This invention relates to a novel fill box and nozzle or spout for the delivery of liquids to a container or dispensing unit, and has for one of its objects to provide a device of the character which will allow the nozzle or spout to operate, open, close and lock a closure valve within a fill box and which valve must be closed before the nozzle or spout can beremoved from the fill box and which cannot be opened unless spout or nozzle of correct design and construction is used-thereby preventing erroneous filling of a tank or container and preventing the fire hazard present in the open type fill box used in conjunction with the delivery of petroleum products and prevents water or foreign substances from entering the tank or container. The opening in the fill box into which the nozzle or spout is inserted, has a definite series of vertical and horizontal apertures into which the bits of the nozzle or spout enter and slide until contact is made with levers, which upon the turning of the nozzle or spout, with bits attached, in one direction unlocks and opens the valve in the fill box and'upon turning the nozzle in the opposite direction closes and locks the valve in a closed position. The location of the apertures and bits may be arranged so as to allow many different series and inter-series. These arrangements allow a given series of vertical apertures to be divided into different combinations so as to prevent the mixture of fluids such as oils, gasoline or other liquids having different gravities or flash points, or other characteristics, which are not intended to be mixed or contaminated. The nozzle or spout with its bits, make a tight connection with the fill box, which is grounded to tank or container, forms a means for carrying off static electricity which may be present or generated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the nature of which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the design, construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views; 10 indicates the entire fill box, Illa the upper half of fill box, lilb the lower half of fill box, I00 screws used for joining upper and lower half of fill box, II is the ground. The nozzle l3 equipped with bits l9 and and ring l3a attached to a hose 2| by a lock 22, making a union, a cap M, with a hinged pivot [5, provides for the closing cap whenthe fill box is not in use. The bore IS with its side walls having horizontal apertures I8 to permit rotation of bits l9, which have entered through apertures ll, bits 20 rotating in cut out, 23, of upper portion of fill box ma, contained, in cut out 23, are the forked bars 24. Bits l9, are guides and control devices which entering aperture l8 and rotating therein with bits 23, in cut out 23, of section Illa act as tumblersvin a lock. Forked bars 24 to receive bits 23, pivoting on pivots 25 severally connected with bars 23, 33, 45, 31, connecting bar 29 is connected with a bar 24 and bar 33 pivoting on 3| forming a lock and stop 32 to bar 36 and 33, a bar 24 connects with a bar 31 to a bar 38 having a pivot 39 forming a stop and lock to bell crank 40 and bar 4|. The bits 23 moving in cut out 23, engage forked bar 24 moving upon pivots 25 by rotating nozzle l3 in one direction moving bars 24 'in one plane on pivots 25 releasing stops or looks numbers 33' and 38 to allow free motion of bars numbers 35, 36, 43, 45, 42, 4i and of bar 33, and bell cranks 43 and 4E]. The horizontal movement of bits 20, engaged with forked lever 24, pivoted on pivots 25, moves the discs 23, 27, 28 pivoted on 26a, 21a, 23a, which discs radially opens and closes the hollow body by reversing the rotary movement of the nozzle l3, equipped with bits, 20, in the following manner. The discs 23, 2'1, 28 are attached respectively to bars 35, 41 and 45. Bar is attached to bar 33- and bell cranks 43 and 43 pivoted on pivots, a and 44 with connecting link 45 from bell crank 43 to disc 23, bars 35 and 4i act as connecting links for discs 23 and 27. To open, shut and lock the hollow body the following is the operation using the aforegoing figures and parts. Insert the nozzleor spout l3, equipped with pins l9 and 20 into hollow body of upper portion of fill box so that the bits I9 and 20 enter their correct; slots I8 and the cut out portion of the fill box 23, rotate the nozzle or spout engaged in fulcrumated bars 24, releasing looks or stops 32 at bell crank 40, through the movement on pivots of bars 29 and 30 and 3'! and 33 through the pivots 3| and 39. The continuedmovement of the nozzle rotates the bits, radiallyoperates' lever 24, which is connected to disc 28 by bar 46 and causes disc to slide radially to uncover a portion of bore l6. At the same time disc 21 is radially operated by the movement of bell cranks 43 and 4B which are operated by connecting bars 45 and 42, moving bar 4| to which disc 21 is attached and pivoted at 21a. The movement of this linkage causes disc 21 to slide-radially uncovering a portion of bore I6. Simultaneously, disc 26 pivoted at 260 is actuated by connecting bars 35 and 36 and swivel 33, pivoted at 34 and operated by radial pressure from lever 24 thereby causing disc 26 to slide radially and uncover a portion of bore I6. The" radial action of the three discs 26', 21, 28 creates an opening as shown in Fig. 3. The reverse operation closes and locks the discs as is shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. we have a modification of Figures 3 and 4 in the use of a single disc in place of multiple discs, for the purpose of closing the hollow body. The locking, moving and closing devise is identical in principle, using the bars 32' with pivots 33 engaging in cut out portion 23, bits 20, bars 34 attached at points 35 to disc which pivots on pivots 3|, so that the rotary motion of nozzle [3, with bits 20 attached rotates disc in cut out 23, opening and closing the hollow body forming a valve.
