatic focusing device constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view thereof.
As illustrated, on a standard 5 erected on a suitable base a holder bracket 1 is vertically adjustable between the stop pins 8 and 9, and the bracket may be locked in any of its adjusted positions by suitable clamping means. A pair of parallel lever arms '6 spaced from one another are secured at one of their ends to the holder bracket 1, while the other ends of the lever arms are secured to a bracket on the enlargement ap paratus. If a copying board is placed upon the base the holder will engage the upper stop pin 9, while upon the removal of the board it will engage the lower stop pin 8. A spring I2 is secured to the holder I at one end and to the bracket on the apparatus at its other end to cushion the" holder.
The. enlargement apparatus is equipped with I a bellows part 4 and objective l0 and a spring I l connecting the objective carrier with the bellows part.
A pair of cams, l and 2, are pivotally attached at their upper parts to a bracket at the-turning point of the lever arms on the apparatus frame 5 and engage with their free ends a pin 3 at the end of a stem which may be inserted into suitable recesses in the objective carrier to be alter nately engaged by said free cam ends either by cam I in its upper position or by cam 2 in its lower position. The two cams l and 2 serve the purpose to allow changes in the focus according to their respective engagement of the pin 3 when either in the upper or lower opening of the objective carrier effecting a change in the distance of the lens from the object by suitably regulating the extension limit of the bellows 4 and holding the same in its adjusted position.
The operation of my apparatus will be readil understood from the above description by having simultaneously reference to the drawing, and it will be clear that the change inposition of the roller 3 to be engaged by either cam I or earn 2 will provide for a desired focusing.
It will be understood that I havedescribed and shown the preferred form of my invention only as one example of the many possible ways to practically construct the same and that I may make such'changes in its general arrangement and in the construction of its minor details as come 30 within the scope of the appended claim without departure from the spirit of my invention and the principles involved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
An enlargement apparatus comprising an objective carrier having two spaced openings, and a bellows, a standard, a holder bracket adjustably arranged on said standard between two stop pins,
means to lock said bracket in any of its adjusted positions, a system of parallel spaced levers, having one of their ends attached to said bracket and the other to a bracket on the enlargement apparatus, a spring to cushion the movements of said levers, a pair of cams of varying size having their upper parts pivotally secured at the turning point of said lever system, and a pin adapted to be placed into one and the other of the openings in the objective carrier to be alternately engaged by one or the other of said cams to vary. the focus by alternating the.distance between the objec-- tive and the object to be enlarged according to the position of the pin in one or the other of the openings in the objective carrier and. its engage- 5 ment by one or the other of said cams, and a spring for limiting the bellows extension. CHRISTIAN LUZ.
