IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID ATTACHMENTS FOR BEDSTEADS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,232, dated May 28, 1878 application filed May 2, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TUNIS 'T. KENDRIGK, of Washington ,city, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Rest Attachments for Bed-Bottoms, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in

bed by simply connecting it with the side rails or the slat-strips attached to the side rails of the bedstead, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawing, similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.

A represents an ordinary slat-bedstead, and B the slat-strips secured to the side rails of the same. The removable back-rest attachment is composed of a frame-work, having the side rails C provided with the hooks d at their lower ends, and connected by slats H to support the bedding when in operation. Cords 01 canvas may be stretched upon the frame-work for the same purpose.

Arms D, used, in connection with ratchetshoes. G, to support the frame-work at the proper inclination, are pivoted at E to the inner sides of the side rails C of the frame-work, so that they may be folded parallel with said side rails C, a notch, i, in the rails C receiving the rod F, which carries the ratchet-shoes G, when the folding takes place.

Screws 0, having eyes to receive the hooks d, are driven into the slat-strips B to connect the back-rest attachment to the bedstead. The

ratchet-shoes G rest upon the slat-strips B, and slide upon the same when the back-rest attachment is being elevated. The teeth of the ratchet-shoes G engage with the edges of the slat-strips B after the back-rest has been elevated to any desired inclination, and hold it in said position until the cord g has been drawn upon to disengage the teeth from the strips B, when the back-rest may be dropped until it rests upon a level with the strips B, which causes the bed to have the appearance of having an ordinary bed-bottom. The cord h is used to elevate the back-rest.

The slats of the bed-bottom directly beneath the attachment should be removed before applying the back-rest.

It will be seen that this back-rest may be readily attached to a corded'bed by supplying the strips for the ratchet-shoes to rest upon; and, in fact, it may be attached to any bedstead, thus obviating the expense of an invalid bed-bottom entire. It may be removed at any time and stored, or may be changed from one bed to another, or it may remain in place without inconvenience to the occupants of the bed.

Head-sections forbedshave been constructed and attached to bedsteads and bed-bottoms in such a manner that they could be attached to and removed therefrom by withdrawing the pins which formed the hinges or pivots on which they are turned for adjustment. I do not therefore claim, broadly, a removable headsection; but

What I do claim as new and useful, and dey I sire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

A removable back-rest attachment for bedbottoms composed of a frame-work, having the side rails C provided with hooks d and screws 0, and connected by slats H, provided with the pivoted arms D, carrying the rod F, having the ratchet-shoes G and the cord g, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
