My invention relates to improvement in vibrators and particularly that type of vibrator used inpower units for supplying necessary power current to radios and devices oi this character.
One of the objects of my invention is to pro.- vide a, vibrator electromagnetically operated in which the various parts of the vibrator are sov constructed that they may bel readily and accurately assembled. y 10 Inr certain types of vibrators the structure comprises a vibrating reed 'having disposed on opposite sides thereof disk-like contacts, which disk-like contacts are adapted during the vibration of the reed to engage similarly constructed disk-like contacts mounted on resilient ngers. It is quite essential, from the standpoint of long life and accurate operativeness, that these contacts be correctly and accurately aligned so that the entiresurface of such contacts will engage 2o during the vibration of the reed with the entire surface of the remaining contacts, and it is one of the objects of my invention to provide a structure wherein this alignment ymay be ob'- tained with a minimum of assembly cost.
Other objects and advantages of my inven-` tion will appear more fully hereinafter in the appended speciilcations and claims.

In the structures illustrated, referring more particularly to the structures illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, I provide an elongated base which may be formed ot cast iron yto provide a vertical member I and a horizontally-disposed member-2, ex-
tending at right angles to the vertical member I and adapted tocarry the electromagnet. `The vibrating reed 6 at its base is provided with a squared opening Il and each of the spring .y iingers `I and 8 has at its base an enlarged squared portion I5 provided with a squared l opening I6. Likewise, the vibrating reed 8 and the spring fingers I and 8 attheir bases are provided with integrally-extending teats I1 to which suitable conductor wires may be attached. The assembly screw provides `lthe mounting for the vibrating arm or nger 6 as well as a mounting for the spring fingers I and 8 and in order that these parts should be properly insulated from one another the mounting screw I9 is surrounded by a bushing 20 and to insurethe proper alignment of `the ngers and reed this bushing is made square so that its lower end will socket into the squared recess I8' and so that the bushing will enter the squared openings I 4 and I6 in the reed and ngers. In assembly, in the specic structure illustrated, I provide adjacent the base, iirst an insulating washer 2l; then a steel or metal washer 22; then the vibrating reed 1. On top of this reed I place a steel spacer washer 23 and' an insulating washer 24. Next is arranged a steel washer 25, or, as a matter of fact, two steel washers 25 between which is mounted the vibrating reed 6 and in contact with the vibrating reed is a conductor plate 26 having a tail 21. Next is placed an insulating washer 23, a steel washer 29, and between the steel washer 29 and a second steel washer 30 is arranged the spring linger 3. On top of this steel washer is mounted an insulating washer 3 I, and on top of this is a clamping washer 32 between which and the nut 33 is adapted to be clamped the tail piece 21. These various washers, both metal and insulated are preferably square and all are provided with square openings adapted to receive thesquared bushing 20. By the above-described mounting it is apparent that the vibrating reed and associated spring fingers are all perfectly insulated from one another by the bushings and insulating washers so that there is no danger of electrical contact between these members. It is desirable in the particular structure illustrated that the vibrating reed should be grounded on the frame or base and to this end the conductor washer with the tail piece 21 is provided, the tail piece being brought out and secured beneath the nut 33 which, it will be seen through the screw, is in contact with the frame or base portion l. Suitable leads are taken oil. from the diiierent teats I1 on the diierent members for connection to the suitable conductors through which the current is adapted to pass, and in order that these leads may be more or less rigidly held relative to the teats, these leads areV brought in through holes formed in the base'member I. It is quite apparent from thisassembly that the squared bushing locked in its position in its squared socket maintains the spring ngers as well as the vibrating reed in absolute and correct alignment to maintain the contacts in correct aligned position and that this alignment is obtained more or less automatically in the assembly operation.
As beforestated, the base is formed of cast iron to give a large mass of iron in the magnetic circuit of the electromagnet, and the squared socket for the bushing 20 is cast in the base at the time of its formation.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have shown an electromagnet of the same substantial construction as that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that in this structure, in order to increase the mass of iron, I have provided at each end a pair of horizontal arms 2 and 2a and these arms instead of being substantially square or rectangular as in the structure illustrated in Figs. l and 2, preferably` take somewhat the form oi' discs. 'Ihis structure is mounted on a metallic base 34 provided with plug-in prongs 35 extending through openings in the base and secured to an insulating disc 36 mounted in the base. This base is provided with an annular iiange 31 vadapted to receive a tubular casing 38 and interposed between the bottom of the base and the vibrator Ais suitable sound-deadening material 39 which may be of sponge rubber' or felt or other desired material. Likewise, the casing or tube 38 is lined with sound-deadening material4 39' and similar sound-deadening material 40 is interposed between the top of the casing and the top of the vibrator. This provides a structure which may be plugged in a suitable receptacle and by which any vibrations set up during the operation of the vibrator are absorbed to prevent noise or interference where the device is used in radio construction.
In Fig. 7 I have illustrated one application of my vibrator for converting direct to alternating current. In this figure I have illustrated a transformer wherein the secondary 4I constitutes the power output. The primary 42 is connected intermediate of its ends with a power supply 43. The opposite ends o! the primary are connected respectively to the ngers 1 and 8. 'Ihe electromag netic winding has one side connected to the power 15 supply 43 and the opposite side connected to the finger 1, while the vibrating reed 6 is connected to one side of the power supply 43. Under these circumstances when circuit is closed through the electromagnetic winding the reed will be attracted 20 in a direction to close the circuit through one portion of the primary winding 42 and at the same time close a short circuit through the electro magnetic winding. This will, of course, imma diately release the amature edge of the vibrating reed, permitting the reed. which has been stressed, to vibrate in the opposite direction, closing the circuit through the opposite side of the primary winding in a reverse direction.

In a circuit-controlling device, the combination with a base having an extension at one end extending at right angles to said base, of an electromagnet mounted on said extension having a core extending parallel with the base and provided with a pole face substantially at right angles to said base, a mounting post extending from said base, an irregularly shaped socket formed in saicl base and surrounding said post and having one wall thereof parallel to the core face of said magnet, an irregularly shaped bushing surrounding said post and having a bottom portion shaped to conform to and seat in said socket, a plurality of contact carrying members mounted on said post having irregularly shaped openings to receive said bushing, one of said contact carrying members having an armature on its end, terminating adjacent to and parallel with said core face, and means for securing said contact carrying members on said post.

In a circuit-controlling device, the combination with a base having a right angle extension lat one end, of an electromagnet mounted on said n nation with a base having an extension projectpost extending from said base substantially at right angles thereto, a rectangularly shaped socket formed in said base and surrounding said post and having one wall parallel with said core face, a rectangularly shaped bushing surrounding said post and having one end seated in said socket, a plurality of contact carrying members mounted on said post and parallel with the base and having rectangular shaped openings to receive said bushings. and an armature carried by one of said contact carrying members having an edge portion arranged parallel with and in close proximity to said core face.

In a circuit-controlling device, the combination with a base having a pair of extensions at its opposite ends projecting at right angles to said base, an electromagnet mounted on one of said extensions and having a core extending parallel with said base having a pole face substantially at right angles to said base, a supporting post extending from said base parallel with said extensions, an irregularly-shaped socket formed in one face of said base, an irregularly-shaped bushing surrounding said post and having its lower end shaped to conform to and seat in said socket, a vibrating reed and a pair of contactcarrying fingers arranged on opposite sides of said reed mounted on said post and having irregularly-shaped openings to receive said bushing, and an armature on the end of said reed terminating adjacent to and parallel with the pole face of said electromagnet.
