J AR OPENER Filed July 1, 1935 J 1 1415676 A yaaer ATTORNEY Patented June 2, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a jar opener and more especially to a jar wrench.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the cap or cover to a jar, can or the like which is held fast thereon can be released for the opening of the jar, can or the like without excessive labor on the part of a person, the wrench being susceptible of adjustment so that it will fit varying sizes of caps, covers or the like for containers.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the same locks itself upon a cover, cap, lid or the like for a jar, can or the like so that on the turning of the wrench the said jar, can or the like can be opened with dispatch and ease.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, which is simple in construction, readily and easily operated, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in its operation, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jar having a screw cover or cap showing the wrench constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the wrench showing diagrammatically the lid or cover gripped thereby.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a jar or a container such as a glass jar or the like and B the screw lid or cover therefor secured in place.
The wrench constituting the present invention comprises a fiat bar-like shank 5 preferably made from metalcarrying at one end a handle 6 and this bar constitutes a lever. At the other end of the bar 5 is arranged a stationary jaw 1, it being offset from the face next thereto of the bar 5 and at the inner transverse edge are biting teeth 8 for gripping engagement with the peripheral edge of a circular lid or cover B when screwed onto the body A of the container, jar or the like.
Slidably fitted with the bar 5 is a movable jaw 9 it having a cam extension I0 formed with gripping teeth II at its inner edge, these being disposed in an inwardly directed arc while at one end edge of the extension is a finger rest l2. The finger rest I2 as formed on the jaw 9 is directly rearwardly of and at an angle to the toothed cam as provided on this jaw. The movable jaw 9 has riveted or otherwise fastened thereto a. loop member l3 which embraces, the bar 5 for slidably connecting the jaw 9 therewith and suspending it from the same side of this bar as the stationary bar I.
The jaw l is preferably made fast to the bar 5 by rivets I4.
In the use of the wrench the bar 5 is placed crosswise with respect to the top of the cover or lid B so that the jaw 1 will grip this lid or cover and likewise the movable jaw 9 will be shifted on the bar 5 to have the cam extension 10 grip the lid or cover diametrically opposite the engagement of the jaw l therewith. Then by pressing the fingers of the hand of a user of the wrench against the seat I2 the teeth ll, of the cam extension ID will bite into the lid or cover and also the teeth 8 of the jaw I will similarly bite into this lid or cover, then by a turning movement of the lever constituted by the bar 5 the loop member l3 will be caused to angularly shift and bind against opposite side edges of the bar 5 to prevent the slipping of the jaw 9 and thus the lid or cover B can be unscrewed or removed from the container A with ease and dispatch and without requiring excessive strain or labor on the part of the user of the wrench.
The wrench is susceptible of self-adjustment to accommodate itself to varying diameters of lids or covers for containers and is serviceable for the loosening or unscrewing of the metallic cap of fruit cans or jars.
The cam extension I0 is projected laterally to one side of the bar 5 so that the teeth II will be caused to grip the lid or cover on the turning or swinging of the bar 5 by pressure applied to the handle 6 at one end of the latter.
What is claimed is:
A jar opener comprising a flat elongated bar having a handle end, a block fastened to the said bar opposite the handle end and having a serrated edge for engaging a jar cap, a substantially triangular shaped member arranged suspended from the same side of the bar as the said block and having a cam edge laterally offset from the bar, gripping teeth formed on said cam edge, a loop member bridging said bar and having its ends engaged in said member for slidably connecting it with the bar, and a finger rest formed on said member directly rearwardly of and at an angle to the toothed cam.