The stops 26b, 21b, 28b are to prevent discs from travelling further than the pre-determined distance. 4''! is an air vent, 48 is a drain vent, 49 is a hollow body.
What is claimed is z 1. A fill box adapted to be associated with a liquid receptacle and comprising a liquid conduit, valve means spaced from the inlet end of the conduit for controlling the flow of liquid therethrough, and means for positively locking said valve in closed position, said means having a releasing lever mounted to swing about an axis parallel to the axis of said conduit, said lever be"- ing accessible only to a member insertable through said conduit.
2. A fill box or the like including a body portion having acylindrical fluid passage, a valve mounted for movement laterally with respectto the passage, valve operating means accessible only to means projecting into the passage, a cylindrical nozzle extending within said passage, said nozzle having a laterally projecting bit op-' eratively engaging said operating means so that the valve is opened when said nozzle is revolved in one direction and closed when the nozzle is revolved in the opposite direction, and means preventing removal of the nozzle except when the valve is closed.
3. A fill box or the like including a body portion having a fluid passage, a valve mounted for bodily movement laterally with respect to the passage to open or close the same, valve oper ating means positioned wholly without the pas sage and accessible only to an element inserted into the passage, a nozzle within the passage and having a portion in operative engagement with the .valve operating means, said nozzle being movable relatively to the body to' cause said means to open and close the valve, and means for preventing removal of said nozzle from the passage except when the valve is in passage closing position.
4. A fill box or the like including a body portion having a fluid passage, a valve for opening and closing the same, valve operating means supported independently of the valve and operatively connected thereto, said means being inaccessible save to an element inserted through said passage from the inlet end, a fluid supply nozzle within the passage and having a part detachably engagingv the valve operating means, said nozzle being movable relatively to the body to cause said means to open and close the valve, and means for preventing removal of said nozzle from the passage except when the valve is in passage closing position.
5. The combination set forth in claim 4 in which means is provided for automatically locking the valve in closed position, which locking means is operatively connected to the valve operating means so that it may be released when the valve operating means is actuated so as to open the valve.
6. A fill box or the like including a body portion having a cylindrical fluid passage, the wall of the passage being longitudinally slotted, a cylindrical nozzle within the passage, said nozzle having a laterally projecting bit adjacent the end thereof, a valve, and valve operating means supported independently of the valve and detachably engaged by said bit and adapted to be actuated thereby when said nozzle and bit are revolved about the axis of said passage, the bit being adapted to move through said slot when the nozzle is inserted into said passage or withdrawn therefrom.
7. A fill box or the like including a body having a fluid passage, a nozzle within the passage and rotatable about the axis of the passage, a valve beyond the end of the nozzle for controlling fluid flow through the passage, valve operating means supported independently of the nozzle and detachably connected to the nozzle, for opening and closing the valve, which means is actuated when the nozzle is revolved, means preventing removal of the nozzle from the passage when the valve is open, and means for automatically locking the valvein closed position, which last means is also detachably connected to the nozzle to be operated thereby.
8. A fill box of the like including a body portion having a fluid conduit, a valve movably supported upon said body at a point remote from the inlet end thereof and adapted to be moved to open or close said fluid conduit, a portion of said conduit between said valve and the'inlet end thereof being adapted to receive a filling nozzle, and valve operating means mounted upon the said body to one side of said conduit so as to be normally inaccessible through said conduit save to a member projecting laterally from a filling nozzle inserted therein.
9. A fill boxor the like including a body portion having afluid conduit, a valve movably supported upon said body at a point remote from the inlet end thereof so as to be movable into the conduit to close the same or wholly out of the conduit to fully open the same, a portion of said conduit between said valve and the inlet end thereof being adapted to receive a filling nozzle, and valve operating' means mounted upon said body to one side of said conduit so as to be normally inaccessible through said conduit save to a member projecting laterally from a filling nozzle inserted therein.
10. A fill box or the like including a body portion having a fluid conduit with a slot formed in the wall thereof, said slot extending in a generally longitudinal direction from the inlet end of the conduit to a point relatively remote therefrom, valve operating means mounted upon said body adjacent the inner termination of said slot and to one side of said conduit, said means having a movably mounted part normally positioned to be engaged by an element passed inwardly through said slot and adapted to be moved by a force transmitted thereto by such element to thereby actuate said means, and a valve, said valve being operatively connected to said means so as to be actuated thereby to open or close the conduit.
